In May 2013, sediment samples were collected from five stations in the Straits of Johor, near the southern tip of Peninsular Malaysia, in order to evaluate the distribution and sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The concentrations of 16 United States Environmental Protection Agency PAHs varied from 650.5 to 1441.2 ng g ?1 dry weight (dw) with a mean value of 985.5 ng g ?1 dw. PAHs can be classified as moderate level pollution in the collected samples. When comparing PAHs in this study with that of the sediment quality guidelines (SQGs), it was found that the total PAHs, low molecular weight (LMW), and high molecular weight (HMW) PAHs might incur minimal adverse biological effects. The diagnostic ratios of individual PAHs indicated both petrogenic and pyrogenic origins with predominantly pyrogenic sources, the findings of which are further supported by the results from principal component analysis (PCA). The PCA results reveal contributions of 44.44%, 32.3%, and 18.96% for traffic-related, coal combustion, and petroleum-related products, respectively. These findings indicate that the effective monitoring and significant improvement resulting from the implementation of environmental regulations in Malaysia might have caused a shift in the source of petroleum hydrocarbons in the Straits of Johor's aquatic ecosystems from petrogenic to pyrogenic origins. 相似文献

Speaker recognition performance in emotional talking environments is not as high as it is in neutral talking environments. This work focuses on proposing, implementing, and evaluating a new approach to enhance the performance in emotional talking environments. The new proposed approach is based on identifying the unknown speaker using both his/her gender and emotion cues. Both Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) and Suprasegmental Hidden Markov Models (SPHMMs) have been used as classifiers in this work. This approach has been tested on our collected emotional speech database which is composed of six emotions. The results of this work show that speaker identification performance based on using both gender and emotion cues is higher than that based on using gender cues only, emotion cues only, and neither gender nor emotion cues by 7.22 %, 4.45 %, and 19.56 %, respectively. This work also shows that the optimum speaker identification performance takes place when the classifiers are completely biased towards suprasegmental models and no impact of acoustic models in the emotional talking environments. The achieved average speaker identification performance based on the new proposed approach falls within 2.35 % of that obtained in subjective evaluation by human judges. 相似文献

Cloud computing allows execution and deployment of different types of applications such as interactive databases or web-based services which require distinctive types of resources. These applications lease cloud resources for a considerably long period and usually occupy various resources to maintain a high quality of service (QoS) factor. On the other hand, general big data batch processing workloads are less QoS-sensitive and require massively parallel cloud resources for short period. Despite the elasticity feature of cloud computing, fine-scale characteristics of cloud-based applications may cause temporal low resource utilization in the cloud computing systems, while process-intensive highly utilized workload suffers from performance issues. Therefore, ability of utilization efficient scheduling of heterogeneous workload is one challenging issue for cloud owners. In this paper, addressing the heterogeneity issue impact on low utilization of cloud computing system, conjunct resource allocation scheme of cloud applications and processing jobs is presented to enhance the cloud utilization. The main idea behind this paper is to apply processing jobs and cloud applications jointly in a preemptive way. However, utilization efficient resource allocation requires exact modeling of workloads. So, first, a novel methodology to model the processing jobs and other cloud applications is proposed. Such jobs are modeled as a collection of parallel and sequential tasks in a Markovian process. This enables us to analyze and calculate the efficient resources required to serve the tasks. The next step makes use of the proposed model to develop a preemptive scheduling algorithm for the processing jobs in order to improve resource utilization and its associated costs in the cloud computing system. Accordingly, a preemption-based resource allocation architecture is proposed to effectively and efficiently utilize the idle reserved resources for the processing jobs in the cloud paradigms. Then, performance metrics such as service time for the processing jobs are investigated. The accuracy of the proposed analytical model and scheduling analysis is verified through simulations and experimental results. The simulation and experimental results also shed light on the achievable QoS level for the preemptively allocated processing jobs. 相似文献

In this paper, two Zigler-Natta catalysts (ZNCs) were used to synthesize a commercially available linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE), widely used in the packaging industry, on an industrial scale. The catalysts differ only in their ability to distribute comonomers between short and long chains. Both catalysts were fully characterized in the first section, and two similar ethylene/1-butene copolymers were made using them. Afterward, the produced copolymers were fully characterized using different techniques; namely, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), successive self-nucleation and annealing (SSA), oxygen induction time (OIT), melt flow index (MFI), rheometric mechanical spectroscopy (RMS), and a wide range of mechanical experiments. It was revealed that while the presence of comonomers in short chains can reduce their resistance against oxidation (by more than 30%) and can cause a dramatic change in friction coefficients (by more than 20%), some of the other main mechanical properties of the made copolymers were independent of comonomer distribution between long and short chains. In addition, it was shown that ethylenic copolymers' strain hardening modulus (SHM) takes advantage of the homogenous distribution. 相似文献

