Supporting the free exercise of religion in the group home context

Ways were delineated in which group home employees can support individuals living in the home in the active expression of faith, both inside and outside the group home environment, and at the same time protect the freedom of others in the home who choose not to be involved in religious activities. After briefly reviewing some assumptions underlying the 1992 AAMR definition of mental retardation and describing the capability of religious expression for individuals with cognitive impairment, we presented several guidelines to assist group home staff members.     

Surface morphology of diffusion aluminide coatings

The surface structure and morphology of aluminide coatings can be important in their performance both in oxidation or hot corrosion resistance and in their mechanical behavior. However, little information is available on the effects of aluminide coating deposition conditions on the coating surface. A study of the effects of aluminide processing parameters on both pure nickel and a nickel-base superalloy, IN 738, revealed a systematic change in surface morphology from a rough, serrated, fine-grain surface which occurs with a high aluminum activity deposition process to a smooth coarse-grain structure for the low aluminum activity process. A systematic change in coating color was also observed for both the pure metal and the alloy with changing coating aluminum contents. Results are reported and related to the coating phases present during the deposition process.     

Circadian rhythm in plasma concentrations of gamma-hydroxybutyric acid in alcoholics

Gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) was orally administered to six alcoholics at 09.00 and 23.00 h. The plasma concentrations of GHB show a clear circadian pattern, the area under the curve in the daytime experiments being 61% of that in the night experiments. The significance of alcohol dehydrogenase, the catabolic enzyme of GHB, for the difference is discussed. It is concluded that, although the activity of alcohol dehydrogenase in alcoholics is quantitatively disturbed, it remains subject to physiologic circadian activation.     

Immune parameters in athletes before and after strenuous exercise

Secretory IgA levels were studied in nationally ranked Nordic skiers before and after the national cross-country races held in February 1981. Comparing the skiers with age-matched controls, there was significantly lower level of salivary IgA before the race. Concentrations of IgA decreased further following the competition (50 kn for males; 20 km for females) to very low levels. There also were a significant increase in the percentage of B lymphocytes and a decrease in the null population (non-T, non-B) in the athletes after the race compared with the controls. The mechanism responsible for these changes is unknown, but the low salivary IgA levels may result from depletion of nasal fluid and/or malfunction of the mucosal plasma cells due to a decrease temperature in the mucous membranes. We speculated that a temporary antibody deficiency on the mucosal surface might lead to a susceptibility to acquiring viral and bacterial infections, especially during the interval immediately following strenuous exercise.     

Radip induction of ether anaesthesia and controlled maintenacne by a combination of intravenous and inhalation administration without the risk of explosion

The induction and maintenance of anaesthesia with ether using a combined intravenous infusion and a constant low inspired concentration are discribed. Predictions from a mathematical model were checked against animal experiments. Anaesthesia occurred within 5 min. The mehtod obviates the need for explosive mixtures.     

The structure and interdiffusional degradation of aluminide coatings on oxide-dispersion-strengthened alloys

A study of the effects of the composition and coating processing of oxide- dispersion-strengthened superalloys on the structure and diffusional stability of aluminide coatings was undertaken. Increasing the aluminum content of the substrate resulted in the formation of a more typical nickel-base superalloy aluminide coating structure that is more resistant to spallation during high temperature isothermal exposure. The coating application process also affected the coating stability; a low aluminum outward diffusion type resulted in greater apparent stability. A scanning electron microscopy deep etching and fractography examination technique was used in an attempt to establish the location and kinetics of void formation. Aluminide protective lifetimes are still found to be far short of the mechanical property capabilities of the alloy.
