Voluntary control of human heart rate: Effect on reaction to aversive stimulation.

In anticipation of receiving painful stimuli, 20 female 21-27 yr old Ss learned to control their heart rate when provided with external feedback and reward for criterion heart rate changes and were instructed to increase or decrease their rate. Voluntary slowing of heart rate led to a relative reduction in the perceived aversiveness of the stimuli, particularly for those Ss who reported experiencing cardiac reactions to fear situations in daily life. It is concluded that biofeedback training for relevant physiological responses may possibly serve as a behavioral strategy for changing anxiety and fear reactions. Electrochemical Behavior of Nickel Hydride in Sodium Hydroxide Solutions

Electrochemical behavior of nickel hydride Ni₂H (-phase) is studied in 0.01–1 N NaOH by using common (VA) and cyclic (CVA) voltammetry, chronocoulometry, amperometry, and potentiometry. The limiting anodic and cathodic currents in VA and CVA curves are caused by the hydride decomposition via the following scheme Ni₂H -phase Ni + H_abs, where the intermediate -phase contains 0.003 at. % H, that is, one tenth that in the saturated -phase (0.03 at. %). At open circuit, the hydride maintains the equilibrium hydrogen potential. In the first 30 min, the hydrogen ionization from hydride is limited by solid-state diffusion and, later, the hydride decomposition. The anodic process involves ionization of sorbed hydrogen, while the cathodic process represents its electrochemical desorption: H₂O + H_ads + e H₂ + OH^–. The hysteresis observed in the cathodic CVA and open-circuit chronograms of the hydride potential in the beginning of anodic dissolution reflect the changes in the surface coverage of hydride with adsorbed hydrogen. The rate constant of hydride decomposition k, the rate Vitself, and the equilibrium constant K are as follows: k = k = 8 × 10^–5 s^–3, V = 3 × 10^–5 C/cm², and K = 10. The kinetic parameters of hydrogen electrochemical ionization from the hydride are b _a = 0.12 V and = 0.5.     

Cannabis versus other illicit drug use among methadone maintenance patients.

Few data exist on the prevalence and consequences of cannabis use among methadone maintenance patients. Weekly urine toxicology data from 70 patients in a methadone program were analyzed for evidence of cannabis as well as cocaine and benzodiazepines, and the relationship between use of these drugs and opiate use was examined. Patients who were positive for both cocaine and benzodiazepine, but not those positive for cannabis, were more likely also to test positive for opiates. Related literature is reviewed, and the issue of illicit drug use among such patients is discussed in the context of harm reduction. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)     

Exocrine function of the pancreas in children

Thirty-three children were followed up. There were 14 girls and 7 boys with constitutional-exogenous obesity and 12 normal children. To study proteolytic function of the pancreas, the activity of trypsin was determined by the Erlanger method modified by V.A. Shaternikov and that of its inhibitor in the blood serum by the Haverback et al. method modified by V.A. Shaternikov . Activation of trypsin and its inhibitor, depending on the degree of obesity was discovered. Activation of trypsin inhibitor points to the preservation of the compensatory possibilities of the pancreas in children with constitutional-exogenous obesity. Therefore, it is desirable that a complex of different measures should include wise dietetics promoting the normalization of disturbed processes in pathology under consideration.

PI/WO2 composite with two layers of reinforcement of carbon fabric

ABSTRACT

The paper presents a general scheme for producing polymer composites based on a thermoplastic polyimide and modified WO₂ and reinforcement of carbon fabric. Two layers of reinforcement of carbon fabric in the composites was carried out. The occurrence depth of carbon fabric in the composite is ~ 300 μm above and ~ 300 μm below. For composites with modified WO₂ and two layers of reinforcement an increase in bending strength by 27.8% with a content of 40 wt.% filler, and by 72.6% with a content of 80 wt.% filler, was observed when compared to composites without two layers of reinforcement.

A universal neural-network algorithm for calculating coordinates of a fixed radiation source in network spatially distributed radio monitoring systems despite the sensor cell??s shape is considered. Comparative analysis of a neuron-network algorithm when it is compared to statistically optimal and combined algorithms during implementation of differential-range, range and angle methods of location finding is conducted.
