Changes in attitude question form, wording, and context have repeatedly been shown to produce change in responses. It is often assumed that such response effects are less pronounced among individuals whose attitudes are intense, personally important, or held with great certainty. We report the results of 27 experiments conducted in national surveys designed to evaluate this hypothesis. Measures of attitude intensity, importance, and certainty were found not to differentiate individuals who show response effects from those who do not. Numerous examples in the literature illustrate how the coextrusion of film with three or more polymeric layers is economically used to achieve a desirable mix of end-use characteristics. More recently, layer-multiplying devices permit two polymers of widely dissimilar solid-state properties to be combined into unique microlayer and nanolayer structures with hundreds or thousands of alternating layers. If the layers are thin enough, the key properties of the constituents can combine synergistically. The microlayer structure is also an effective research tool. Because the microlayer and nanolayer structures contain large specific interfacial areas, they are ideal for fundamental studies of phenomena such as interdiffusion and adhesion. Three examples of microlayered materials with up to 1024 layers illustrate the versatility of this coextrusion process: talc-filled PP, PC/SAN, and HDPE/LLDPE. 相似文献

Eye movement artifacts occurring during 3-D optical coherence tomography (OCT) scanning is a well-recognized problem that may adversely affect image analysis and interpretation. A particle filtering algorithm is presented in this paper to correct motion in a 3-D dataset by considering eye movement as a target tracking problem in a dynamic system. The proposed particle filtering algorithm is an independent 3-D alignment approach, which does not rely on any reference image. 3-D OCT data is considered as a dynamic system, while the location of each A-scan is represented by the state space. A particle set is used to approximate the probability density of the state in the dynamic system. The state of the system is updated frame by frame to detect A-scan movement. The proposed method was applied on both simulated data for objective evaluation and experimental data for subjective evaluation. The sensitivity and specificity of the x-movement detection were 98.85% and 99.43%, respectively, in the simulated data. For the experimental data (74 3-D OCT images), all the images were improved after z-alignment, while 81.1% images were improved after x-alignment. The proposed algorithm is an efficient way to align 3-D OCT volume data and correct the eye movement without using references. 相似文献

A new selection criterion to explain the activation of the twinning variant is proposed. This criterion is based on the calculation of the deformation energy to create a primary twin. The calculation takes into account the effect of the grain size using a Hall–Petch type relation. This criterion allows to obtain a very good prediction for the twin family selection and twin variant selection. PURPOSE: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a new technology that uses near-infrared light in an interferometer to produce approximately 10-microns resolution cross-sectional images of the tissue of interest. The authors performed repeated quantitative assessment of nerve fiber layer thickness in individuals with normal and glaucomatous eyes, and they evaluated the reproducibility of these measurements. METHODS: The authors studied 21 eyes of 21 subjects by OCT. Each subject underwent five repetitions of a series of scans on five separate occasions within a 1-month period. Each series consisted of three circular scans around the optic nerve head (diameters, 2.9, 3.4, and 4.5 mm). Each series was performed separately using internal (fixation with same eye being studied) and external (fixation with contralateral eye) fixation techniques. The eye studied and the sequence of testing were assigned randomly. RESULTS: Internal fixation (IF), in general, provides a slightly higher degree of reproducibility than external fixation (EF). Reproducibility was better in a given eye on a given visit than from visit to visit. Reproducibility as measured by intraclass correlation coefficients were as follows: circle diameter (CD), 2.9 mm, 0.51/0.57 (normal/glaucoma) (IF), 0.43/0.54 (EF); CD, 3.4 mm, 0.56/0.52 (IF), 0.43/0.61 (EF); CD, 4.5 mm, 0.53/0.43 (IF), 0.42/0.49 (EF). CONCLUSIONS: Nerve fiber layer thickness can be reproducibly measured using OCT. Internal is superior to external fixation; each circle diameter tested provides adequate reproducibility. 相似文献

The heat resistance of six strains of Salmonella (including Enteritidis, Heidelberg, and Typhimurium) in liquid whole egg and shell eggs was determined. Decimal reduction times (D-values) of each of the six strains were determined in liquid whole egg heated at 56.7 degrees C within glass capillary tubes immersed in a water bath. D-values ranged from 3.05 to 4.09 min, and significant differences were observed between the strains tested (alpha = 0.05). In addition, approximately 7 log10 CFU/g of a six-strain cocktail was inoculated into the geometric center of raw shell eggs and the eggs heated at 57.2 degrees C using convection currents of humidity-controlled air. D-values of the pooled salmonellae ranged from 5.49 to 6.12 min within the center of intact shell eggs. A heating period of 70 min or more resulted in no surviving salmonellae being detected (i.e., an 8.7-log reduction per egg). 相似文献

Moisture in polymerization of a cationically cured silicone epoxy monomer blend is an important parameter that affects the resulting polymer properties. We report the kinetics of the cationic polymerization of epoxy monomers as a function of water concentration, directly quantified using Karl Fischer (KF) titration that was characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and also the mechanical strength of resulting polymers via diametral tensile strength measurements. Methodology and results for a silicone epoxy monomer material were compared with the same methodology applied to a “control” monomer, 3,4‐epoxycyclohexylmethyl 3,4‐epoxycyclohexyane carboxylate, for which moisture effects have been previously studied. Initially, an increase in moisture during cationic polymerization of epoxy caused increased rate (ROC) and degree of conversion (DOC) that for the silicone epoxy was followed by decreased DOCs for water contents approaching saturation, i.e., [H2O]∼0.19 wt %. Further, the rate of conversion was also affected by the presence of moisture with a trend analogous to the DOC. Diametral tensile strength measurements found that small amounts of water present during polymerization caused small changes in tensile strength but found polymer strengths to be significantly decreased if initial water concentrations approached saturation or were in excess of saturation. A composite approach to dielectric design has the potential to provide improved permittivity as well as high breakdown strength and thus afford greater electrical energy storage density. Interfacial coupling is an effective approach to improve the polymer-particle composite dielectric film resistance to charge flow and dielectric breakdown. A bi-functional interfacial coupling agent added to the inorganic oxide particles’ surface assists dispersion into the thermosetting epoxy polymer matrix and upon composite cure reacts covalently with the polymer matrix. The composite then retains the glass transition temperature of pure polymer, provides a reduced Maxwell-Wagner relaxation of the polymer-particle composite, and attains a reduced sensitivity to dielectric breakdown compared to particle epoxy composites that lack interfacial coupling between the composite filler and polymer matrix. Besides an improved permittivity, the breakdown strength and thus energy density of a covalent interface nanoparticle barium titanate in epoxy composite dielectric film, at a 5 vol.% particle concentration, was significantly improved compared to a pure polymer dielectric film. The interfacially bonded, dielectric composite film had a permittivity ∼6.3 and at a 30 μm thickness achieved a calculated energy density of 4.6 J/cm3. 相似文献

Two women with advanced human immunodeficiency virus infection are described who were seen with painful aphthous vaginal ulceration and CD4+ lymphocyte counts < 50 cells/mm3. A chronic rectovaginal fistula developed in one patient. In spite of extensive investigation no underlying cause of the ulceration was discovered. Clinical therapeutic response suggests that corticosteroid therapy may be of value in healing or stabilizing the destructive process. Clinicians should be aware of this complication in human immunodeficiency virus-infected women with severe vaginal pain and unexplained discharge. 相似文献
