A comparison of clear-air brightness temperatures is performed between radiometric measurements and atmospheric radiative transfer calculations. The measurements were made using the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center's Millimeter-wave Imaging Radiometer (MIR) in a series of airborne and ground-based atmospheric experiments at six millimeter-wave frequencies: 89; 150; 183.3±1, ±3, ±7; and 220 GHz. With the inclusion of the 220 GHz channel, these measurements are the first passive observations of the atmosphere made simultaneously at the six frequencies. The MIR was operated concurrently with supporting meteorological instruments (radiosonde and Raman lidar) to construct a paired set of both spatially and temporally coincident calibrated brightness temperatures and atmospheric profile parameters. Calculated brightness temperatures based on the measured atmospheric profile parameters were obtained using a numerical radiative transfer model. Incremental water-vapor weighting functions were used to study the impact of radiosonde hygrometer errors on the radiative transfer calculations. The aircraft-based brightness temperature comparisons are generally within 3 K for the channels sensitive to the lower atmospheric levels (89, 150, 183.3±7, and 220 GHz), but show discrepancies of up to 11 K for the opaque channels (183.3±1 and ±3 GHz) caused primarily by radiosonde bias. The ground-based calculations are similarly found to be sensitive to hygrometer errors in the lower atmosphere. Dissolution rates of nickel in hydrochloric acid with and without the presence of thiourea have been studied by means of rotating disc methods with solution analysis. In the absence of thiourea an apparent activation energy value of 61.1 ± 12.1 kJ. mol−1 was determined. Such a high value is inconsistent with a diffusion controlled process and this was supported by the lack of dependency of the dissolution rate on rotational speed. A reaction controlled process is indicated. In 8.4 mol. dm−3 hydrochloric acid the thiourea concentration range producing optimum dissolution rates was 10−3 to 10−2 mol. dm−3. At 70° C the rate of leaching was enhanced by some 105 %. Tests using radiochemical labelling of the sulphur and of the carbon separately in the thiourea molecule confirmed previous proposals, for cobalt dissolution, that hydrogen sulphide is produced as a by-product of the cathodic depolarisation reaction involving the thiourea and is adsorbed on the metal surface in the molecular state, forming activated anodic sites which enhance anodic dissolution. At the 10−1 mol. dm−3 thiourea concentration level stimulation of the nickel dissolution process gave way to its partial inhibition with a maximum diminution at 30°C of 50 %.  相似文献

The authors present an overview of an `inspection and control' package to perform automatic quality control of industrial components, specifically electronic circuit boards. This application has grown out of a set of tools designed initially to aid the development of point distribution models (PDMs) and grey-level models (GLMs) pioneered at the Wolfson Image Analysis Unit in Manchester. These models are both generic and specific. Generic, because they can be applied to most image classification problems; specific, because they aim at the full interpretation of the variability of the objects to be modelled. The underlying vision processing techniques are based on statistical pattern matching. Two synergetic approaches have been followed. The Australia SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP) is a new telescope under development as a world-class high-dynamic-range wide-field-of-view survey instrument. It will utilize focal plane phased array feeds on the 36 12-m antennas that will compose the array. The large amounts of data present a huge computing challenge, and ASKAP will store data products in an archive after near real-time pipeline processing. This powerful instrument will be deployed at a new radio-quiet observatory, the Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory in the midwest region of Western Australia, to enable sensitive surveys of the entire sky to address some of the big questions in contemporary physics. As a pathfinder for the SKA, ASKAP will demonstrate field of view enhancement and computing/processing technology as well as the operation of a large-scale radio array in a remote and radio-quiet region of Australia.  相似文献

