The high efficiencies of large volume 'coaxial' Ge(Li) detectors make them attractive for coincidence experiments. However the electric field in this configuration is not uniform and hence the charge collection times vary widely as a function of position in the detector. The resultant variations in output pulse shape limit coincidence resolving times. In our studies one 511 keV annihilation quantum (22Na source) was detected in a scintillation counter to establish the zero (start) time and its partner in the Ge(Li) detector (at 1500 V) was accepted only when a full energy pulse was registered. The stop pulse to the timesorter was generated by the leading edge of the Ge(Li) preamplifier pulse at ~ 10% (50 keV) of maximum amplitude. Scanning the detector with a 1 mm wide collimated ?-beam resulted in time distributions whose full widths at half-maximum (fwhm) were ~ 8 nsec in the coaxial region of the detector broadening to ~ 35 nsec at the closed end. The distributions are skew in shape with long approximately exponential tails having half value slopes of ~ 5 to ~ 20 nsec. Similar studies with stop pulses generated at ~ 50% of maximum amplitude show much broader time distributions. The position variation in pulse shapes due to charge collection time was confirmed from oscilloscope photographs by triggering with the scintillation counter 'start' pulse.  相似文献

The electrical conductivities of glasses in the ZrF4-BaF2 and ZrF4-BaF2-BaCl2 systems have been measured as a function of temperature. The conductivies of binary fluorozirconate glasses had values comparable to those previously measured for ternary systems. The introduction of chlorine in the glass network markedly decreased the electrical conductivity and increased the activation energy for conduction. The decrease in conductivity could not be explained exclusively on the basis of zero mobility for the Cl atoms; it is proposed that these atoms effectively hinder the motion of the conducting fluorine ions. The activation energy for electrical conduction in fluorozirconate glasses was analysed via a modification of the Anderson and Stuart model for anionically conducting glasses, in which the electrostatic energy was found to predominate. In chlorofluorozirconate glasses, this term appears to be less predominant.  相似文献

This two-part study reviews data from a recently developed colony of New Zealand white rabbits with familial, nonsyndromic unilateral coronal suture synostosis, and this second part presents neuropathological findings and age-related changes in intracranial volume (ICV) and intracranial pressure (ICP) in 106 normal rabbits and 56 craniosynostotic rabbits from this colony. Brain morphology and anteroposterior length were described in 44 rabbit fetuses and perinates (27 normal; 17 synostosed). Middle meningeal artery patterns were qualitatively assessed from 2-D PCC MRI VENC scans and endocranial tracings from 15, 126-day-old rabbits (8 normal, 7 rabbits with unicoronal synostosis). Brain metabolism was evaluated by assessing 18F-FDG uptake with high-resolution PET scanning in 7, 25-day-old rabbits (3 normal, 4 with unicoronal or bicoronal synostosis). Intracranial contents and ICV were assessed using 3-D CT scanning of the skulls of 30 rabbits (20 normal,10 with unicoronal synostosis) at 42 and 126 days of age. Serial ICP data were collected from 66 rabbits (49 normal; 17 with unicoronal synostosis) at 25 and 42 days of age. ICP was assessed in the epidural space using a Codman NeuroMonitor microsensor transducer. Results revealed that cerebral cortex morphology was similar between normal and synostosed fetuses around the time of synostosis. Significantly (P<0.05) decreased A-P cerebral hemisphere growth rates and asymmetrical cortical remodeling were noted with increasing age in synostotic rabbits. In addition, rabbits with unicoronal suture synostosis exhibited asymmetrical middle meningeal artery patterns, decreased and asymmetrical brain metabolism, a "beaten-copper" intracranial appearance, significantly (P<0.05) decreased ICV, and significantly (P<0.01) elevated ICP compared with normal control rabbits. The advantages and disadvantages of these rabbits as a model for human familial, nonsyndromic unicoronal suture synostosis are discussed, especially in light of recent clinical neuropathological, ICV, and ICP findings recorded in human craniosynostotic studies.  相似文献

