The novel complexes [Pd(L-L')(SR)Cl] where L-L' is Ph(2)PCH(2)CH(2)PPh(2) (dppe) or Ph(2)AsCH(2)CH(2)PPh(2) (dadpe) and RSH is glutathione, L-cysteine, or N-acetyl-L-cysteine, have been prepared and characterised. Their structures in the solid-state and in solution are discussed. The introduction of cysteine or glutathione as a ligand in these complexes greatly improved their aqueous solubility compared with the hydrophobic parent dichloro complexes. The cytotoxicities of the glutathione complexes towards the cell-lines L1210, ADJ/PC6 and CH1 were investigated. Their cytotoxicities towards L1210 cells were comparable to those of the parent dichloro complexes.  相似文献

Poly(furfuryl alcohol) (PFA) is an attractive target for the development of bio‐based novolac resins. However, control of the polycondensation reaction is not well understood and side reactions are an important factor for PFA and the development of new resins. The polymerization reactions and kinetics of furfuryl alcohol and 2‐furyl ethanol into polymeric resins are detailed in this work. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy analysis of reaction kinetics, molecular weight analysis, and rheology analysis confirm that the polymerization reaction rate of 2‐furyl ethanol is much faster than that of furfuryl alcohol because the addition of this methyl group serves to stabilize the carbocation transition state. Side reactions, such as Diels–Alder crosslinking and in particular branching, are quantified and were found to be much more prevalent in the polymerization of PFA. The glass transition temperature was measured to be 376 K for PFA and only 294 K for poly(2‐furyl ethanol). Molecular dynamics simulations showed that the alternative structure that forms in PFA that causes branching results in greater backbone rigidity causing its higher glass transition temperature. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The microbial catabolism of chitin, an abundant and ubiquitous environmental organic polymer, is a fundamental cog in terrestrial and aquatic carbon and nitrogen cycles. Despite the importance of this critical bio-geochemical function, there is a limited understanding of the synergy between the various hydrolytic and accessory enzymes involved in chitin catabolism. To address this deficit, we synthesized activity-based probes (ABPs) designed to target active chitinolytic enzymes by modifying the chitin subunits N-acetyl glucosamine and chitotriose. The ABPs were used to determine the active complement of chitinolytic enzymes produced over time by the soil bacterium Cellvibrio japonicus treated with various C substrates. We demonstrate the utility of these ABPs in determining the synergy between various enzymes involved in chitin catabolism. The strategy can be used to gain molecular-level insights that can be used to better understand microbial roles in soil bio-geochemical cycling in the face of a changing climate.  相似文献

Fibrils formed by human serum transferrin [(1–3 μM ) apo‐Tf, partially iron‐saturated (Fe0.6‐Tf) and holo‐Tf (Fe2‐Tf) forms], from dilute bicarbonate solutions, were deposited on formvar surfaces and studied by electron microscopy. We observed that possible bacterial contamination appears to give rise to long, pea‐pod‐like (PPL) structures for Fe2‐Tf, attributable to the formation of polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) storage granules, under the nutrient‐limiting conditions used. These PPL structures contained periodic nanomineralisation sites susceptible to uranyl stain. Extended incubation of transferrin solutions (about four days) gave rise to extensive transferrin fibril structures. Optical microscopy and AFM studies showed that red blood cells (RBCs) readily adhere to these fibrils. Moreover, the fibrils appear to penetrate RBC membranes and to induce rapid cell destruction (within about 5 h). It is speculated that in situations in vivo where transferrin fibrils can form, such interactions might have adverse physiological consequences, and further studies could aid the understanding of related pathological events.  相似文献