We report undoped ZnO films deposited at low temperature (200°C) using plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD). ZnO thin-film transistors (TFTs) fabricated using ZnO and Al2O3 deposited in situ by PECVD with moderate gate leakage show a field-effect mobility of 10 cm2/V s, threshold voltage of 7.5 V, subthreshold slope <1 V/dec, and current on/off ratios >104. Inverter circuits fabricated using these ZnO TFTs show peak gain magnitude (dV out/dV in) ~5. These devices appear to be strongly limited by interface states and reducing the gate leakage results in TFTs with lower mobility. For example, ZnO TFTs fabricated with low-leakage Al2O3 have mobility near 0.05 cm2/V s, and five-stage ring-oscillator integrated circuits fabricated using these TFTs have a 1.2 kHz oscillation frequency at 60 V, likely limited by interface states.  相似文献

By using a specific normalization, it is shown that the TM/sub 0/ radiation field from a leaky mode that is excited by a source on any printed-circuit structure can be represented in a unified manner. The general properties of the normalized leaky-mode radiation field are examined in detail for a variety of phase and attenuation constants, as well as distances from the source, and for different types of source excitations. The normalized leaky-mode radiation field is compared to similarly normalized geometrical-optics and far-field radiation expressions to provide further insight into the nature of the radiation fields in the near- and far-field regions. The results provide a general view of leaky-mode radiation properties independent of the type of planar transmission line or background structure.  相似文献

Passive microwave Earth observing systems provide coarse resolution data. Heterogeneity in physical characteristics will typically be present within footprints, especially over land. How this affects the development and validation of methods of retrieving soil moisture has not been verified. In this study, aircraft-based 1.4 GHz microwave radiometer data were collected sit several altitudes over test sites where soil moisture was measured concurrently. The use of multiple flightlines at lower altitudes allowed the direct comparison of different spatial resolutions using independent samples over the same ground location. Results showed that the brightness temperature data from 1.4 GHz sensor in this study region provides the same mean values for an area regardless of the spatial resolution of the original data. The relationship between brightness temperature and soil moisture was similar at different resolutions. These results suggest that soil moisture retrieval methods developed using high resolution data can be extrapolated to satellite scales  相似文献

We present the results of an experimental investigation of the transfer characteristics of a fiber ring resonator for various values of the resonator finesse. In particular, we measure the spectral dependence of the intensity transmission and the induced phase shift in the undercoupled, critically coupled, and overcoupled regimes. We also demonstrate tunable optical (true time) group delay via a fiber ring resonator and show that a high finesse is unnecessary. Our laboratory results are in excellent agreement with theoretical predictions.  相似文献

Knowledge of surficial snow properties such as grain size, surface roughness, and free-water content provides clues to the metamorphic state of snow on the ground, which in turn yields information on weathering processes and climatic activity. Remote sensing techniques using combined concurrent measurements of near-infrared passive reflectance and millimeter-wave radar backscatter show promise in estimating the above snow parameters. Near-infrared reflectance is strongly dependent on snow grain size and free-water content, while millimeter-wave backscatter is primarily dependent on free-water content and, to some extent, on the surface roughness. A neural-network based inversion algorithm has been developed that optimally combines near-infrared and millimeter-wave measurements for accurate estimation of the relevant snow properties. The algorithm uses reflectances at wavelengths of 1160 nm, 1260 nm and 1360 nm, as well as co-polarized and cross-polarized backscatter at a frequency of 95 GHz. The inversion algorithm has been tested using simulated data, and is seen to perform well under noise-free conditions. Under noise-added conditions, a signal-to-noise ratio of 32 dB or greater ensures acceptable errors in snow parameter estimation.  相似文献

Organic thin-film transistors using the fused-ring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon pentacene as the active electronic material have shown mobility as large as 0.7 cm2/V-s and on/off current ratio larger than 108; both values are comparable to hydrogenated amorphous silicon devices. On the other hand, these and most other organic TFT's have an undesirably large subthreshold slope. We show here that the large subthreshold slope typically observed is not an intrinsic property of the organic semiconducting material and that devices with subthreshold slope similar to amorphous silicon devices are possible  相似文献