Studies of the mechanical and optical properties of undrawn polypropylene fibres by annealing and drawing were performed. The optical properties and strain produced in polypropylene fibres at different conditions were measured interferometrically at room temperature. It was found that as the draw ratio of the fibre increased, its birefringence, Δna, increased at a constant rate, and then nearly levelled off. The refractive index, n ∥, and polarizability, p ∥, increased with different draw ratios; but for fibres annealed at 70 and 100°C, there were no acceptable variations. For fibres annealed at 130°C, n ∥ and p ∥ increased compared to those fibres annealed at 70 and 100°C. An empirical formula has been suggested to explain the relationship between the cross-sectional area of polypropylene fibres with the draw ratio, and the constants of this formula have been determined. The effect of annealing on the refractive index profile of undrawn polypropylene fibres, before and after thermal treatment, was studied. The strain optical coefficient and the Poisson's ratio were calculated over different draw ratios. The results obtained clarify the effect of annealing time and temperature with different draw ratios on the optical behaviour of polypropylene fibres. Aframework for understanding source monitoring and relevant empirical evidence is described, and several related phenomena are discussed: old–new recognition, indirect tests, eyewitness testimony, misattributed familiarity, cryptomnesia, and incorporation of fiction into fact. Disruptions in source monitoring (e.g., from confabulation, amnesia, and aging) and the brain regions that are involved are also considered, and source monitoring within a general memory architecture is discussed. It is argued that source monitoring is based on qualities of experience resulting from combinations of perceptual and reflective processes, usually requires relatively differentiated phenomenal experience, and involves attributions varying in deliberateness. These judgments evaluate information according to flexible criteria and are subject to error and disruption. BACKGROUND: Brown rice is unpolished rice with immeasurable benefits for human health. Brown rice (BR) and pre‐germinated brown rice (PGBR) are known to contain various functional compounds such as γ‐oryzanol, dietary fibre and γ‐aminobutyric acid (GABA). In the present study, the experimental diets containing BR and PGBR (24, 48 h pre‐germination) were used to investigate the influence of pre‐germination time of brown rice on blood cholesterol in Sprague–Dawley male rats. RESULTS: Hypercholesterolaemia and elevation of LDL‐cholesterol were successfully ameliorated by the experimental diets containing BR and PGBR (24 and 48 h pre‐germination). As compared to the control sample, the pre‐germination time had a significant (P < 0.05) effect on blood cholesterol of Sprague–Dawley male rats. It was also found that the significantly (P < 0.05) better effect on lipid profile of hypercholesterolaemic rats was observed by prolonging the pre‐germination time. As compared to non‐germinated brown rice, the germinated brown rice showed the higher cardio‐protective effect on hypercholesterolaemic Sprague–Dawley male rats. CONCLUSION: The present study suggests that the changes of blood cholesterol can be mainly modulated by using the PGBR rather than BR. The prolonging of pre‐germination time led to an increase in the bioactive components, thereby providing a more efficient functional diet affecting the high blood cholesterol. Drying conditions can greatly affect the physical and mechanical properties of grains. The drying process must be controlled to reduce or minimize drying damage. In this paper the thin layer drying behavior of wheat (Tajan) in a convective dryer is experimentally investigated. The mathematical modeling by using thin layer kinetics drying models available in literature was performed. Drying experiments were conducted at inlet drying air temperatures of 35, 45, 50, 60 and 70°C and at a fixed drying air velocity of 0.3 m/s and initial moisture content of 0.26–0.27 (d.b.). The effects of drying air temperature on the model's parameters were predicted by a linear regression analysis. The constants and coefficients of this model were be explained in terms of drying air temperature. A correlation coefficient (r) of 0.99 was found for the multiple regression model of moisture content during the drying process using different temperature values. Values of the diffusion coefficients for the whole kernel ranged from 2.28 × 10?11 to 1.14 × 10?10 m2/s. 相似文献
