Conjugated Polymers of Intrinsic Microporosity (C‐PIMs)

Conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) have shown great potential for energy and environmental issues, however, poor solubility and processability of most of these materials limit their applications. Herein, a range of linear conjugated polymers of intrinsic microporosity (C‐PIMs) is reported, combining for the first time the properties of conjugated microporous polymers, such as tunable electronic properties and compositional variation, with those of linear polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIMs) allowing for solution processability and film formation. These soluble materials have a number of potential applications, for example as components in devices where large, porous interfaces are combined with extended electronic conjugation.     

M-ary PSK burst mode transmission in multipath channels

A novel and efficient burst mode transmission method is presented. M-ary PSK bursts were transmitted through an underwater acoustic channel exhibiting long time spread multipath behaviour, and a DPSK detector was used at the receiver. The phase constellation plots obtained show that up to eight phases can be resolved without evidence of errors in the received data     

Monolithic GaAs photoreceiver for high-speed signal processing applications

High-speed planar monolithically integrated GaAs photoreceivers have been fabricated by selective ion implantation into SI GaAs substrates. Their fabrication is fully compatible with existing GaAs LSI process schedules. A receiver upper cutoff frequency of 1.5 GHz and sensitivity of 112 V/W have been measured. The application of these devices in short-haul high-bit-rate data communication systems has been demonstrated in a 560 Mbit prototype optical data link, using packaged and fibre-coupled devices.     

Effects of variety and particle size upon utilization of fescue hay by lactating dairy cows and dairy heifers

Missouri-96 and Kentucky-31 hays were chopped with a tub grinder containing screens with apertures of 31, 63, or 100 mm in diameter and fed to dairy cows or heifers. Particle sizes (geometric mean diameter) were 1218, 1486, and 1933 micron, respectively, for the 31, 63, and 100-mm treatments. In Trial 1, the six treatments were fed ad libitum to 24 lactating cows; concentrate was offered at 1 kg/2 kg of milk. Dry matter intake and NDF digestibility were greater for Kentucky-31, but there were no other effects of variety. Particle size did not affect DM intake, DM or fiber digestibility, nitrogen partition, milk yield, or milk fat percentage. Crude protein digestibility was greatest for the 63-mm particle size treatment. In trial 2, the six treatments were fed ad libitum to 24 dairy heifers. Intake was greater for the 31 than for the 100-mm treatment but was unaffected by variety. Variety and particle size did not affect DM digestibility, nitrogen utilization, or daily gain. In this study fescue hay chopped through screens having apertures ranging from 31 to 100 mm was without effect on milk yield or composition. Reducing particle size increased intake and nitrogen utilization but not DM or fiber digestibility.     

Picosecond pulse analysis of gain-switched 1.55 µm InGaAsP laser

Results of computer simulation of gain-switched pulses from InGaAsP lasers emitting at 1.55 μm are reported. Multimode rate equations are solved for short triangular current pulses of large amplitude superimposed on a dc bias close to threshold. Lasers of conventional length (200μm) and with short cavity (50 μm) are analyzed. The effect of wavelength chirp on time-resolved and the time-averaged multimode spectra is demonstrated. Optical pulses as short as 10 ps are predicted for short-cavity lasers with reflective coatings. While the number of longitudinal modes in gain-switched spectrum is efficiently reduced for short-cavity lasers, the dynamic linewidth of each mode remains of a similar magnitude (up to 140 GHz) as for standard-cavity lasers. It is expected that gain saturation effects could reduce the calculated values of dynamic linewidth.     

Investigation of soybean oil as a diesel fuel extender: Endurance tests

Engine performance and crankcase lubricant viscosity were followed with 1∶2 and 1∶1 fuel mixtures of degummed soybean oil in No. 2 diesel fuel in tests with a John Deere 6-cylinder, 404 cubic in. displacement, direct-injection, turbocharged engine for a total of 600 running hours. A crankcase oil contamination problem resulting in an unacceptable thickening and a potential for gelling did exist with a 50/50 blend or a greater concentration of soybean oil, but it did not occur with the 1∶2 blend. The data accumulated during the initial 600 hr running time indicates that a fuel blend of one-third degummed soybean oil and two-thirds No. 2 diesel (1∶2 blend) may be a suitable fuel for agricultural equipment during periods of diesel fuel shortages or allocations. Additional data are being accumulated and will be analyzed in the future.     

Calciphylaxis in man. A syndrome of tissue necrosis and vascular calcification in 11 patients with chronic renal failure

Eleven patients with chronic renal failure and presumed secondary hyperparathyroidism developed a syndrome of medial calcinosis of the arteries and painful ischemic ulcers of the fingers, legs, or thighs, or any combination of the three. Five patients required maintenance hemodialysis; six had functioning renal homografts. Severe hyperphosphatemia had existed in each; seven showed roentgenographic evidence of subperiosteal resorption. Similarities are evident between the lesions and experimentally produced calciphylaxix. The lesions demonstrated a relentless, progressive course, with serious morbidity and mortality. Hyperplastic or adenomatours parathyroid tissue was removed from ten of 11 patients unergoing surgical procedures; healing followed in seven patients. Treatment with phosphate-binding antacids to lower serum phosphorus levels may prevent this syndrome. Total or subtotal parathyroidectomy should be considered when ischemic skin lesions appear in uremic patients or in renal transplant recipients.     

A comparative study of several methods for recording spontaneous motor activity in mice under drug effects

Various existing methods of recording motor activity in animals are briefly reviewed. An electronic adaptation of an old one, the Jiggle cage, is described. The relative advantages and demerits in recording behaviour of mice under drug effects are compared with those of the traditional Jiggle cage, an electromagnetic activity counter and observational ratings.     

The mixed kidney cell-lymphocyte reaction in rats

Optimal conditions for obtaining the proliverative response in mixed kidney cell-lymphocyte culture (MKLC) have been determined in rats. The addition of 2-mercaptoethanol to the culture medium was essential for successful stimulation of lymphocytes by allogeneic kidney cells. Proliferative responses by standard MLC and MKLC were compared in rats with the same or a different Ag-B locus. In most strain combinations, there was a significant correlation between MLC and MKLC reactions, However, the DA-ACI combination, compatible at the Ag-B locus, consistently showed negative MLC and positive MKLC reactions. This suggested the possibility that this technique allowed the expression of kidney specific antigens.
