We present a novel application of the Zobrist hashing method, known in the computer chess literature, to simulation of diffusional phase transformations in metal alloys. A history of previously visited states can be easily maintained, allowing very fast lookup of energies and transition rates calculated earlier in the simulation. The method has been applied to the simulation of a Fe-1at.%Cu system, with simple potentials and a transition rate for diffusional events approximated from the difference in internal energy between trial states. In this simple model at temperatures of 1073 K we find that 61.2% of the states considered during the simulation have been seen previously, and that this proportion rises to 85.1% at 773 K and even to 99.9% at 373 K. Rapid recall of these states reduces the computational time taken for the same sequence of atom-vacancy exchange moves by a factor of 6.3 at 773 K rising to over 100 at 373 K. We suggest that a similar speedup factor will be found using more sophisticated models of diffusion and that the method can, with small modifications, be applied to a wide range of kinetic Monte Carlo simulations of atomistic diffusion processes.  相似文献

A new type of reference ionization gauge is described. This gauge is similar to the triode type ionization gauge but has a smaller residual current and better high pressure performance. One version of the new gauge has a nitrogen sensitivity of 0.073 Pa?1, which is constant to within 1% at pressures up to 0.3 Pa, and a nitrogen pressure equivalent to its residual current of 10?6 Pa. The long term behaviour of its sensitivity was compared with Bayard-Alpert and triode type ionization gauges over several hundred operating hours. The sensitivity of the new type of gauge changed by less than 0.1% per 100 h while under similar conditions the triodes drifted at rates of up to 0.45% per 100 h and the Bayard-Alpert gauge sensitivities drifted unpredictably, sometimes changing sharply by several percent. A second version of the new gauge showed similar long term behaviour to the triode with a residual current equivalent to a pressure of potentially less than 10?7 Pa.  相似文献

The phase (inner) and neutral (outer) tubular conductors are each formed from two layers of niobium-clad copper strips laid in helices of opposite sense. The dielectric is lapped high density polyethylene tape impregnated with helium. The lay angles of the conductor strips are chosen to meet the requirements of thermal contraction and magnetic pressure from large fault currents.The main advantage of using twin, instead of single conductor layers is that there is no axial magnetic flux within the core and hence the associated problems are avoided. A further advantage is that when the thickness of the two copper layers is optimized there is a useful reduction in power dissipation when the superconductor is normal. This improves both the cable's ability to carry fault currents and the stability of the conductor against reversion to the normal state when carrying the rated current. Since the optimum thickness of each layer (~0.5 mm) is about half that in a single layer cable, the double layer would not be significantly more expensive.  相似文献

Resource economists involved in regional analysis of supply and demand relationships are concerned with the cost, reliability, and relevance of alternative levels of data detail. While analyses based on much data detail and model complexity may avoid many of the model specification and data measurement errors found in less detailed, aggregate approaches, they are relatively costly and time-consuming. Unfortunately, error is also incurred when detailed data are aggregated for analytical purposes. In this case study, a linear programming model designed to analyze an area's agricultural production potential is constructed and run at three different levels of soils detail. Policy implications of model solutions at each level of detail and trade-offs between error levels, study costs, and needs of planning officials are discussed. It is concluded that the proper level of detail ultimately depends upon the shape of the users' demand function for information.  相似文献

Acetylcholine plays an important role in cortical arousal. Adenosine is released during increased metabolism and has been suggested to be a sleep-promoting factor. To understand the interaction of acetylcholine and adenosine in regulating cortical excitability, we examined the effect of carbachol on NMDA-evoked adenosine release and identified the muscarinic receptor subtype that mediated this effect in adult rat cortical slices in vitro. Carbachol (to 300 microM) alone did not affect the basal release of adenosine. However, carbachol (100 microM) induced a 253% increase in NMDA (20 microM)-evoked adenosine release in the presence of Mg2+. In the absence of Mg2+, carbachol's potentiating effect was less (60% increase). The nonselective muscarinic antagonist atropine (1.5 microM) blocked the facilitatory effect of carbachol on NMDA-evoked adenosine release, and this was mimicked by the M3-selective antagonist 4-diphenylacetoxy-N-methylpiperidine (1 microM). Neither an M1-selective dose of pirenzepine (50 nM) nor the M2-selective antagonist methoctramine (1 microM) affected carbachol's action on NMDA-evoked adenosine release. Carbachol had no effect on adenosine release evoked by alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methylisoxazole-4-propionate (AMPA). These results suggest that acetylcholine does not affect basal adenosine release but enhances NMDA receptor-mediated evoked adenosine release by acting at M3 receptors in the cortex. This interaction may have a role in regulating cortical neuronal excitability on a long-term basis.  相似文献

