The effect of thalamic lesions on primate taste preference

Taste preferences and aversions were examined before and after the placement of bilateral, electrophysiologically guided electrolytic lesions of the thalamic taste area in five Old World monkeys. The only consistent changes shown by all lesioned monkeys on the 30-min, single-bottle intake test were a significantly attenuated consumption of 0.003 M quinine hydrochloride and a significantly elevated intake of 0.1 M sodium chloride. These specific taste deficits are contrary to the global hypogeusia predicted on the basis of previous research. A revised definition of the boundaries of the gustatory thalamus is suggested and the merits of the thalamic monkey preparation are compared with those of the decerebrate rat model.     

Imaging and pathological features of primary malignant rhabdoid tumours of the brain and spine

In this article two cases of primary malignant extrarenal rhabdoid tumour are described. In the affected children the brain and the spinal cord were the primary sites of origin of the tumour. The imaging findings are presented and the pathology discussed. Although the imaging features are non-specific, rhabdoid tumour should be included in the differential diagnosis of childhood intracranial and spinal neoplasms.     

Ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia-clefting (EEC) syndrome: dominant inheritance and variable expression

The influence of thymosterin on immunological reactivity of NZB mice was investigated. Thymosterin was administered three times per week for a period of six weeks to male and female NZB mice. Only lymphocytes from untreated female mice gave the positive results in the macrophage migration inhibition test using native DNA as the stimulating antigen. This effect was suppressed in thymosterin treated females. The administration of thymosterin therefore appears to correct the in vitro delayed hypersensitivity to DNA antigen.     

The effect of body fluids on polynucleotide-induced fibroblast interferon and virus-induced leukocyte interferon

Micalite (microcapsulated lithium carbonate with a retarded action) was used for the treatment of manic states and the prevention of attacks of manic-depressive psychosis in 40 patients. The preparation was administered once daily. This provided the necessary concentration of lithium in the blood on a stable level. According to its therapeutical effectiveness and the frequency of side-effects micalite does not differ from other lithium preparations with a simgle daily administration of micalite there are much less distubrances in the treament regime.
