Performance evaluation of lead vapor heat-pipe as a stimulated Raman converter for XeCl lasers

High power (6.6 W at 43 pps) stimulated Raman scattering at 459 nm was obtained by down shifting the radiation of a XeCl excimer laser in a lead vapor heat-pipe. Experiments were conducted with different buffer gas species. Photon conversion efficiency as high as 66 percent and energy slope efficiency of 53 percent obtained with Xe as the buffer gas at 1300°C. The apparatus was in daily use for a period of six months without maintenance.     

Assessment of curriculum by medical students: comparison of participants and non-participants in voluntary anamnesis groups. An empirical study

A representative sample of medical students (n = 121) was given a questionnaire to assess parts of their medical education (lectures, seminars, clerkships) and to design a subjectively ideal timetable, which was compared with the real faculty program. Overall traditional lectures received a low rating (n = 0.17) and individual studies with the textbooks a high rating (n = 0.53). The information given in programs in psychiatry and psychosomatics in significantly less motivating than information to be learned in other medical subjects. This is surprising because the ground work for training in the doctor-patient relationship should be in these fields. Students with former group experience (participation in peer groups on history taking (wish to have more practically oriented education compared with the students without group experience. It is not clear whether the important factor is participation in group experience before starting medical school. (64% of the participants had group experience in the first group as opposed to only 45% of the other group). This information should be taken into consideration when reforming medical school programs.     

Investigating the process of liquid-liquid extraction by means of computational fluid dynamics

Liquid-liquid two-phase flow in extraction columns of the rotating disc contactor type is analysed using the multi-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technique. Euler-Euler and Euler-Lagrange models are employed to give insight into the global flow structure and to analyse the turbulence related dispersion processes. Laser-Doppler velocity measurements are used to check the Euler-Euler results while a measured residence time distribution allows the assessment of the Euler-Lagrange approach. The results give rise to the expectation that CFD will become an accepted design tool in chemical engineering.     

Measurement of management efforts with respect to integration of quality,safety, and ergonomics issues in manufacturing industry

The main objective of this study was to identify critical factors that measure management efforts with regard to quality, safety, and ergonomics issues for their simultaneous improvement. Eleven identified management activity areas have been synthesized from the literature as the most important areas that meet all stakeholders' needs. Factors were then developed to measure the efficiency of these activities through a questionnaire. The overall response rate of the survey questionnaire was 47%. The reliability coefficients ranging from 0.73 to 0.85 indicated that some scales or management activity areas are more reliable in measuring potential for improvements in terms of quality, ergonomics, safety, and efficiency. The proposed instrument for quantifying management efforts with respect to simultaneous improvements in the areas of quality, ergonomics, and safety was found to be valid and reliable. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. RIAPC: a microcomputer program for the analysis of radioimmunoassay data

A microcomputer program for analysis of radioimmunoassays has been developed for use on microcomputers which operate under MS-DOS system software. The program messages are contained in an ASCII text file in French, English, and Spanish and can be modified by the user. The parameters and data can be entered manually into screen tables, or read from external files. An unweighted log/logit transformation is used for regression analysis of the standard curve. Provision is made for correction of the sample measurements for procedural losses (recovery). All results are written to an ASCII text file which can printed and/or reduced in order to pass the sample concentrations to other programs.
