The mineralogy of clay-rich mineral matter isolated from a range of Australian bituminous coals has been evaluated in quantitative terms from X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) patterns using a Rietveld-based data processing technique. The chemical composition of coal ash derived from this mineral matter has been calculated and compared to the directly determined composition of the ash prepared from the same coal samples. Although there are some minor differences due in part to uncertainty regarding the actual composition of several minerals, the compositions indicated by the two methods show a relatively high correlation, suggesting that the Rietveld technique provides mineralogical analyses that are consistent with independently determined chemical data. Comparison of the normalised clay mineral percentages from the Rietveld analysis to quantitative interpretations based on a peak intensities in glycolated and heat-treated oriented aggregates of the respective clay fractions also shows a high correlation, confirming mutual consistency of the two different mineralogical analysis methods. Such quantitative mineralogical data are significant to a range of coal exploration, mining and utilization activities, including seam correlation, material handling and ash and slag formation in combustion processes.  相似文献

The cleavage of di-p-tolyl sulfone with concentrated sulfuric acid has been shown to occur at elevated temperatures (>120°C). The products were confirmed as the corresponding sulfonic acids by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis of the sulfonate ester derivatives. The cleavage reactions of a series of di-p-substituted diaryl sulfones with sulfuric acid have been studied. A method using a double end-point titration has been used to quantify the amounts of sulfonic acid formed as the reactions proceed. These data have been used to construct second-order rate plots over a range of temperatures and to determine rate constants for the cleavage reactions. The second-order rate plots showed good linearity. Activation energies were determined from Arrhenius plots of the second-order rate constants over a range of temperatures. The presence of electron-donating groups decreases the activation energy of the reaction, whereas the presence of electron-with-drawing groups increases the activation energy of the reaction.  相似文献

A low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) material system has been used to develop a protype field emission cathode structure for use in an experimental magnetron oscillator. The structure is designed for used with 30 gated field emission array (GFEA) die electrically connected through silver metal traces and electrical vias. To approximate a cylinder, the cathode structure (48 mm long and 13.7 mm in diameter) is comprised of 10 faceted plates which cover the GFEA dies. Slits in the facet plates allow electron injection. The GFEA die (3 mm × 8 mm) are placed in axial columns of 3 and spaced azimuthally around a cylindrical support structure in a staggered configuration resulting in 10 azimuthal locations. LTCC manufacturing techniques were developed in order to fabricate the newly designed cathode with seven layers wrapped to form the cylinder with electrical traces and vias. Two different cathode wrapping techniques and two different via filling techniques were studied and compared. Two different facet plate manufacturing techniques were studied. Finally, four different support stand configurations for firing the cylindrical structure were also compared with a square post stand having the best circularity and linearity measurements of the fired structure.  相似文献

A maternal high fat diet (HFD) can have adverse effects on skeletal muscle development. Skeletal muscle PLIN proteins (PLIN2, 3 and 5) are thought to play critical roles in lipid metabolism, however effects of HFD on PLIN and lipases (HSL, ATGL, CGI‐58) in mothers as well as their offspring have yet to be investigated. The primary objective of this study was to determine whether maternal HFD would influence skeletal muscle lipase and PLIN protein content in offspring at weaning (19d) and young adulthood (3mo). Female rats (28d old, n = 9/group) were fed control (CON, AIN93G, 7 % soybean oil) or HFD (AIN93G, 20 % lard) for 10 weeks prior to mating and throughout pregnancy and lactation. All offspring were weaned to CON [n = 18/group, 1 female and 1 male pup per litter were studied at weaning (19d) and 3mo of age]. There was no effect of sex for the main outcomes measured in plantaris, therefore male and female data was combined. Maternal HFD resulted in higher triacylglycerol content in pups at 3mo (p < 0.05), as well as in the dams (p = 0.015). Maternal HFD resulted in higher PLIN5 content in pups at weaning and 3mo (p = 0.05). PLIN2 and PLIN5 content decreased at 3mo versus weaning (p < 0.001). HFD dams had a higher PLIN3 content (p = 0.016). Diet had no effect on ATGL, CGI‐58, or HSL content. In conclusion, exposure to a maternal HFD resulted in higher skeletal muscle lipid and PLIN5 content in plantaris of offspring through to young adulthood.  相似文献

Ecologists have long been interested in how the nutritional composition of leaves changes as they age, and whether this affects herbivore feeding preferences. As a consequence, the literature abounds with reports that younger leaves contain higher concentrations of nitrogen and plant secondary metabolites (PSMs) than do older leaves. Most of these studies, however, base their conclusions on average values that often mean little to herbivores. We examined this issue in the well-studied marsupial-eucalypt system, using Eucalyptus melliodora and captive common brushtail possums (Trichosurus vulpecula) offered branches from individual trees containing both young and mature leaves. Like many plants, the concentrations of N and PSMs differed among individual E. melliodora. Although young leaves were, on average, “better defended” by the PSM sideroxylonal than were mature leaves, some trees produced leaves that were relatively undefended at both ages. In response, possums chose different proportions of young and mature leaves depending on the chemistry of the individual tree. Possums did not always prefer leaves with lower concentrations of sideroxylonal (mature leaves) or those with higher concentrations of available N (young leaves). Instead, the sideroxylonal concentration of young leaves dictated their choice: possums preferred young leaves with low sideroxylonal concentrations, but not with high concentrations. By skewing their feeding toward trees producing young leaves with low concentrations of PSMs, possums may influence plant fitness. Researchers will detect these potentially important interactions only if they are aware that measuring variation among plants discloses more information than do average relationships.  相似文献

