The influence of tooling material, i.e., graphite and WC-Co, on the microstructure of a spark plasma sintering (SPS) consolidated, nanostructured aluminum alloy is studied in this paper. The results show that tooling selection influences microstructure evolution, independent of process parameters. The influence of tooling on microstructure is rationalized on the basis of the following factors: heating rate, electrical current density, localized heating, and imposed pressure. A theoretic framework, based on the physical properties of graphite and WC-Co, is formulated to explain the observed behavior.  相似文献

Angle-dispersive X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering measurements were carried out to follow the crystal-to-crystal transformation occurring in PbZr 0.52 Ti 0.48 O 3 ceramic powders with either increasing hydrostatic pressure or decreasing temperature. A low-temperature monoclinic phase was confirmed to exist below 298 K. External pressures of several GPa were found to fundamentally alter the structural and polar properties of PZT near the MPB and novel phase transitions were found to occur at close to 5GPa at 298 K, 7.5 GPa at 154 K and 9 GPa at 44 K. Whereas X-ray diffraction data indicated no deviation from the cubic symmetry above these pressures at each given temperatures, the unusually strong and persistent Raman signals, similar to relaxor-specific spectral signatures, indicated the presence of symmetry-breaking disorder in this phase. Based on these results, an updated version of the Pressure-Temperature phase diagram is proposed.  相似文献

Knowledge of the ocean dynamic topography, defined as the height of the sea surface above its rest-state (the geoid), would allow oceanographers to study the absolute circulation of the ocean and determine the associated geostrophic surface currents that help to regulate the Earth's climate. Here a novel approach to computing a mean dynamic topography (MDT), together with an error field, is presented for the northern North Atlantic. The method uses an ensemble of MDTs, each of which has been produced by the assimilation of hydrographic data into a numerical ocean model, to form a composite MDT, and uses the spread within the ensemble as a measure of the error on this MDT. The r.m.s. error for the composite MDT is 3.2 cm, and for the associated geostrophic currents the r.m.s. error is 2.5 cms(-1). Taylor diagrams are used to compare the composite MDT with several MDTs produced by a variety of alternative methods. Of these, the composite MDT is found to agree remarkably well with an MDT based on the GRACE geoid GGM01C. It is shown how the composite MDT and its error field are useful validation products against which other MDTs and their error fields can be compared.  相似文献

Resuspension of microbes in floor dust and subsequent inhalation by human occupants is an important source of human microbial exposure. Microbes in carpet dust grow at elevated levels of relative humidity, but rates of this growth are not well established, especially under changing conditions. The goal of this study was to model fungal growth in carpet dust based on indoor diurnal variations in relative humidity utilizing the time-of-wetness framework. A chamber study was conducted on carpet and dust collected from 19 homes in Ohio, USA and exposed to varying moisture conditions of 50%, 85%, and 100% relative humidity. Fungal growth followed the two activation regime model, while bacterial growth could not be evaluated using the framework. Collection site was a stronger driver of species composition (P = 0.001, R2 = 0.461) than moisture conditions (P = 0.001, R2 = 0.021). Maximum moisture condition was associated with species composition within some individual sites (P = 0.001-0.02, R2 = 0.1-0.33). Aspergillus, Penicillium, and Wallemia were common fungal genera found among samples at elevated moisture conditions. These findings can inform future studies of associations between dampness/mold in homes and health outcomes and allow for prediction of microbial growth in the indoor environment.  相似文献

The development of engineering students’ professional skills has gained considerable national attention from Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, the National Academy of Engineering, ASCE, and other constituents. There is little debate that these professional skills are necessary. Engineering programs have tried many approaches to develop these skills in the undergraduate programs. Colorado State University (CSU) has developed a new approach modeled on the type of professional development that occurs in the professional environment. This new Professional Learning Institute (PLI) provides students with a broad array of workshops, presentations, and experiential opportunities addressing the areas of cross cultural communication and teamwork, innovation, leadership, ethics, and public service. This program introduces students to the concept of professional development through required extracurricular activities, includes minimum requirements along with requirements to earn certificates in specialty areas for motivated students. The majority of offerings in the PLI are presented by leaders from the engineering profession who have teamed with CSU to provide high quality programs for our students.  相似文献

Instead, the author uses a selection of topics from various areas to illustrate this central theme: the influence of 3D graphics hardware on algorithm design. The authors present the effect of harmonics on reactive power measurements and offer a new method for calculating active, reactive apparent, and residual power in nonsinusoidal conditions. The method considers common and uncommon harmonic components of voltage and current waveforms. It properly defines all power components at different harmonic frequencies, such as rotating real power, quadrature power, and the residual power (distortion). Each component is calculated correctly at different frequencies to define its physical meaning. Many patients seeking rejuvenation of their foreheads have high hairlines and are troubled by the prospect that surgery will worsen the deformity. Hairline elevation occurs in both coronal and endoscopic foreheadplasty techniques and is at least part of the reason that many surgeons do not always recommend these procedures when otherwise indicated. Although a pretrichial "hairline" incision prevents hairline retro-displacement, it results in forehead shortening only and not true hairline lowering. When a pretrichial incision is used in combination with a posterior scalp advancement flap, however, true hairline lowering is possible. Experience with this technique encompasses 27 procedures performed over a 5-year period. Patients ranged in age from 35 to 71 years. A significant improvement was demonstrable in all cases and corresponded with a high degree of patient satisfaction. No serious complications were seen. A high hairline must be recognized as the source of both a disproportionate and aged appearance. The ability to lower the hairline and place it in a more proportionate, youthful relationship with the rest of the face adds a new dimension to foreheadplasty equal to or greater in importance to an overall improved appearance as other maneuvers typically performed during the procedure. For many patients, the benefits of hairline lowering far outweigh the trade-off of a more anteriorly situated, and possibly more visible, scar.  相似文献

Protein kinase C (PKC) acutely increases calcium currents in Aplysia bag cell neurons by recruiting calcium channels different from those constitutively active in the plasma membrane. To study the mechanism of PKC regulation we previously identified two calcium channel alpha1-subunits expressed in bag cell neurons. One of these, BC-alpha1A, is localized to vesicles concentrated primarily in somata and growth cones. We used antibodies to BC-alpha1A to analyze its expression in the bag cell neurons of juvenile Aplysia at a developmental stage at which PKC-sensitive calcium currents have previously been shown to be low. We find that vesicular BC-alpha1A staining is generally reduced in juvenile bag cell neurons but that its expression level can vary among juvenile animals. In 17 bag cell clusters examined, the percentage of neurons that displayed punctate alphaBC-alpha1A staining ranged from 0 to 85%. Sampling of calcium currents from cells of the same clusters by whole cell patch-clamp techniques revealed that the PKC-sensitive calcium current density is significantly correlated with the degree of vesicular staining. In contrast, no correlation of basal calcium current levels with aBC-alpha1A staining was found. These results strongly suggest that BC-alpha1A, a member of the ABE-subfamily of calcium channels, carries the PKC-sensitive calcium current in bag cell neurons. They are consistent with a model in which PKC recruits channels from the vesicular pool to the plasma membrane.  相似文献
