Covering a string

We consider the problem of finding the repetitive structures of a given stringx. The periodu of the stringx grasps the repetitiveness ofx, sincex is a prefix of a string constructed by concatenations ofu. We generalize the concept of repetitiveness as follows: A stringw covers a stringx if there is a superstring ofx which is constructed by concatenations and superpositions ofw. A substringw ofx is called aseed ofx ifw coversx. Bladder control a consequence of maturation: evidence after renal transplantation

An 84-year-old male presented to the emergency room with the chief complaint of painful, swollen penis following the use of a constriction ring to maintain penile erection. A high fever, chills and hypotension were recognized. Septic shock was presumed, and administration of antibiotics was started. Microbiologic cultures revealed Escherichia coli in blood. We herein report a rare but serious complication accompanying incarceration of the penis.     

Leukoregulin induction of protein expression in human orbital fibroblasts: evidence for anatomical site-restricted cytokine-target cell interactions

The molecular basis for the profound inflammatory response and the accumulation of hyaluronan in orbital connective tissues seen in thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy is unknown. Moreover, the link between the orbital manifestations of Graves' disease and those in the pretibial skin, localized dermopathy, has yet to be established. We have reported recently that leukoregulin, an activated T lymphocyte-derived cytokine, dramatically induces hyaluronan synthesis and prostaglandin-endoperoxide H synthase 2 in human orbital fibroblasts in culture. In the current studies, utilizing giant two-dimensional gel electrophoresis, we find that orbital fibroblasts express constitutively a protein profile that distinguishes them from skin fibroblasts derived from the abdominal wall and from the pretibium. We further demonstrate that leukoregulin, when present in culture medium for 16 hr, up-regulates a set of orbital fibroblast proteins not present in untreated cultures or in fibroblasts from the abdominal wall. However, some of the same protein inductions are present in the pretibial fibroblasts. These leukoregulin-induced changes in protein expression are completely blocked by dexamethasone (10 nM). Our findings are the first to identify proteins that appear to be expressed and differentially regulated in an anatomical site-restricted manner in orbital and pretibial fibroblasts and seem to establish a molecular link between fibroblasts from the orbit and those in pretibial skin.     

RANTES-induced T cell activation correlates with CD3 expression

The chemokine RANTES induces a unique biphasic cytoplasmic Ca2+ signal in T cells. The first phase of this signal, similar to that of other chemokines, is G-protein mediated and chemotaxis associated. The second phase of this signal, unique to RANTES and evident at concentrations greater than 100 nM, is tyrosine kinase linked and results in a spectrum of responses similar to those seen with antigenic stimulation of T cells. We show here that certain jurkat T cells responded to RANTES solely through this latter pathway. A direct correlation between the RANTES-induced second phase response and CD3 expression was demonstrated in these cells. Sorting the Jurkat cells into CD3(high) and CD3(low) populations revealed that only the CD3(high) cells were responsive to RANTES. Furthermore, stimulation of these Jurkat cells with anti-CD3 mAb significantly depresses their subsequent response to RANTES. While a RANTES-specific chemokine receptor is expressed at a low level on these Jurkat cells, the RANTES-induced activation is dependent on the presence of the TCR. Thus, stimulation through TCR may partially account for RANTES' unique pattern of signaling in T cells.     

The use of controlled-release oxycodone for the treatment of chronic cancer pain: a randomized, double-blind study

1. We have studied the effects of muscarinic cholinoceptor agonists and subtype-preferring antagonists on the isometric contraction of smooth muscle strips from dog prostate. 2. Acetylcholine and carbachol induced contraction of prostate strips from the peripheral zone, ('the capsule'). Bethanechol contracted the tissue but not at lower doses. McN-A-343 and oxotremorine-M showed the same effects. 3. Blocking alpha- and beta-adrenoceptors with phentolamine and propranolol, respectively, did not modify carbachol-induced contractions. 4. The nicotinic receptor blocker, hexamethonium (10(-6)-10(-4) M) did not affect the contractile response evoked by a single dose of carbachol (10(-5) M), whilst the muscarinic receptor antagonist, atropine (10(-11)-10(-9) M), inhibited it in a competitive manner. 5. The muscarinic M1 (pirenzepine), M2 [AF-DX 116, himbacine (M2/M4) and methoctramine], M3 (HHSID and f-F-HHSID), and putative M4 (tropicamide) antagonists reduced significantly the carbachol-induced contractions. The pIC50 values were: atropine (10.01) > himbacine (8.3) > methoctramine (7.85) > AF-DX 116 (7.60) > HHSID (7.21) > p-F-HHSID (7.10) > pirenzepine (7.30) > tropicamide (7.00). 6. The antagonist profile indicates that an predominant M2 receptor subtype could mediate the muscarinic contraction in the canine prostate.     

Activation of extracellular matrix metalloproteinases in equine laminitis

Samples of connective tissue obtained from the hoof of six laminitic and eight non-laminitic adult horses were analysed zymographically to investigate whether connective tissue matrix metalloproteinases are activated or induced during laminitis. The activity or matrix metalloproteinases was substantially greater in the tissues from the laminitic horses than in the tissues from the non-laminitic horses. A comparison of the collagenolytic activity in the laminitic and control tissues showed that collagenolytic activities corresponding to the 92 kDa (P < 0.001), 72 kDa (P < 0.01) and 66 kDa (P < 0.01) bands were induced in the laminitic tissues.     

Diagnosis and rehabilitation strategies for patients with hysterical hemiparesis: a report of four cases

BACKGROUND: Sulphidoleukotrienes (slt) are important mediators in allergic diseases that are synthesized after allergen-specific stimulation. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to determine in vitro slt production after allergen-specific (Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus) stimulus of peripheral blood leucocytes and to observe whether histamine release in whole blood with the same allergen correlates with slt production. We also wanted to evaluate whether a correlation exists between the release of slt and histamine and other diagnostic procedures as well as various clinical situations. METHODS: We studied 62 patients sensitive to Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (Der p), 30 atopic controls and 12 healthy donors. We determined slt production using the CAST-ELISA technique and histamine release using two concentrations of Der p extract (20 and 2 ng/mL). We also carried out quantification of specific and total IgE levels, skin tests and pulmonary function test on each patient. RESULTS: We observed a significantly increased slt release after in vitro stimulation with Der p. There was a significant difference in the slt release between controls and sensitive patients (P < 0.001) and between atopic controls and sensitive patients (P < 0.001). The data are similar to those obtained with histamine release. We noted a positive correlation (P < 0.001) between slt and histamine release (r = 0.71, at 2 ng/mL and r = 0.83 at 20 ng/mL). We also found a positive (P<0.001), although weak (r=0.4 with at 2ng/mL, and r = 0.34 with P = 0.003 at 20 ng/mL) correlation between slt release and specific IgE levels as well as between slt release and skin-test reactivity (r = 0.49 at 2 ng/mL and r = 0.45 at 20 ng/mL; P < 0.001). No significant correlation between slt release and asthma severity was observed, although a trend toward higher slt production in severe and moderate asthma was detected. We found a significant (P<0.001) but weak (r=-0.3) negative correlation between age and slt release. With respect to sex-related differences, we found significant differences (P < 0.05) in slt release between the sexes with a higher slt release in men than in women. CONCLUSION: We conclude that CAST-ELISA for quantification of slt production is a useful in vitro method for diagnosing sensitization to Der p. There also exists a close correlation between slt release and other parameters of allergic sensitization in vitro as well as in vivo.