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that is the most common cause of dementia in the elderly. It is a clinical-pathologic entity characterized by progressive dementia associated with the neuropathologic hallmarks of Abeta amyloid plaques, neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs), neuronal loss, and amyloid angiopathy. Three "causative" AD genes (i.e., genes in which a mutation is sufficient to result in clinical AD) for early-onset familial Alzheimer's disease (FAD) and one "susceptibility" gene that affects risk and age of onset of AD in familial and sporadic late-onset AD have been identified. The three causative genes are the amyloid precursor protein (APP gene) on chromosome 21, the presenilin-1 gene on chromosome 14, and the presenilin-2 gene on chromosome 1. The susceptibility gene is the apolipoprotein E (APOE) gene on chromosome 19. Investigations of the normal and aberrant function of these genes will provide insights into the mechanisms underlying AD and will suggest new strategies for therapeutic intervention.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The prognostic value of tomographic myocardial perfusion imaging with dipyridamole or adenosine in patients with left bundle-branch block has not been established. METHODS AND RESULTS: The study group consisted of 245 patients with left bundle-branch block who underwent tomographic (single photon emission tomography) myocardial perfusion imaging with thallium-201 (n=173) or technetium-99m sestamibi (n=72) and either dipyridamole (n=153) or adenosine (n=92) stress. Patients were prospectively classified into two groups. Patients were classified as "high risk" if they had (1) a large severe fixed defect (n=28), (2) a large reversible defect (n=36), or (3) cardiac enlargement and either increased pulmonary uptake (thallium) or a decreased resting ejection fraction (sestamibi) (n=20). The remaining 161 patients (66% of the study group) were at "low risk." Follow-up was 99% complete at 3+/-1.4 years. Three-year overall survival was 57% in the high-risk group compared with 87% in the low-risk group (P<.0001). Survival free of cardiac death/nonfatal myocardial infarction/cardiac transplantation was 55% in the high-risk group and 93% in the low-risk group (P<.0001). The presence of a high-risk scan had significant incremental prognostic value after adjustment for age, sex, diabetes, and previous myocardial infarction (P<.0001). Patients with a low-risk scan had an overall survival that was not significantly different from that of a US age-matched population (P=.86). CONCLUSIONS: Tomographic myocardial perfusion imaging with adenosine or dipyridamole stress provides important prognostic information in patients with left bundle-branch block, which is incremental to clinical assessment.  相似文献

Adipose tissue is considered as the body's largest storage organ for energy in the form of triglycerides, which are mobilised through the lipolysis process to provide fuel to other organs and to deliver substrates to liver for gluconeogenesis (glycerol) and lipoprotein synthesis (free fatty acids). The release of glycerol and free fatty acids is intensively regulated by hormones and agents. In man, the major hormones are insulin (inhibition of lipolysis) and catecholamines (stimulation of lipolysis). Physiological factors such as dieting, physical exercise and ageing also regulate lipolysis. The lipolytic process is modified in pathological conditions, e.g. obesity (both upper and lower obesity), diabetes (non- and insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus), and dyslipidaemia (in particular, familial combined hyperlipidaemia). The regulation of lipolysis is complex because of the heterogeneity of fat depots (visceral versus subcutaneous), which may contribute to the well-known gender differences in accumulation of fat. Since visceral fat depot is directly drained into the liver and has a high turnover of visceral triglycerides, "portal" free fatty acids seem to be an important pathophysiological factor in common complications of obesity (in particular, metabolic syndrome). New advances in genetic studies indicate that polymorphisms in several genes encoding for proteins that regulate the lipolysis process are important for the development of obesity and its complications.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: We sought to prospectively identify patients with stunning and hyperkinesia at hospital discharge on the basis of mismatches between left ventricular (LV) function and infarct size as assessed by technetium-99m (Tc-99m) sestamibi perfusion tomographic imaging. BACKGROUND: Mechanical indexes of LV function may not accurately reflect myocardial damage after acute myocardial infarction (MI) because of myocardial stunning and compensatory hyperkinesia in noninfarct-related territories. Myocardial perfusion techniques are unaffected by these variables. METHODS: Eighty-four patients with acute MI underwent hospital admission and discharge Tc-99m-sestamibi tomographic imaging. Global LV ejection fraction (LVEF) was measured at hospital discharge and 6 weeks later. The perfusion defect size was quantified and expressed as a percentage of the LV. The discharge perfusion defect, which is a measure of infarct size, was used to predict the 6-week LVEF for each patient based on a previously reported regression equation. Patients were classified into one of three groups depending on whether their LVEF at hospital discharge fell within, above or below one standard error (6.8 LVEF points) of the predicted 6-week LVEF. RESULTS: There were 48 patients classified as having a "match" between function and infarct size; these patients demonstrated no significant change in LVEF at 6 weeks. There were 21 patients (25%) classified as "mismatch stunned" who had discharge LVEFs lower than those predicted by infarct size. These patients demonstrated a significant improvement in mean LVEF at 6 weeks (mean [+/-SD] discharge LVEF 0.41 +/- 0.08, 6-week LVEF 0.47 +/- 0.10; p = 0.003). Fifteen patients (18%) were classified as "mismatch-hyperkinetic." The mean LVEF for these patients significantly declined at 6 weeks (discharge LVEF 0.64 +/- 0.06, 6-week LVEF 0.58 +/- 0.09; p = 0.002). There was a marked increase in LVEF within the infarct zone (8 +/- 15 LVEF points; p = 0.03) for patients predicted to have stunning and a marked decline in LVEF outside the infarct zone (9 +/- 15 LVEF points; p = 0.06) in patients predicted to have hyperkinesia. Both discharge LVEF (p < 0.0001) and group classification (p = 0.005) were independent predictors of LVEF 6 weeks later. CONCLUSIONS: Perfusion imaging with Tc-99m-sestamibi can identify post-MI patients at hospital discharge in whom LV function is discordant with the measured infarct size. Patients with stunning have late increases in LVEF; patients with hyperkinesia have late decreases. This methodology, performed at discharge, is predictive of late changes in LV function.  相似文献
