Understanding the process of domestic retrofit is important for learning and innovation. This is particularly the case for low carbon retrofits such as those undertaken under the UK's Retrofit for the Future (RftF) programme, with its aim to achieve an overall 80% carbon reduction by 2050. Current post-occupancy evaluation (POE) research has both theoretical and methodological limitations with implications for technical and behavioural research in the built environment. Drawing on relevant ideas and concepts from social practice theory and science and technology studies, principally prefiguration (constraints/enablement), black-boxing, heating and cooling practices, this paper demonstrates how the relationship between buildings and people could be reconceptualized as mutually constitutive and co-evolving through a process of ‘interactive adaptation’. The concept of ‘interactive adaptation’ is explored through a novel approach to integrating physical and social data collected from a sample of dwellings selected from the RftF programme. Analysis yields insights into the influences and pathways of interactive adaptation resulting from retrofit technology and practices. The implications of these insights for policy-makers, the research community and practitioners are discussed: end-use energy demand policy needs to be informed by a socio-technical approach.  相似文献

The reaction of ethanol for the production of hydrogen has been studied over a series of metal supported CeO2 catalysts. The study is conducted by TPD, steady state reaction, XPS, TEM, and infrared spectroscopy. TPD gave evidence for the role of Rh in dissociating the carbon–carbon bond needed for efficient production of hydrogen molecules. IR of CO adsorption at 90 K revealed that Rh particles are most likely in very small clusters as evidenced by a single OC–Rh IR band at 2020 cm−1. TEM did not show conclusive evidence for the presence of the metal on-top of the CeO2 support, yet the Rh-Pd/CeO2 used catalyst has features that might be attributed to epitaxial growth of the noble metal along the (1 1 1) surface of the CeO2 support. Considerable reconstruction of the CeO2 support is seen for the used catalysts, in addition. Reforming of ethanol to hydrogen using (3 moles of water per mole of ethanol) was very efficient particularly above 650 K where hydrogen selectivity reaches 60 vol.%. At these temperatures hydrogen production from reforming of methane takes place.  相似文献

The mechanical properties and post-thermal aging properties of natural rubber (NR) and polybutadiene rubber (BR) blends at different blending ratios are investigated herein. The experimental results show that both tensile and tear strengths of NR/BR blends increase with increasing NR content. BR has a higher compression stiffness than NR. The deformation of BR is less than that of NR under the same load conditions. With regard to aging properties, both tensile stress and strain of NR/BR blends decrease after prolonged aging. In addition, the stress loss of BR is lower than that of NR, meaning that the aging resistance property of BR is superior to that of NR. Furthermore, accumulated thermal history has shifted the glass transition temperature (T g) of NR/BR blends toward lower temperatures while the loss tangent (tan δ) value increases with prolonged thermal aging.  相似文献

A novel noncovalent and inorganic method was used to disperse multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in aqueous solutions through alumina-coated silica (ACS) nanoparticle halos. MWCNTs were directly dispersed into a highly charged ACS nanoparticle aqueous solution without functionalization of their surfaces. The dispersed MWCNTs were characterized by transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. Raman spectroscopy of MWCNTs prepared from dispersion in the ACS solution revealed reduced bundling compared to the corresponding untreated MWCNTs. The characteristic Raman peak at about 1570 cm−1, corresponding to the G band, shifted to a higher wavenumber with a narrower peak. It was possible to disperse up to 20 mg/mL of MWCNTs in a 1 wt% ACS nanoparticle aqueous solution at pH 2. This homogeneous MWCNT-ACS aqueous solution was stable for weeks after ultrasonication.  相似文献

Blends of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and polypropylene (PP) at composition 80/20 with and without a compatibilizing agent were studied. Both materials are widely used in the soft drink bottle industry. The compatibilizing agent was a maleic anhydride grafted polyethylene-octene elastomer (POE-g-MA). The olefinic segment of POE is compatible with PP, whereas the maleic anhydride is affined with PET carbonyl groups. The effectiveness of the compatibilizing agent was evaluated using different techniques, such as Fourier transform IR spectroscopy, mechanical analysis, scanning electron microscopy, dynamic mechanical analysis, and rheological analysis. The results show that the addition of POE-g-MA promotes a fine dispersed-phase morphology, and improves process ability and toughness of these blends. Shifts in the glass-transition temperature of the PET phase and the increase in the melt viscosity of the compatibilized blends indicated enhanced interactions between the discrete PET and PP phases induced by the functional compatibilizer.  相似文献

