With the analytical expression for the magnetophoretic mobility of an ideal, linearly polarizable sphere undergoing creeping motion in viscous medium, we have shown that both attractive and repulsive motions are possible in the magnetic field. We have validated theoretical predictions using magnetic monodisperse microspheres of 5.2-microm diameter and nonmagnetic polystyrene microspheres of 6.99-microm diameter suspended in solutions of paramagnetic ions. The microsphere magnetophoretic mobility was measured using a modified particle tracking velocimetry system, developed in-house and called a cell tracking velocimeter. The product of measured mobility and viscosity agrees well with the theoretical prediction, differing only by approximately 11%. Further, a 26% increase in resolution between magnetic and nonmagnetic particle distributions was evaluated when paramagnetic ion carrier was used instead of water. Continuous particle sorting based on differences in magnetophoretic mobility was performed with another device developed by us, the quadrupole magnetic flow sorter (QMS). In the QMS, the introduction of paramagnetic ions into the carrier was effective in suppressing nonspecific crossover (i.e., the transport of low-mobility particles into the magnetic particle fraction) in particles and in biologically relevant red blood cells and thus showed promise as a means of increasing the purity of the magnetic separation.  相似文献

Leafy greens are occasionally involved in outbreaks of enteric pathogens. In order to control the plant contamination it is necessary to understand the factors that influence enteric pathogen-plant interactions. Attachment of Salmonella enterica serovar typhimurium to lettuce leaves has been demonstrated before; however, only limited information is available regarding the localization and distribution of immigrant Salmonella on the leaf surface. To extend our knowledge regarding initial pathogen-leaf interactions, the distribution of green-fluorescent protein-labeled Salmonella typhimurium on artificially contaminated romaine lettuce leaves was analyzed. We demonstrate that attachment of Salmonella to different leaf regions is highly variable; yet a higher attachment level was observed on leaf regions localized close to the petiole (7.7 log CFU g−1) compared to surfaces at the far-end region of the leaf blade (6.2 log CFU g−1). Attachment to surfaces located at a central leaf region demonstrated intermediate attachment level (7.0 log CFU g−1). Salmonella displayed higher affinity toward the abaxial side compared to the adaxial side of the same leaf region. Rarely, Salmonella cells were also visualized underneath stomata within the parenchymal tissue, supporting the notion that this pathogen can also internalize romaine lettuce leaves. Comparison of attachment to leaves of different ages showed that Salmonella displayed higher affinity to older compared to younger leaves (1.5 log). Scanning electron microscopy revealed a more complex topography on the surface of older leaves, as well as on the abaxial side of the examined leaf tissue supporting the notion that a higher attachment level might be correlated with a more composite leaf landscape. Our findings indicate that initial attachment of Salmonella to romaine lettuce leaf depends on multiple plant factors pertaining to the specific localization on the leaf tissue and to the developmental stage of the leaf.  相似文献

Vesicle-clay complexes in which positively charged vesicles composed of didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB) were adsorbed on montmorillonite removed efficiently anionic (sulfentrazone, imazaquin) and neutral (alachlor, atrazine) pollutants from water. These complexes (0.5% w:w) removed 92-100% of sulfentrazone, imazaquin and alachlor and 60% of atrazine from a solution containing 10mg/L of it. A synergistic effect on the adsorption of atrazine was observed when all pollutants were present simultaneously (30 mg/L each), its percentage of removal being 85.5. Column filters (18 cm) filled with a mixture of quartz sand and vesicle-clay (100:1, w:w) were tested. For the passage of 1L (25 pore volumes) of a solution including all the pollutants at 10mg/L each, removal was complete for sulfentrazone and imazaquin, 94% for alachlor and 53.1% for atrazine, whereas removal was significantly less efficient when using activated carbon. A similar advantage of the vesicle-clay filter was observed for the capacities of removal.  相似文献

