An Autonomous Palm-Sized Gliding Micro Air Vehicle

This article has concentrated on the development of a set of core technologies key to the realization of an autonomous 2-g glider. One aspect which was not discussed in detail was the ease of construction and low cost of an individual MicroGlider. Integration is simplified through a number of rapid prototyping techniques and the low costs of most components allow rigorous testing to be done without worry of substantial damage.     

Reduction of neuropeptide Y binding sites in the rat hippocampus after electroconvulsive stimulations

The role of vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) was investigated when mucosal stroking and 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) were used to activate neural reflexes that stimulate chloride secretion in the guinea pig colon. Muscle-stripped segments of colon containing intact submucosal ganglia without myenteric ganglia were set up in modified flux chambers in order to record short-circuit current (Isc). Mucosal stroking with a brush for 1 s or a pulse of 5-HT (injection of 15 microliters of 100 microM 5-HT into 1.5 ml of mucosal solution) caused an increase in Isc that was reduced by the VIP antagonist, neurotensin6-11-VIP7-28, in a concentration-dependent manner. The Isc responses to mucosal stroking and a 5-HT pulse were reduced by 53% and 58%, respectively, by 2 microM neurotensin6-11-VIP7-28. The residual Isc response in the presence of neurotensin6-11-VIP7-28 was abolished by atropine. Blockade of 5-HT1P receptors on submucosal afferent neurons decreased Isc responses to stroking or a 5-HT pulse. The residual Isc response after 5-HT1P receptors were blocked was reduced by only 11-14% by neurotensin6-11-VIP7-28. In the presence of blockade of both 5-HT1P and VIP receptors, atropine abolished the Isc response to both stimuli. The observations suggest that the neural circuitry activated by stroking includes at least two independent pathways. One pathway contains VIP neurons which receive inputs directly or indirectly from 5-HT1P receptor-containing afferents. A second pathway involves muscarinic cholinergic transmission that is independent of 5-HT1P and VIP receptor activation.     

Bone mineralisation, body fat and anthropometric measurement in mothers delivering preterm

Twenty mothers of preterm babies who had survived to 1 year old, were matched for age and parity of the mother and time of birth of the baby, with 20 mothers delivering fullterm. Bone mineral, body composition and anthropometric measurements were obtained for each mother and analysed using paired t-tests. The only significant difference (P < 0.01) between the groups was a lower fat-free mass in the preterm mothers calculated from skinfold thickness measurements.     

A fast analog mean-timer

A circuit is described that determines the average of the transit time of light from an event in a scintillation counter to the two ends of that counter. The design offers superior time resolution and a novel gating scheme that significantly reduces circuit dead-time.     

An empirical investigation of socio-cultural factors of information sharing in China

Understanding information sharing is an important challenge to modern organizations, and is likely to be increasingly considered when IT investment decisions are made world-wide. Our research study investigated the influence of cultural factors on information sharing in China. It was postulated that social network structures such as guanxi, Confucian dynamism, and collectivism could explain the degree to which information sharing took place between people in China. It was found that guanxi, Confucian dynamism, and collectivism all had a significant influence on information sharing.     

Growth and function of human parathyroid tissue transplanted to athymic mice

The morphology, cell proliferation and function of transplanted normal, hyperplastic and adenomatous human parathyroid tissue was studied after transplantation to athymic mice. The iPTH was evaluated in relation to morphology. Human parathyroid tissue collected during surgery for hyperparathyroidism was implanted subcutaneously into athymic mice (nu/nu-BALB/cA) and was analysed 1, 4, 7 and 12 weeks after transplantation. The transplants were examined by light and electron microscopy and by autoradiography after continuous infusion of 3H-thymidine. The relative amount of viable tissue was evaluated using a computer image analysing programme. Graft function was evaluated by measuring human iPTH in mouse serum. A transplant take ratio of 93% was observed. The proliferation rate in adenoma grafts at 12 weeks after transplantation was five and fifteen times that observed in normal and hyperplastic transplants, respectively. In normal and adenoma groups, a continuous increase in iPTH concentrations was observed, but in the hyperplastic group the iPTH remained on the same level. The secretion of iPTH in relation to the amount of transplanted tissue and the fraction of viable tissue was at the same level at 12 weeks in normal and adenomatous grafted animals. In conclusion, human parathyroid tissue was successfully transplanted and maintained its original structure. The growth potential, but not the iPTH secretion, was significantly higher in adenoma grafts compared to grafts from hyperplastic and normal glands.     

AK-5 tumor-induced expression of interleukin-12: role of IL-12 in NK-mediated AK-5 regression

Spontaneous regression of AK-5, a histiocytic tumor, is mediated by CD3-, CD8+ NK cells through ADCC. The onset of AK-5 regression is associated with the induction of humoral immune response and the augmentation of effector function. The mechanism of tumor cell death involves both necrosis and apoptosis. Interleukin-12, a 75-kDa heterodimeric cytokine, has multiple effects on T and NK cells. We have investigated the role of IL-12 in the NK cell-mediated AK-5 tumor regression process. Subcutaneous transplantation of AK-5 tumor induced the expression of IL-12 (p35 and p40) message by Day 6-8 in the splenocytes of syngenic rats. Similarly, analysis of serum samples from tumor-bearing animals showed the presence of circulating IL-12 around the same time. Interaction of immune cells with antibody-tagged AK-5 cells in vitro also triggered the expression of IL-12 message and protein by 3 hr. The circulating IL-12 in the sera of tumor-rejecting animals, as well as rIL-12, stimulated NK cell proliferation, expression of CD16 and CD25, and the activation of NK cells function. These observations suggest that the ability of the AK-5 tumor to induce the endogenous production of IL-12 may be responsible for keeping the NK cells constantly in an activated state, thus demonstrating an efficient mechanism for the complete regression of the tumor.     

Native valve infective endocarditis in elderly and younger adult patients: comparison of clinical features and outcomes with use of the Duke criteria and the Duke Endocarditis Database

The effect of age on the presentation and outcome of infective endocarditis (IE) is unclear. Many of the available data are based on analyses of mixed populations of patients including intravenous drug users or those with prosthetic valve endocarditis or native valve IE. We used the Duke criteria to compare the characteristics of 44 episodes of definite native valve IE in elderly patients (> 64 years old) with the characteristics of 64 similarly defined episodes of native valve IE in younger, nonintravenous-drug-using adult patients (> 29 years and < 60 years old). Our data suggest that the clinical presentation, characteristics, and outcome of native valve IE are similar for elderly patients and younger adult patients, although elderly patients were hospitalized an average of 12 days longer. Although we found that the occurrence of renal failure and cerebral embolism during an episode of IE was associated with higher rates of death (odds ratios, 4.8 and 4.0, respectively), age was not a significant contributor to mortality.