The phase behaviors of crystalline solids embedded within nanoporous matrices have been studied for decades. Classic nucleation theory conjectures that phase stability is determined by the balance between an unfavorable surface free energy and a stabilizing volume free energy. The size constraint imposed by nanometer-scale pores during crystallization results in large ratios of surface area to volume, which are reflected in crystal properties. For example, melting points and enthalpies of fusion of nanoscale crystals can differ drastically from their bulk scale counterparts. Moreover, confinement within nanoscale pores can dramatically influence crystallization pathways and crystal polymorphism, particularly when the pore dimensions are comparable to the critical size of an emerging nucleus. At this tipping point, the surface and volume free energies are in delicate balance and polymorph stability rankings may differ from bulk. Recent investigations have demonstrated that confined crystallization can be used to screen for and control polymorphism. In the food, pharmaceutical, explosive, and dye technological sectors, this understanding and control over polymorphism is critical both for function and for regulatory compliance. This Account reviews recent studies of the polymorphic and thermotropic properties of crystalline materials embedded in the nanometer-scale pores of porous glass powders and porous block-polymer-derived plastic monoliths. The embedded nanocrystals exhibit an array of phase behaviors, including the selective formation of metastable amorphous and crystalline phases, thermodynamic stabilization of normally metastable phases, size-dependent polymorphism, formation of new polymorphs, and shifts of thermotropic relationships between polymorphs. Size confinement also permits the measurement of thermotropic properties that cannot be measured in bulk materials using conventional methods. Well-aligned cylindrical pores of the polymer monoliths also allow determination and manipulation of nanocrystal orientation. In these systems, the constraints imposed by the pore walls result in a competition between crystal nuclei that favors those with the fastest growth direction aligned with the pore axis. Collectively, the examples described in this Account provide substantial insight into crystallization at a size scale that is difficult to realize by other means. Moreover, the behaviors resulting from nanoscopic confinement are remarkably consistent for a wide range of compounds, suggesting a reliable approach to studying the phase behaviors of compounds at the nanoscale. Newly emerging classes of porous materials promise expanded explorations of crystal growth under confinement and new routes to controlling crystallization outcomes.  相似文献

A multi-layer ceramic composite melt pour tube for superheating and pouring of molten Ti-6Al-4V (wt.%) was tested using an existing Ti atomization system. Free fall gas atomization was conducted with the pour tube while liquid metal temperatures were measured in situ using a two-color optical pyrometer. Post-process pour tube erosion was compared with pre-process matching surfaces, and minimal change in interior liner thickness was found. Microstructural analysis, phase identification, and composition determination of the resulting gas-atomized powder indicated minimal contamination from the composite pour tube despite very high liquid superheat, approaching 300° C. Hot isostatic pressing of the powder resulted in mechanical properties exceeding the MIL-T-9047 standard for Ti-6Al-4V.  相似文献

Cadmium(II) complexes of some potentially heptadentate tripodal Schiff base ligands with the general formula N{(CH2)nNCHC5H4N}2{(CH2)mNCHC5H4N}) (where n = m = 2, L222; n = 2, m = 3, L322; n = 3, m = 2, L332) have been studied. These ligands are products of the full condensation of a number of tripodal tetraamines with 2-pyridinecarboxaldehyde. An unusual reaction of an additional 2-pyridine-carboxaldehyde with a methylene group adjacent to the imine bond only during template preparation of [Cd(L332)]2+ was observed. The latter reaction is a novel chelate-assisted C?C bond formation because it is occurred only where a rigid five-membered chelate ring is present.  相似文献

Settling of the potato aphid,Macrosiphum euphorbiae, on feeding membranes was deterred by methanolic leaf rinses ofLycopersicon pennellii, or of its F1 with tomato,L. esculentum. The active compounds in theL. pennellii rinsates were identified as 2,3,4-tri-O-acylglucoses bearing short to medium chain length fatty acids. These compounds are localized in the glandular exudate of the type IV trichomes and may accumulate to levels in excess of 400 g/cm2. In choice assays, purified glucose esters fromL. pennellii reduced aphid settling at concentrations as low as 25 g/cm2; at concentrations of 150 g/cm2 or more, all aphids avoided treated areas. Glucose esters were also active in deterring aphid settling in no-choice assays. At 100 g/ cm2, these esters resulted in increased levels of mortality after 48 hr.  相似文献

A methodology is proposed to relate the diffusion coefficient of small penetrant molecules in polymers to temperature, strain, and penetrant concentration. The approach used is based on well-known free volume theories. It is assumed that the transport kinetics is governed by the constant redistribution of the free volume, caused by the segmental motions of the polymeric chains. An expression for the diffusion coefficient is inferred from the temperature, strain, and penetrant concentration dependence of the free volume. The stress dependence of solubility is predicted from the Hildebrand theory. It is shown that the resulting constitutive equations exhibit many features desirable for joint durability studies. Finally, a non-Fickian driving force arising from differential swelling is included in the governing equations.  相似文献
