A method for the determination of hyaluronate in the presence of other glycosaminoglycans and its application to human intervertebral disc

The intrapleural air of a pneumothorax may largely collect medial to the anterior aspect of the lung in supine infants. The mechanical basis for this phenomenon is presented with supporting experimental evidence. This distribution of intrapleural air poses problems in recognition of the pneumothorax radiographically, in differentiation of the pneumothorax from pneumomediastinum, in estimation of the true volume of intrapleural air, and in the proper placement of drainage tubes. The importance of horizontal-beam lateral radiographs and of careful attention to the position of intrapleural tubes is emphasized, especially in supine, immobile newborns.     

Coronary occlusion site as a determinant of the cardiac rhythm effects of atropine and vagotomy

We have previously demonstrated that atropine pretreatment increases the incidence of fatal ventricular arrhythmias induced by left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD) occlusion. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether the deleterious effect of atropine also applies to arrhythmias induced by right coronary artery (RCA) occlsusion. Occlusion of the RCA resulted in ventricular arrhythmias in all 20 animals studied, followed by ventricular fibrillation in three animals (15 per cent). Right coronary occlusion also resulted in bradycardia (-30.3 +/- 5.1 beats per minute) and hypotension (-23.1 +/- 4.9 mm. Hg). Pretreatment of 15 animals with atropine caused no significant increase in the incidence of ventricular fibrillation (i.e., 20 per cent). In addition, atropine pretreatment had no effect on the fall in heart rate and hypotension associated with RCA ligation. Sectioning the vagus nerves produced results similar to atropine pretreatment with the exception that a significant portion of the bradycardia was prevented. These results indicate that the increase in deaths after atropine observed in animals undergoing experimental LAD occlusion in not demonstrated with RCA occlusion. The results also indicate that the potential for deleterious effects of atropine in acute infarction might depend on the anatomic location of the involved myocardium.     

A dose-response comparison between methadone and morphine self-administration

Rats were allowed to self-administer a solution of 0.9% saline, or 0.01, 0.03, 0.1 or 0.3 mg/kg/infusion of methadone hydrochloride or 0.03, 0.1 or 0.3 mg/kg/infusion of morphine sulfate. The results showed that number of infusions taken was an inverse function of unit dose, while amount of drug self-administered (mg/kg) was a direct function of unit dose. The data also indicated that more morphine than methadone was self-administered.     

Amacrine cells in Necturus retina: evidence for independent gamma-aminobutyric acid- and glycine-releasing neurons

About one-half of on-off ganglion cells have inhibitory postsynaptic potentials (IPSP's) which are blocked by strychnine, while the remainder have IPSP's which are blocked by picrotoxin or bicuculline. These antagonists do not abolish light activity of the presynaptic inhibitory neuron, the amacrine cell. The existence of separate gamma-aminobutyric acid- and glycine-releasing amacrine cells is implied by these results.     

Gas exchange and gas transport in rats during warming after deep immersion hypothermia

Gas exchange, oxygen transport and utilisation were shown to be limited at body temperature 17.5 degrees C in rats. Disturbances in the cardio-vascular system seem to be the main limiting factors telling on the above parameters in the course of spontaneous rewarming.     

Kinetic studies of Bacillus polymyxa nitrogenase

Nitrogenase from the facultative anaerobe Bacillus polymxa was separated into its component proteins, which were recombined in the ratio that produced optimal specific activity (125 to 175 nmol of C2H2 reduced/min per mg of total protein). The apparent Michaelis constants (Km)for the magnesium adenosine triphosphate complex, reducible substrates azide, acetylene, and N2 and the nonphysiological electron donor hydrosulfite (S2O42-) were determined to be 0.7, 0.7, 0.2, 0.06, and 0.03 MM, respectively. These apparent Km values are in reasonable agreement with those reported for the nitrogenases of Azotobacter vinelandii and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Either a total lack of cooperativity between binding sites or a single binding site for reducible substrates is indicated by analysis of Hill plots. Hill plot slopes of approximately 1.7 suggest that multiple binding sites exist for both ATP and S2O42-.
