Bridging student health risks and academic achievement through comprehensive school health programs

In the National Action Plan for Comprehensive School Health Education, representatives for over 40 health, education, and social service organizations viewed education and health as independent systems. Participation concluded that healthy children learn better, and they cautioned that no curriculum can compensate for deficiencies in student health status. While literature confirms the complexity of health issues confronting today's students, schools face enormous pressure to improve academic skills. Local school leaders and stakeholders often remain unconvinced that improving student health represents a means to achieving improved academic outcomes. A rich body of literature confirms a direct link between student health risk behavior and education outcomes, education behavior, and student attitudes about education. This article summarizes relevant information concerning the health risk behavioral categories of intentional injuries; tobacco; alcohol, and other drugs; dietary, physical activity, and sexual risk behaviors.     

Assessment of platelet activation by coronary sinus blood sampling during balloon angioplasty and directional coronary atherectomy

Three markers of platelet activation (platelet-derived microparticles, fibrinogen binding and expression of P-selectin) were assessed by flow cytometry during diagnostic coronary angiography and therapeutic coronary interventions. In 24 patients undergoing diagnostic angiography, blood was collected to determine if our sampling techniques or coronary angiography caused platelet activation. Changes during diagnostic angiography were used to establish baseline values and interpret changes during coronary interventions. In 21 patients, blood samples were obtained at 5 time points during percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) (n = 17) or directional coronary atherectomy (DCA) (n = 4). During coronary interventions, mean values for the percentage of platelets expressing P-selectin or binding fibrinogen increased, but with considerable variation among patients. Individual responses for platelet activation markers in each patient were characterized using a twofold increase to indicate elevation related to the intervention. Patients were classified as having complicated or uncomplicated procedures based on the presence of acute closure, dissection, or thrombus observed by angiography. There were no differences in the percentage of elevated markers between patients with uncomplicated (12.5%) and complicated (19%) PTCA procedures. However, patients treated with DCA had more elevated markers (38%) than those treated with PTCA (15%) (p = 0.04). Our data suggest that the extent of platelet activation in individual patients cannot be predicted by common angiographic findings or complications. More markers of platelet activation were present after DCA and may reflect a greater degree of vascular trauma associated with this procedure.     

Failure of colostral immunoglobulin transfer in calves dying from infectious disease

Serum IgG1 concentrations of calves less than 3 weeks old and dying from infectious disease were significantly lower (P less than 0.01) than those of clinically normal calves. Fifty percent of the dead calves had serum IgG1 concentrations that were more than 2 standard deviations below the normal mean, and an additional 35% had IgG1 concentrations that were more than 1 standard deviation below the normal mean. Low IgG1 concentrations were attributed to failures in passive transfer of colostral immunoglobulin. The few calves dying of noninfectious causes generally had normal serum immunoglobulin concentrations. The results of this study emphasize the importance of adequate colostral intake and absorption to the neonatal calf. In view of the large numbers of calves that die from neonatal infection each year, it may be assumed that failure in passive transfer, as reflected by low serum immunoglobulin concentrations, is one of the most important factors influencing neonatal calf mortality.     

In vitro dog detrusor strip contractile responses and calcium ion activity

An attempt was made to immunise lambs by the intra-muscular injection of concentrated metabolites obtained from the in vitro culture of Ostertagia circumcincta, by the oral administration of lyophilised metabolites or by the subcutaneous injection of living third, fourth and fifth stage worms grown in vitro. Protection appeared to have been elicited by each treatment as the worm burdens, the lengths of the worms and the faecal worm egg counts in the immunised lambs were less than those of the control lambs.     

The NH2- and COOH-terminal amino acid sequence of nuclear protein A24

The NH2- and COOH-terminal sequence of nuclear portein A24 has been determined by automatic Edman degradation and carboxypeptidase A and B digestion. Protein A24 is of interest because it is composed in part of histone 2A (Goldknofp, I.L., and Busch, H., (1975) Biochem, Biophys. Res. Commun. 65, 951-960). The sequence of the first 37 NH2-terminal residues is: Met-Gln-Ile-Phe-Val-Lys-Thr-Leu-Thr-Gly-Lys-Thr-Ile-Thr-Leu-Glu-Val-Glu-Pro-Ser-Asp-Thr-Ile-Glu-Asn-Val-Lys-Ala-Lys-Ile-Gln-Asp-Lys-Glu-Gly-Ile-Pro- This sequence is not homologous to any known histone sequence. It contains regions of internal homology (italics). The COOH-terminal amino acid sequence is the same as that of histone 2A, naely: -His-His-Lys-Ala-Lys-Gly-Lys-COOH.     

In vivo neutron activation analysis measurements of calcium using the 40Ca(n, alpha) 37Ar reaction

The authors report the possible interference due to minovine when seeking tricyclic antidepressant derivatives in biological material or pharmaceutical substances. However, their work has shown that kinetic studies using absorption spectrophotometry of the colouration obtained with phosphoric-ceric reagent and thin layer adsorbant chromatography make it possible to eliminate the doubt and identify the Vinca-Minor alkaloid.