The study mainly investigates the improvement of the comparative tracking index (CTI) on brominated epoxy resins in a copper clad laminate. We compare the effects of the differences in structures of various epoxy resins on the CTI. In addition, on the basis of the proportion of inorganic fillers and type, we use Pauling's electronegativity theory to find inorganic materials that affect CTI. Experimental results show that the laminate surface CTI increases as the brominated epoxy resin content decreases. When looked at structurally, epoxys modified by phenolic resin systems had lower CTI values than those modified by bisphenol A type epoxy resin systems. Analyzing the effects of inorganic filler types, we found that the ideal bromide epoxy resin proportion and the CTI value of Al(OH)3 could exceed 600 V. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The polyaniline (PANI)‐coated polystyrene (PS) latexes were synthesized, and the electrically conductive films were prepared thereafter. The weight ratio of PANI was 5%. Thermal analysis of the latices was performed using DSC and TGA. In this study, the electrically conductive films were prepared above the PS glass transition temperature (Tg). During the film formation, the effects of the annealing temperature and atmosphere (air or N2) on the film resistance were investigated. In addition, the film morphology was observed utilizing scanning electron microscopy. The film resistance decreased in the initial heating stage due to the increasing temperature and the compaction of film. Then the film resistance increased with further annealing due to the aging of PANI. In this research, the thermoresponsive composite latex particles were prepared via W/O miniemulsion polymerization. Fe3O4 nanoparticles were homogeneously dispersed inside the poly(NIPAAm‐co‐MAA) latex particles. In the first step, PAA oligomers were used as stabilizers to produce a stable water‐based Fe3O4 ferrofluid, which could mix well with the water‐soluble monomers. In the second step, the Fe3O4/poly(NIPAAm‐co‐MAA) composite latex particles were synthesized via W/O miniemulsion polymerization. This polymerization proceeded in cyclohexane at room temperature, with Span80 as the emulsifier, NIPAAm as the thermoresponsive monomer, MAA as a comonomer with ? COOH functional groups, and APS/SMBS as the redox initiator system. The distribution of Fe3O4 nanoparticles inside the composite latex particles was expected to be homogeneous. The nucleation and morphology of the composite latex particles were mainly controlled by the concentration of the surfactant, Span80, in cyclohexane. The properties of the composite latex were examined with several instruments such as DSC and TGA. Finally, the superparamagnetic and thermoresponsive characteristics of this functional composite latex were also investigated. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This work was undertaken to discuss in depth the vital differences in the morphological development during synthesis, and properties of starch‐g‐poly‐(vinyl acetate) copolymers using two different initiators, potassium persulfate (KPS) and ceric ammonium nitrate (CAN). KPS‐initiated system gave relatively low values of grafting ratio and grafting efficiency, indicating a great tendency for the formation of poly(vinyl acetate) homopolymer (PVAc). Yet, higher values were seen for the CAN‐initiated system. Transmission electron microscope observations indicated a relatively broad distribution of latex particles for the KPS‐initiated system. The surface potential of latex particles was about ?3.5 mV, which turned out to be insufficient to maintain stability of latex particles. On the other hand, a uniform particle size distribution was found for the CAN‐initiated system, as the surface potential of latex particles was 21.5 mV. Moreover, radicals on starch molecules were generated directly through a redox reaction with positively charged ceric ion. The hydrophobic PVAc chains were thus grafted on starch, resulting in an amphiphilic graft copolymer, which provides a sufficient stabilization degree as a role of surfactant to render a relatively uniform distribution of latex particles. The synthesized starch‐g‐poly(vinyl acetate) copolymers were further converted to starch‐g‐poly(vinyl alcohol) through saponification, which were subjected to evaluations regarding the biodegradation and cell culture capability. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work, a generalized mathematical model was developed to estimate the variation of particle concentration during the entire course of soapless emulsion polymerization of methylmethacrylate (MMA). All of the factors, such as oligomeric radical absorption or desorption by polymer particles, coagulation between polymer particles, and the termination effect on the formation mechanism of polymer particles, were considered and included in this model. When appropriate parameters were selected, this model could be successfully used to interpret the experimental behavior of particle concentration during the entire reaction. Under different conditions, the rate of polymerization, the number of radicals in each particle, the instantaneous average molecular weight of polymers, and the rate constant of termination were also calculated.
