This work systematically investigates the thermodynamic stability of SiaOb(M)cCd structures derived from polymeric precursors incorporating metal fillers: Ta, Nb, and Hf, at 1200 and 1500°C. Structural characterization of the polymer derived ceramics (PDCs) employs X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Enthalpies of formation relative to crystalline components (metal oxide, silica, silicon carbide, and graphite) are obtained from thermodynamic measurements by high temperature oxide melt solution calorimetry. The enthalpies of formation (∆H°f, comp) of Ta-1200, Hf-1200, Nb-1200, Ta-1500, Hf-1500, and Nb-1500 specimens are −137.82 ± 9.72, −256.31 ± 8.97, −82.80 ± 9.82, −182.80 ± 7.85, −292.54 ± 9.38, −224.98 ± 9.60 kJ/mol, respectively. Overall incorporation of Hf results in most thermodynamically stable structures at all synthesis temperatures. SiaOb(M)cCd specimens employing Nb fillers undergo the most stable structural evolution in this temperature range. The results indicate strong thermodynamic drive for carbothermal reduction of metal oxide domains. Incorporation of Ta provides the greatest stabilization of SiO3C mixed bonding environments. Ultimately, the choice of metal filler influences composition, structural evolution, and thermodynamic stability in PDCs. 相似文献

This paper presents the Connectionist Inductive Learning and Logic Programming System (C-IL2P). C-IL2P is a new massively parallel computational model based on a feedforward Artificial Neural Network that integrates inductive learning from examples and background knowledge, with deductive learning from Logic Programming. Starting with the background knowledge represented by a propositional logic program, a translation algorithm is applied generating a neural network that can be trained with examples. The results obtained with this refined network can be explained by extracting a revised logic program from it. Moreover, the neural network computes the stable model of the logic program inserted in it as background knowledge, or learned with the examples, thus functioning as a parallel system for Logic Programming. We have successfully applied C-IL2P to two real-world problems of computational biology, specifically DNA sequence analyses. Comparisons with the results obtained by some of the main neural, symbolic, and hybrid inductive learning systems, using the same domain knowledge, show the effectiveness of C-IL2P. 相似文献

We fertilized individual, pole-size ponderosa pine trees at two low-quality sites and pine saplings at a relatively high-quality site, with ammonium nitrate. Six to 12 months later, we measured total %N and 2,6-disubstituted piperidine alkaloids in the foliage. The N additions raised foliar %N above deficiency levels (i.e., from 1.0–1.1% to 1.4–1.6%) at the low-quality sites, but did not elevate foliar %N in saplings at the higher quality site, where it was already (1.9%) well above critical levels. In control trees with foliar N below a threshold of 1.1%, we detected no more than trace levels of alkaloids, indicating that alkaloid production is highly constrained by N deficiency. The N additions increased mean concentrations of the predominant alkaloid, pinidine, at all three sites. Mean total alkaloid concentrations for fertilized trees at the two low-quality sites were 12 and 155 g/g dry wt higher than controls (relative increases of 12× and 4.5×, respectively). For saplings at the high-quality site, the mean total increased by 584 g/g dry wt (1.6×) with the N additions. Allocation of foliar N to alkaloids was highest in fertilized saplings (0.81%) compared to control saplings (0.53%). These findings demonstrate that foliar alkaloid concentrations can be increased by nitrogen fertilization of forest trees growing on both low- and high-quality sites. Fertilizing for the purpose of inhibiting potential herbivores may be more successful at higher quality sites where alkaloid levels are enhanced relative to food quality (foliar %N). 相似文献

The clinical observation that a laparoscopic cholecystectomy is a minimally invasive operation has not been demonstrated on a biochemical basis. Interleukin-6, a known endogenous pyrogen and hepatocyte-stimulating protein, correlates with the significance of surgical trauma. Utilizing the IL-6 immunoassay, we studied this biochemical parameter of trauma to compare its response in laparoscopic vs open cholecystectomy. Sixteen patients who underwent only laparoscopic cholecystectomy showed peak IL-6 concentrations of 51 pg/ml (22-86) vs a peak IL-6 concentration of 124 pg/ml (56-225) for open cholecystectomy. Six additional patients who underwent an ERCP followed by laparoscopic cholecystectomy showed a dramatic rise in peak IL-6 concentration to 315 pg/ml (15-634). These results biochemically confirm the true minimal invasiveness of laparoscopic cholecystectomy. The findings in the ERCP-followed-by-laparoscopic-cholecystectomy group support the theory that two invasive procedures in close proximity may prime the cytokine system in its response to surgical trauma. 相似文献

A probabilistic identification matrix for campylobacteria, comprising 76 phenotypic characters and 37 taxa, is described. The accuracy and integrity of the matrix was evaluated using established computer-assisted methods. Certain taxa (for example, Campylobacter concisus and Camp. gracilis) demonstrated significant phenotypic diversity; previous data corroborated these findings. Differentiation between a few pairs of taxa proved difficult, although discriminatory characteristics were noted in each of these cases. The results indicate that most campylobacteria can be identified accurately and objectively with phenotypic tests when probabilistic methods of data assessment are employed. 相似文献

A healthy, young adolescent girl developed primary pneumococcal peritonitis, an infection rarely reported in this age group in North America. Her course was further complicated by exudative pleural effusion and pneumonia despite receiving 10 days of clindamycin therapy.
