Toward a conceptualization of the family's adaptation to a member's head injury: A critique of developmental stage models.

Developmental stage models proposed to conceptualize the family's adaptation to a head-injured member are critiqued. In general, hypotheses about stages have not been subjected to empirical investigation. Due to conceptual problems in the models, the stages do not meet the criteria of legitimate explanatory constructs. In their present form, stages proposed by different models are, at best, of heuristic value. It is argued that principles from S. Minuchin's (1974) structural family therapy model may be integrated with the stage model approach in a manner that helps resolve some conceptual problems. Thymic abscess with bacteremia and manubriosternal pyarthrosis in a geriatric patient

We describe a geriatric patient with acute substernal chest pain thought to be due to coronary heart disease, who was subsequently found to have Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia associated with infection of the thymus and manubriosternal joint. To our knowledge, this is the first report of (1) a thymic abscess in a geriatric patient, (2) a thymic abscess associated with bacteremia, (3) extra-articular extension of manubriosternal pyarthrosis, and (4) manubriosternal pyarthrosis in the geriatric age group.     

Student teams and comparison among equals: Effects on academic performance and student attitudes.

Investigated the independent effects of level of reward (recognition based on the performance of a 4- to 5-member cooperative learning team vs recognition based on individual performance) and comparison of student quiz scores (comparison with ability-homogeneous groups vs comparison with entire class) on student achievement and attitudes. Ss were 205 7th graders in 8 intact English classes. The experiment used a 2?×?2 (Reward Level?×?Comparison Group) factorial design, in which Ss studied grammar and punctuation for 10 wks. Results indicate reward level effects in favor of team reward and comparison group effects in favor of the comparison with equals on percentage of time on task, positive interpersonal perceptions, and other variables. Application of the dynamic photoelastic method to the study of stresses in piles

Conclusions 1. The techniques developed and the method of deciphering the experimental data permit investigating various practical dynamic problems by the photoelastic method.2. On the basis of the pile driving problem, we show the practical possibility of modelling an impact, and we obtain all the necessary scales for modelling, which may be utilized for application in other experimental methods.3.