Maximum-likelihood (ML) estimation is a popular approach to solving many signal processing problems. Many of these problems cannot be solved analytically and so numerical techniques such as the method of scoring are applied. However, in many scenarios, it is desirable to modify the ML problem with the inclusion of additional side information. Often this side information is in the form of parametric constraints, which the ML estimate (MLE) must now satisfy. We unify the asymptotic constrained ML (CML) theory with the constrained Cramer-Rao bound (CCRB) theory by showing the CML estimate (CMLE) is asymptotically efficient with respect to the CCRB. We also generalize the classical method of scoring using the CCRB to include the constraints, satisfying the constraints after each iterate. Convergence properties and examples verify the usefulness of the constrained scoring approach. As a particular example, an alternative and more general CMLE is developed for the complex parameter linear model with linear constraints. A novel proof of the efficiency of this estimator is provided using the CCRB.  相似文献

Remote sensing is the most practical method available to managers of fire-prone forests for quantifying and mapping fire impacts. Differenced Normalised Burn Ratio (ΔNBR) is among the most widely used spectral indices for the mapping of burn severity but is difficult to interpret in terms of fire-related changes in key biophysical attributes and processes. We propose to quantify burn severity as a change in the leaf area index (ΔLAI) of a stand. LAI is a key biophysical attribute of forests, and is central to understanding their water and carbon cycles. Previous studies have suggested that changes in canopy LAI may be a major contributor to ΔNBR and to the composite burn index (CBI) that is frequently used in combination with the NBR to assess burn severity on the ground. We applied remotely-sensed ΔLAI to map burn severity in jarrah (Eucalyptus marginata) forest in south-western Australia burnt during the January 2005 Perth Hills wildfires. Ground-based digital photography was used to measure LAI in typical stands representing the full range of canopy densities present in the study area as well as variation in the time since the last fire. Regression models for the prediction of LAI were developed using NBR, the Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) or the Simple Ratio (SR) as the independent variable. All three LAI models had equally high coefficients of determination (R2: 0.87) and small root mean squared errors (RMSE: 0.27–0.28). ΔLAI was calculated as the difference between pre- and post-fire LAI, predicted using imagery from January 2004 and February 2005, respectively. The area affected by the January 2005 fire and the burn severity patterns within that area were mapped using ΔLAI and ΔNBR. Landscape patterns of burn severity obtained from differencing pre- and post-fire LAI were similar to those mapped by ΔNBR. We conclude that fire-affected areas and burn severity patterns in the northern jarrah forest can be objectively mapped using remotely-sensed changes in LAI, while offering the important advantage over NBR of being readily interpretable in the wider context of ecological forest management.  相似文献

Reception of asynchronous, multicarrier direct-sequence-code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) in time-varying, multipath radio channels with use of a receiving antenna array is investigated. Interference reducing minimum mean squared error (MMSE) receivers are discussed, and by considering the time-variation of the channel, a modified structure is derived which is efficient for channels experiencing small-scale fading. A blind implementation of this receiver is then proposed. Subspace concepts are applied to formulate a tracking, composite channel vector estimator which operates effectively in fading situations, even when high levels of interference are present. Both the modified MMSE weight matrix and diversity combining weights are generated from these channel estimates. Simulations of the proposed receiver show it to have superior performance over a standard MMSE receiver which is periodically re-evaluated to permit it to follow the channel variations due to small-scale fading. Furthermore, a hybrid MMSE receiver is proposed which applies different processing methods depending on each transmitters mobility, resulting in improved performance.  相似文献

The mechanism of copper in limiting intrauterine infections in intrauterine device (Cu IUD) users is poorly understood. Copper ions may enhance the release of reactive oxygen radicals, which in turn decrease the release of reactive nitrogen intermediates (RNI). RNI are known to have bactericidal effect. The present study compares the levels of RNI prior to Cu-T insertion and at different post-insertion intervals up to 12 weeks. The decrease in RNI was evident by one week and continued until 12 weeks. Therefore, the bactericidal effect of copper in IUD is via reactive oxygen intermediates. The superoxide anion inactivates this active intermediate nitric oxide. Therefore, excess of superoxide radical will markedly shorten the half-life of nitric oxide but will not prevent its conversion to nitrites and nitrates.  相似文献
