A comparison between the filter-based, laboratory ion chromatography technique and a semi-continuous analyzer (URG 9000B Ambient Ion Monitor [AIM]) was conducted to evaluate the performance of the AIM in measuring the concentrations of the main airborne ionic species in PM10. The study was carried out in an urban background area of London (UK) in 2013. The two methods showed an overall good correlation (R2 > 0.83) for nitrate, sulfate, chloride, ammonium, and magnesium and poor correlation was found for sodium, potassium, and calcium (R2 < 0.50). The AIM gave consistently higher concentrations for sodium and potassium, possibly due to a positive bias within the sampling unit. During high concentration episodes, both the efficiency of the particle extraction and removal of gases by the denuder may be reduced. A HEPA filter test demonstrated that the denuder was removing gaseous components effectively but that there was some potential for contamination. Overall, the AIM was found to be a good instrument for measuring hourly anion and cation concentrations in PM10 in urban sites.

Empirical and theoretical considerations suggest that representations of three-dimensional objects should be more difficult to rotate mentally than representations of two-dimensional objects. In this study, subjects were asked to make mirror-normal decisions with stimuli that differed in perceived dimensionality and in angle of rotation in the image plane. In a series of four experiments, the time to make mirror-normal decisions increased with increased orientation discrepancy between the stimuli, as found previously in the literature. In every experiment, however, response times were smaller for representations of two-dimensional shapes than for representations of three-dimensional shapes when the stimuli being compared were presented with a large angular discrepancy. Whereas response times increased linearly with orientation when representations of three-dimensional shapes were rotated, the increase in response time for representations of two-dimensional shapes was generally nonlinear. Overall, the evidence suggests that representations of three-dimensional shapes are mentally rotated at the same rate as representations of two-dimensional shapes for angles of rotation between 0° and 60°. For larger angles of rotation, however, the rate of mental rotation is greater for representations of two-dimensional shapes than for representations of three-dimensional shapes. Abstract

The benefits of green space and nature experiences are increasingly being recognised and translated into public health policy and practice. Alongside this trend, inclusion of all people into parks and nature has been an important area of parks and recreation practice. Nature inclusion for those with disabilities, youth, seniors and immigrants has become a focus of Alberta in Western Canada. This study was designed to examine the influence of two such government supported nature interventions, including day trips and a more extensive weekend or week-long nature experience, on mental well-being outcomes. It is a mixed methods pilot study (N = 37) with baseline and post-intervention measures of quality of life using the standard Quality of Life Inventory (QOLI) alongside other qualitative accounts. Quantitative findings, while not statistically significant, show a positive trend towards improved depression markers, greater health satisfaction, improved social relationships (in particular, love and friendship), as well as satisfaction with a sense of community and experiences of helping. In addition to comments within the QOLI, qualitative data were elicited through reflective writing during the nature interventions. Three dominant qualitative themes of inclusive nature experiences were found: ‘Sensory Activation’, ‘Reimagined Social Relations’ and ‘Reinvented Self’.  相似文献

We advance scholarship related to home foreclosures and neighborhood crime by employing Granger causality tests and multilevel growth modeling with annual data from Chicago neighborhoods over the period 1998–2009. We find that completed foreclosures temporally lead property crime and not vice versa. More completed foreclosures during a year both increase the level of property crime and slow its decline subsequently. This relationship is strongest in higher income, predominantly renter-occupied neighborhoods, contrary to the conventional wisdom. We did not find unambiguous, unidirectional causation in the case of violent crime and when filed foreclosures were analyzed.  相似文献

Listeriosis results from exposure to the foodborne pathogen Listeria monocytogenes. Although many different strains of L. monocytogenes are isolated from food, no definitive tests currently predict which isolates are most virulent. The objectives of this study were to address two major data gaps for risk assessors, variability among L. monocytogenes strains in pathogenicity and virulence. Strains used in our monkey clinical trial or additional food isolates were evaluated for their virulence and infectivity in mice. All strains were equally pathogenic to immunocompromised mice, causing deaths to 50% of the population 3 days after exposure to doses ranging from 2 to 3 log CFU. Doses resulting in 50% deaths on the fifth day after administration were 1 to 2 log lower than those on the third day, indicating that the full course of pathogenicity exceeds the 3-day endpoint in immunocompromised mice. Three strains were chosen for further testing for their virulence and infectivity in liver and spleen in normal (immunocompetent) mice. Virulence was not significantly different (P > 0.05) among the three strains, all resulting in deaths to 50% of mice at 5 to 7 log CFU by 5 days after administration. All strains were equally infective in liver or spleen, with higher numbers of L. monocytogenes directly correlated with higher doses of administration. In addition, there was no preference of organs by any strains. The lack of strain differences may reflect the limitation of the mouse model and suggests the importance of using various models to evaluate the pathogenicity and virulence of L. monocytogenes strains.  相似文献

Extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC) causes a variety of infections outside the gastrointestinal tract. Retail meats are frequently contaminated with E. coli strains, and they might serve as a vehicle for transmitting ExPEC. A total of 1,275 E. coli isolates recovered from ground beef, ground turkey, chicken breasts, and pork chops obtained in Georgia, Maryland, Oregon, and Tennessee in 2006 were investigated for the presence of ExPEC by using multiplex PCR. Identified ExPEC isolates were assigned to serogroups and phylogenetic groups and then analyzed for antimicrobial susceptibility. Approximately 16% (200 of 1,275) of the E. coli isolates were identified as ExPEC, based on defined genetic criteria. The occurrence of ExPEC was highest in E. coli isolated from ground turkey (23.5%) and chicken breasts (20.2%), and less frequent in isolates from pork chops (8.3%) and ground beef (3.4%). Phylogenetic grouping revealed that most (66.5%) ExPEC isolates fell into the same phylogenetic groups (B2 and D) as did virulent human ExPEC strains. Among the 15 antimicrobial agents tested, resistance to tetracycline (67.0%), sulfisoxazole (59.5%), and streptomycin (46.0%) was most frequent. Most ExPEC isolates (n = 163 [81.5%]) were resistant to at least one antimicrobial agent, and more than half (n = 114 [57%]) exhibited resistance to at least three drugs. This study found that ExPEC strains, including antimicrobial-resistant strains, were frequent among E. coli recovered from retail meats, especially those from chicken and turkey products. These findings indicate a need to better understand the role of certain meat types as potential sources of human ExPEC infection.  相似文献
