High-power passively mode-locked semiconductor lasers

We have developed optically pumped passively mode-locked vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting lasers. We achieved as much as 950 mW of mode-locked average power in chirped 15-ps pulses, or 530 mW in 3.9-ps pulses with moderate chirp. Both lasers operate at a repetition rate of 6 GHz and have a diffraction-limited output beam near 950 nm. In continuous-wave operation, we demonstrate an average output power as high as 2.2 W. Device designs with a low thermal impedance and a smooth gain spectrum are the key to such performance. We discuss design and fabrication of the gain structures and, particularly, their thermal properties     

Electrical conductivity in iodine-doped ethyl cellulose

The electrical conductivity of solution-grown ethyl cellulose (EC) films, 5–30 μm thick, has been studied in the sandwich configuration (metal–EC–metal) as a function of iodine concentration from 0.5 to 5.0 wt% ratio. The studies were conducted in the temperature range 333–383 K, while the field was varied over the range (3.0–5.5) × 10⁴V/cm. Aluminium was used as the lower electrode, while the upper electrode was of Al, Ag, Cu, Au or Sn. Certain transient effects such as a large burst of current immediately after the application of field were observed. An attempt was made to identify the nature of the current by comparing the observed dependence on electric field, electrode material and temperature with the respective characteristic features of the existing theories of electrical conduction. The results show that the electrical conduction follows Ohm's law at lower fields, while at higher fields, space-charge limited current (SCLC) was observed. It was also found that Richardson–Schottky emission was responsible, to some extent, for the transport of charge carriers in the polymer. The conductivity of the films increased on doping with iodine. The dopant molecules are considered to act as additional trapping centes and provide links between the polymer molecules in the amorphous region, thus resulting in the formation of charge transfer complexes.     

The role of dopamine in the mechanism of the regulation of the digestive-transport functions of the enterocyte membrane during stress

The L-DOPA and sulpiridinum effects on the enzymatic transporting function of the enterocytes' membrane, were studied in rats under stress. The L-DOPA was shown to hinder the absorption rate of glucose, whereas sulpiridinum was shown to suppress the main enzymes excepting snerase and alkaline phosphatase, to increase the monomeric and hydrolysate glucose transport. The L-DOPA seems to play a modifying role in the regulation and integration of the digestive-transporting function of the enterocytes' membrane in rats under stress.     

On the microhardness testing of electrically stressed poly(phenylene oxide): Polystyrene blends

Microhardness measurements have been performed on untreated (virgin) and electrically stressed, solvent‐cast laboratory‐prepared samples of pure poly(phenylene oxide) (PPO), pure polystyrene (PS), and PPO : PS polyblends with different weight proportions. Results of such measurement on untreated polyblend sample show that microhardness (H_v) increases with increase in the content of PS up to 10 wt %, which attributed to the existence of homogeneous phase morphology. However, this feature is not observable in samples containing higher content of PS. Electrical stress is found to modify considerably the mechanical property of polymer. The effect of electric field on the microhardness of such samples (PPO : PS :: 90 : 10) has been characterized by the existence of a peak. Trapping of charge carriers in electrically stressed samples imparts hardening to the polyblend up to an applied step field of 190 kV/cm. However, the excessive charging beyond this step field value destroys this characteristic. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2008     

Cervical spine infections

Thoracoscopy provides a minimally invasive technique for the diagnosis and management of many posterior mediastinal masses. Benign neurogenic tumors, esophageal tumors, and bronchogenic cysts all can be approached using video-assisted thoracic surgical (VATS) techniques. Malignant lesions are still best approached via open thoracotomy. VATS techniques allow for less pain and dysfunction and can result in shortened hospital stays.     

Glucose-dependent uptake of chromium in human and rat insulin-sensitive tissues

Su Vida, Su Salud/Your Life, Your Health is a community program to increase participation in breast and cervical cancer screening. This program illustrates the diffusion of an innovative outreach strategy from a research environment to two local health departments. The program uses A Su Salud, the communication model in which positive role models are featured in the media, and community volunteers who give positive social reinforcement. Local health departments in Galveston and Corpus Christi, TX, were selected to implement the model because of excessive mortality rates in the region and the departments' adequate level of resources and commitment. Over an 18-month period, 54 stories of role models appeared in the media in Corpus Christi, and 60 appeared in Galveston. There were 490 volunteers active in Corpus Christi and 279 in Galveston. Of 365 inquiries to the Corpus Christi program, 35 percent were from the Mexican American target group of women ages 40-70. Of 1,457 women who contacted the Galveston program, 9 percent were from the African American target group ages 40-70. Local health departments are well-suited to participation in cancer control research applications because they have direct access to high-risk populations and have the authority to institutionalize effective interventions.
