Examined the graduate school origins of authors of Journal of Counseling Psychology (JCP) articles in Volumes 15–28 to extend a previous analysis of Volumes 1–24 by the 3rd author et al (1969). Comparisons of the 2 14-yr periods reveal that some universities retained the same or similar ranks across both periods, some declined in importance as sources of authors, and others emerged as major sources of JCP authors. This paper presents an overview of the image analysis techniques in the domain of histopathology, specifically, for the objective of automated carcinoma detection and classification. As in other biomedical imaging areas such as radiology, many computer assisted diagnosis (CAD) systems have been implemented to aid histopathologists and clinicians in cancer diagnosis and research, which have been attempted to significantly reduce the labor and subjectivity of traditional manual intervention with histology images. The task of automated histology image analysis is usually not simple due to the unique characteristics of histology imaging, including the variability in image preparation techniques, clinical interpretation protocols, and the complex structures and very large size of the images themselves. In this paper we discuss those characteristics, provide relevant background information about slide preparation and interpretation, and review the application of digital image processing techniques to the field of histology image analysis. In particular, emphasis is given to state-of-the-art image segmentation methods for feature extraction and disease classification. Four major carcinomas of cervix, prostate, breast, and lung are selected to illustrate the functions and capabilities of existing CAD systems.  相似文献

The structural integrity and damage tolerance of typical composite T-joints found in ships constructed from glass fibre reinforced plastic was the subject of this investigation. The effect of the geometry of the T-joint on the strain distribution was investigated using finite element (FE) analysis. The results, reported in this paper, showed that the critical strains were significantly affected by the joint geometry. Results of the FE analysis conducted to investigate the effect of disbonds between the filler and overlaminate are also reported. This showed that particular defects led to large changes in the strains in the T-joint structure, which would encourage disbond progression. The FE model was validated by mechanical tests on a representative T-joint, instrumented with surface strain gauges and displacement transducers, into which a range of defects was progressively introduced.  相似文献

The aim of this paper is to explore the transition from traditional measures to creativity and innovation measures within a number of small to medium‐sized enterprises (SMEs) case studies. The need for increased competitiveness has created an impetus for increased creativity and innovation in SMEs. However, the measures associated with the process of creativity and innovation in organisations sometimes do not follow cause‐and‐effect rationale, reflecting non‐linear behaviour. A multiple SME‐based case research methodology is used to explore the transitioning effects from traditional to more creativity and innovation based measures. The cases were part of a longitudinal creativity and innovation intervention programme, which combined taught modules and Critical Action Learning networks over a two‐year period. These networks involved sub‐groups applying critical theory‐based study to the learning they had received in the modules. The findings reveal that the transition dynamics include a complex mix of cause and effect rationale, phenomenology, incremental change, radical change, quantitative, qualitative and linear and complex contrasts and comparisons. Thus, managers must facilitate an eclectic approach to creativity and innovation measures.  相似文献

Eigendecomposition-based techniques are popular for a number of computer vision problems, e.g., object and pose estimation, because they are purely appearance based and they require few on-line computations. Unfortunately, they also typically require an unobstructed view of the object whose pose is being detected. The presence of occlusion and background clutter precludes the use of the normalizations that are typically applied and significantly alters the appearance of the object under detection. This work presents an algorithm that is based on applying eigendecomposition to a quadtree representation of the image dataset used to describe the appearance of an object. This allows decisions concerning the pose of an object to be based on only those portions of the image in which the algorithm has determined that the object is not occluded. The accuracy and computational efficiency of the proposed approach is evaluated on 16 different objects with up to 50% of the object being occluded and on images of ships in a dockyard.

From 1999--2002, he was a Machine Vision Systems Engineer with Semiconductor Technologies and Instruments, Inc., Plano, TX. He is currently the Vice President of Energid Technologies, Cambridge, MA, USA. His research interests include computer vision, computer graphics, and robotics. Anthony A. Maciejewski   received the BSEE, M.S., and Ph.D. degrees from Ohio State University in 1982, 1984, and 1987. From 1988 to 2001, he was a professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue University, West Lafayette. He is currently the Department Head of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Colorado State University. He is a Fellow of the IEEE. A complete vita is available at: Venkataramanan Balakrishnan   is Professor and Associate Head of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana. He received the B.Tech degree in electronics and communication and the President of India Gold Medal from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, in 1985. He then attended Stanford University, where he received the M.S. degree in statistics and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering in 1992. He joined Purdue University in 1994 after post-doctoral research at Stanford, CalTech and the University of Maryland. His primary research interests are in convex optimization and large-scale numerical algebra, applied to engineering problems. Rodney G. Roberts   received B.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering and Mathematics from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in 1987 and an MSEE and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University in 1988 and 1992, respectively. From 1992 until 1994, he was a National Research Council Fellow at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. Since 1994 he has been at the Florida A&M University---Florida State University College of Engineering where he is currently a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering. His research interests are in the areas of robotics and image processing. Kishor Saitwal   received the Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) degree in Instrumentation and Controls from Vishwakarma Institute of Technology, Pune, India, in 1998. He was ranked Third in the Pune University and was recipient of National Talent Search scholarship. He received the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the Electrical and Computer Engineering department, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, in 2001 and 2006, respectively. He is currently with Behavioral Recognition Systems, Inc. performing research in computer aided video surveillance systems. Models of cortical neuronal circuits commonly depend on inhibitory feedback to control gain, provide signal normalization, and selectively amplify signals using winner-take-all (WTA) dynamics. Such models generally assume that excitatory and inhibitory neurons are able to interact easily because their axons and dendrites are colocalized in the same small volume. However, quantitative neuroanatomical studies of the dimensions of axonal and dendritic trees of neurons in the neocortex show that this colocalization assumption is not valid. In this letter, we describe a simple modification to the WTA circuit design that permits the effects of distributed inhibitory neurons to be coupled through synchronization, and so allows a single WTA to be distributed widely in cortical space, well beyond the arborization of any single inhibitory neuron and even across different cortical areas. We prove by nonlinear contraction analysis and demonstrate by simulation that distributed WTA subsystems combined by such inhibitory synchrony are inherently stable. We show analytically that synchronization is substantially faster than winner selection. This circuit mechanism allows networks of independent WTAs to fully or partially compete with other.  相似文献

Ubiquitin-like proteins (Ubls) confer diverse functions on their target proteins. The modified proteins are involved in various biological processes, including DNA replication, signal transduction, cell cycle control, embryogenesis, cytoskeletal regulation, metabolism, stress response, homeostasis and mRNA processing. Modifiers such as SUMO, ATG12, ISG15, FAT10, URM1, and UFM have been shown to modify proteins thus conferring functions related to programmed cell death, autophagy and regulation of the immune system. Putative modifiers such as Domain With No Name (DWNN) have been identified in recent times but not fully characterized. In this review, we focus on cellular processes involving human Ubls and their targets. We review current progress in targeting these modifiers for drug design strategies.  相似文献
