A frequency selective surface (FSS) which exploits the dielectric anisotropy of liquid crystals to generate an electronically tunable bandpass filter response at D Band (110-170 GHz) is presented. The device consists of two printed arrays of slot elements which are separated by a 130-mum thick layer of liquid crystals. A 3% shift in the filter passband occurs when the substrate permittivity is increased by applying a control signal of 10 V. Measured results show that the insertion loss increases from -3.7 dB to -10.4 dB at resonance (134 GHz), thus demonstrating the potential to create a FSS which can be switched between a transmitting and a reflecting structure.  相似文献

A study of 83 firms in the North American electronics industry that have implemented environmentally “clean” process technology found that social networks have a significant positive impact on implementation success. This paper presents evidence that some types of social networks influence implementation success more than others. More specifically, interfirm networks composed of both suppliers and competitors were significantly correlated with the routinization and incorporation of alternative technical solutions to reducing ozone depleting chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). This only held in situations where the complexity of the implementation was relatively high. Intrafirm and local social networks were not significant. The utilization of a network of publicly accessible sources of information and expertise had a negative impact. OBJECTIVE: Since there is limited information concerning caffeine's metabolic effects on the human brain, the authors applied a rapid proton echo-planar spectroscopic imaging technique to dynamically measure regional brain metabolic responses to caffeine ingestion. They specifically measured changes in brain lactate due to the combined effects of caffeine's stimulation of glycolysis and reduction of cerebral blood flow. METHOD: Nine heavy caffeine users and nine caffeine-intolerant individuals, who had previously discontinued or substantially curtailed use of caffeinated products because of associated anxiety and discomforting physiological arousal, were studied at baseline and then during 1 hour following ingestion of caffeine citrate (10 mg/kg). To assess state-trait contributions and the effects of caffeine tolerance, five of the caffeine users were restudied after a 1- to 2-month caffeine holiday. RESULTS: The caffeine-intolerant individuals, but not the regular caffeine users, experienced substantial psychological and physiological distress in response to caffeine ingestion. Significant increases in global and regionally specific brain lactate were observed only among the caffeine-intolerant subjects. Reexposure of the regular caffeine users to caffeine after a caffeine holiday resulted in little or no adverse clinical reaction but significant rises in brain lactate which were of a magnitude similar to that observed for the caffeine-intolerant group. CONCLUSIONS: These results provide direct evidence for the loss of caffeine tolerance in the human brain subsequent to caffeine discontinuation and suggest mechanisms for the phenomenon of caffeine intolerance other than its metabolic effects on elevating brain lactate.  相似文献

Our study describes a newly designed stapedotomy prosthesis which consists of two components: (1) a platinum ribbon, and (2) a Teflon shaft. The first innovation is a flattened 'tab' on the posterior aspect of the platinum ribbon. The second innovation concerns the dual diameter cylinder-like shaft. Our prosthesis was implanted into 25 individuals, who underwent stapedotomy for stapes fixation, and the results are shown and discussed. Our innovations offer a proper and safe insertion of the prosthesis into the oval window associated with excellent manipulation and handling. At the same time, maximum visualization of the surgical field is achieved, while the stepped-down design of the shaft prevents the prosthesis protruding into the vestibule.  相似文献

The reasons for recent declines in AIDS incidence and mortality may include advances in treatment, but these may be confounded by earlier declines in the incidence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. To determine whether the declines in AIDS and mortality may, in part, stem from wider use of combination antiretroviral therapy, 622 HIV-positive men with well-characterized dates of seroconversion were followed. In this group, combination therapy came into widespread use in only 1996. In a Cox proportional hazards model, the 1996 calendar period was significantly associated with slower progression to AIDS (relative hazard [RH]=0. 19, 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.05-0.69, P=.01) and death (RH=0. 45, 95% CI, 0.21-0.95, P=.04). Declines in incidence of HIV infection, changes in HIV virulence, and end-point underreporting cannot fully explain the decline in AIDS and death in 1996. The introduction of combination antiretroviral therapy as the standard of care may already have had measurable effects.  相似文献

Listeria monocytogenes is a foodborne pathogen of significance because of its comparatively high heat resistance, zero tolerance in ready-to-eat foods, and growth at refrigeration temperatures. A 3 x 3 x 3 factorial study was done to determine the effects of milkfat (0%, 2.5%, 5.0%), pH (5.0, 6.0, 7.0), and processing temperature (55 degrees C, 60 degrees C, 65 degrees C) on the thermal resistance of L. monocytogenes in a formulated and homogenized milk system. Data were fit to a modified Gompertz equation where parameter estimates characterized three regions of a survival curve: the shoulder, maximum slope, and tail. Statistical analysis was done for each of the 27 individual treatment sets to visualize individual effects on parameter estimates and to evaluate how well the Gompertz equation represented the data. A regression model for the Gompertz equation was generated to predict the logarithmic surviving fraction of L. monocytogenes based on all 27 treatments and their single and interactive effects. The shoulder region of the survival curve was affected by pH; however, the maximum slope was affected by temperature, milkfat, and the interaction of temperature x milkfat. Validation of the model suggests that the predictions are best suited for processing above 62 degrees C. Trends over time for a 4-log reduction in cells (4D values) were evaluated using results from the 27 individual treatment sets, the regression model for the Gompertz equation, and a linear equation. At lower temperatures, 4D values by the three methods varied by twofold. At higher temperatures, all methods gave similar 4D values, suggesting that death became more linear. Based on this study all three factors affect heat resistance for specific regions of a survival curve, and a predictive model was developed that can be used as a preliminary estimate for L. monocytogenes inactivation.  相似文献