Radon movement through 12 test slabs with different cracks, pipe penetrations, cold joints, masonry blocks, sealants, and tensile stresses characterized the importance of these anomalous structural domains. Diffusive and advective radon transport were measured with steady-state air pressure differences controlled throughout the deltaP = 0 to 60 Pa range. Diffusion coefficients (deltaP = 0) initially averaged 6.5 x 10(-8) m2 s(-1) among nine slabs with only 8% standard deviation, but increased due to drying by 0.16% per day over a 2-y period to an average of 2.0 x 10(-7) m2 s(-1). An asphalt coating reduced diffusion sixfold but an acrylic surface sealant had no effect. Diffusion was 42 times higher in solid masonry blocks than in concrete and was not affected by small cracks. Advective transport (deltaP < or = 60 Pa) was negligible for the slabs (10(-16) m2 permeability), pipe penetrations, and caulked gaps, but was significant for cracks, disturbed pipe penetrations, cold joints, masonry blocks, and concrete under tensile stress. Crack areas calculated to be as small as 10(-7) m2 significantly increased radon advection. Algebraic expressions predict air velocity and effective crack width from enhanced radon transport and air pressures. Masonry blocks, open cracks, and slab cold joints enhance radon penetration but stressed slabs, undisturbed pipe penetrations, and sealed cracks may not.  相似文献

Accuracy of diagnoses rendered using a live video telepathology network was assessed for permanent sections of surgical pathology specimens. To determine accuracy, telepathology diagnoses were compared with those obtained by directly viewing the glass slide using a standard microscope. A total of 294 cases were read via both telepathology and glass slide by attending pathologists at a tertiary care medical center. Overall accuracy was defined as exact concordance between diagnoses. Clinically insignificant differences in diagnoses were excluded to determine clinically significant accuracy. For the 285 cases with complete data, the overall accuracy for telepathology was 0.912 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.872-0.941), whereas the overall accuracy for glass slide readings was 0.968 (95% CI, 0.939-0.985). This difference is statistically significant (p = 0.009). When focusing on clinically significant discrepancies, where the difference in diagnosis might affect therapeutic decisions, the video accuracy was only slightly less than the glass slide accuracy (0.965 [95% CI, 0.934-0.982] vs. 0.982 [95% CI, 0.957-0.994], respectively), but this difference is not statistically significant (p = 0.302). Most of the cases with clinically significant differences involved lesions with inherently high interobserver variation. Certainty of diagnosis did not differ between video and glass slide readings (p = 0.911), but there was an association between certainty of diagnosis and diagnostic accuracy for video (p = 0.003 for clinically significant accuracies). Based on these findings, we recommend when using this telepathology system that only preliminary diagnoses should be given in the following situations: for diagnostic areas with known high interobserver variability; when the consultant has any degree of uncertainty about the presence or absence of the lesion in question; and when there is insufficient experience using telepathology as a diagnostic medium.  相似文献

The effects of 1 microM concentrations of arachidonic acid hydroperoxide (HPETES) products of 5-, 12- and 15-lipoxygenase on Na+, K(+)-ATPase activity were investigated in synaptosomal membrane preparations from rat cerebral cortex. 5-HPETE inhibited Na+, K(+)-ATPase activity by up to 67 %. In contrast, 12-HPETE and 15-HPETE did not inhibit Na+, K(+)-ATPase activity. In addition, neither 5-HETE or LTA4 inhibited Na+, K(+)-ATPase activity. Dose-response studies indicated that 5-HPETE was a potent (IC25 = 10(-8) M) inhibitor of Na+, K(+)-ATPase activity. These findings indicate that 5-HPETE inhibits Na+, K(+)-ATPase activity by a mechanism that is dependent on the hydroperoxide position and independent of further metabolism by 5-lipoxygenase. It is proposed that 5-HPETE production by 5-lipoxygenase and subsequent inhibition of neuronal Na+, K(+)-ATPase activity may be a mechansim for modulating synaptic transmission.  相似文献