Summary Three self-stabilizing protocols for distributed systems in the shared memory model are presented. The first protocol is a mutual-exclusion prootocol for tree structured systems. The second protocol is a spanning tree protocol for systems with any connected communication graph. The thrid protocol is obtianed by use offair protoco combination, a simple technique which enables the combination of two self-stabilizing dynamic protocols. The result protocol is a self-stabilizing, mutualexclusion protocol for dynamic systems with a general (connected) communication graph. The presented protocols improve upon previous protocols in two ways: First, it is assumed that the only atomic operations are either read or write to the shared memory. Second, our protocols work for any connected network and even for dynamic network, in which the topology of the network may change during the excution. Shlomi Dolev received his B.Sc. in Civil Engineering and B.A. in Computer Science in 1984 and 1985, and his M.Sc. and Ph.D. in computer Sciene in 1989 and 1992 from the Technion Israel Institute of Technology. He is currently a post-dotoral fellow in the Department of Computer Science at Texas A & M Univeristy. His current research interests include the theoretical aspects of distributed computing and communcation networks. Amos Israeli received his B.Sc. in Mathematics and Physics from Hebrew University in 1976, and his M.Sc. and D.Sc. in Computer Science from the Weizmann Institute in 1980 and the Technion in 1985, respectively. Currently he is a sensior lecturer at the Electrical Engineering Department at the Technion. Prior tot his he was a postdoctoral fellow at the Aiken Computation Laboratory at harvard. His research interests are in Parellel and Distributed Computing and in Robotics. In particular he has worked on the design and analysis of Wait-Free and Self-Stabilizing distributed protocols. Shlomo Moran received his B.Sc. and D.Sc. degrees in matheamtics from Technion, Israel Institute of Technology, Haifa, in 1975 and 1979, respectively. From 1979 to 1981 he was assistant professors and a visiting research specialist at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. From 1981 to 1985 he was a senior lecturer at the Department of Computer Science. Technion, and from 1985 to 1986 he visted at IBM Thoas J. Watson Research Center, Yorktown Heights. From 1986 to 1993 he was an associated professor at the Department of Computer Science, Technin. in 1992–3 he visited at AT & T Bell Labs at Murray Hill and at Centrum voor Wiskunde en Informatica, Amsterdam. From 1993 he is a full professor at the Department of Computer Science, Technion. His researchinterests include distributed algorithm, computational complexity, combinatorics and grapth theory.Part of this research was supported in part by Technion V.P.R. Commonly used learning curve models assume that a repetitive task is performed continuously, disregarding the existence of possible break periods between consecutive repetitions. Since these breaks generate forgetting, actual performance will be inferior to the performance forecasted by typical learning curve models.

This paper describes and analyzes a laboratory experiment designed to investigate the nature of forgetting in a working environment. The results of the experiment indicate that the degree of forgetting is a function of the break length and the level of experience gained prior to the break. The study investigated the impact of breaks within a range of one to eighty two days. The performance deterioration due to the breaks was just a few percentage points for a single day break and up to 70 percentage points for the longest breaks. A power curve was identified as a proper forgetting model to depict the relationship between break length, performance time before the break and the degree of forgetting.  相似文献

In this paper, design process and functionality of a portable single‐panel dual‐battery solar charger prototype are presented, achieving energy density of 571 W h kg−1 during a typical 3‐day infantry mission. The device may instantaneously charge up to two Li‐ion MR‐2791 batteries, supporting plug‐and‐play operation. The system consists of a lightweight custom solar panel, based on 20% efficient monocrystalline photovoltaics, and an intelligent power processing module. The panel contains eight transparent polymer‐encapsulated and camouflaged series‐connected six solar cell packs with antiparallel diodes, allowing partial shading operation. The power processing module consists of two synchronous current‐mode‐controlled buck converters, digital signal processor, and a microcontroller, supporting both maximum power point tracking of the solar panel with partial shading detection and multimode charging of Li‐ion packs while instantaneously communicating with the batteries. Power management algorithmic design is presented, based on ensuring system stability while supporting the required operation modes. System implementation stages and underlying issues are thoroughly discussed, and utilized hardware components are presented in detail. Experimental results of system testing under real outdoor conditions are presented to demonstrate the device functionality and energy yield capabilities.