We reviewed the cases of sixty-two patients who had had a subcutaneous sarcoma to determine the effect of tumor and treatment-related variables on the rates of survival and local recurrence. Fifty-nine (95 per cent) of the patients had had an operation at another hospital before being referred to us. Twenty-nine (47 per cent) of the sixty-two tumors were high-grade, forty-two (68 per cent) were small (five centimeters or less), and thirty (48 per cent) were malignant fibrous histiocytomas. We followed a treatment strategy that consisted of repeat excision with the goal of obtaining wide margins. Excluding thirteen patients who had had a palpable local recurrence at the time of presentation, twenty (49 per cent) of forty-one patients who had had a marginal excision at another hospital had microscopic residual tumor on repeat excision. At a median of fifty-six months after the repeat excision, fifty (81 per cent) of the sixty-two patients had been continuously disease-free, one had no evidence of disease, eight had died of the disease, and three had died of other causes. The five-year rate of disease-free survival was 85 per cent (fifty-three of sixty-two patients). There were three local recurrences, all in patients who had had a marginal resection. No recurrences were noted in patients who had had a wide local excision of the tumor or of the previous operative field. Multivariate analysis revealed that a large tumor (greater than five centimeters), a marginal excision, and adjuvant radiation therapy were associated with a worse prognosis. Excellent rates of survival for patients who have a subcutaneous sarcoma, including those who have a large or high-grade tumor and those who have residual tumor following a previous operation, can be obtained with carefully planned operative treatment alone. We recommend operative excision or repeat excision with wide margins because of the high prevalence of residual tumor. Size is the most important tumor-related factor, and the operative margin is the most important treatment-related factor. The additional value of adjuvant radiation therapy remains unproved.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Infection with cancer-linked human papillomavirus (HPV) types such as HPV type 16 (HPV16) is the most important risk factor in the development of cervical cancer. It has been shown that immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibody responses against HPV16 virus-like particles (VLPs) are specifically associated with genital HPV16 infection. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to determine the temporal relationships between the presence of HPV16 VLP-specific IgGs, HPV16 infection patterns, and the course of premalignant cervical disease. METHODS: Plasma samples from 133 women who had been diagnosed originally with mild to moderate cervical dyskaryosis and enrolled in a prospective non-intervention cohort study conducted in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, from 1991 through 1996 were analyzed for the presence of HPV16 VLP-specific IgGs by use of an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. A detailed analysis was performed on 43 women with different HPV16 infection patterns during a follow-up period of 10-34 months. Progression or regression of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) lesions was monitored by cytologic and colposcopic testing at intervals of 3-4 months. HPV typing in cervical smears was performed by use of a polymerase chain reaction-based assay. Statistical analysis of the serologic data was performed by use of the Mann-Whitney U test or 2 x 2 table analyses. RESULTS: The presence of HPV16 VLP-specific IgGs in the plasma of the patients was found to be associated with the presence of HPV16 DNA in the cervical smear. Significantly higher proportions of patients with persistent HPV16 infections (i.e., who were polymerase chain reaction positive in three to 11 consecutive tests) than of patients with cleared HPV16 infections were found to be positive for the presence of HPV16 VLP-specific IgGs (18 [69.2%] of 26 versus nine [28.1%] of 32, respectively; P = .003). HPV16 VLP-specific IgGs were consistently detected in all women (n = 11) who were persistently HPV16 DNA positive during follow-up and whose disease ultimately progressed to CIN III (histologically diagnosed severe dysplasia or carcinoma in situ). CONCLUSION: HPV16 VLP-specific IgG responses are present in the plasma of a majority of patients with persistent HPV16 infections and histologically confirmed high-grade lesions but only in a smaller subset of patients with cleared HPV16 infections and either normal cervical histology or low-grade CIN lesions. IMPLICATIONS: These results suggest that HPV16 VLP-specific antibodies are not responsible for the clearance of virally induced CIN lesions but that they might, in patients with persistent HPV16 infections, be indicative of an increased cervical cancer risk.  相似文献
