Mono-carboxylic, straight-chain fatty acids are present in extracts of lignite and subbituminous coal (0.4–1.0 wt%, daf basis), but not in those of a bituminous coal. They are removed with nearly equal ease by both solvent and supercritical gas (SCG) extraction. Octacosanoic acid is the major constituent, and values of the carbon preference index (even over odd) lie between 2 and 6. Solvent extraction of the coals also removes small quantities (< 0.08 wt%) of straight-chain alkanes which are closely related in composition to the straight-chain fatty acids and are probably derived from them during maturation. However, previous SCG extraction of the coals yielded much larger quantities of straight-chain alkanes (0.3–0.7 wt%). Pyrolysis experiments with a lignite fatty acid fraction and with tetracosanoic acid show that these acids largely survive SCG extraction and, therefore, are not the main source of the relatively large quantity of straight-chain alkanes in these extracts.  相似文献

The cathodic polarisation behaviour of CA 104 nickel aluminium bronze (NAB) has been examined in fully characterised seawaters (filtered and artificial) using the rotating disc electrode (RDE) and the rotating cylinder electrode (RCE). Linear sweep voltammetry and a potential step, current transient technique were used to examine the charge transfer and mass transfer controlled cathodic response as a function of both laminar and turbulent fluid flow. For freshly polished surfaces, the rate of irreversible charge transfer controlled oxygen reduction is controlled by the exchange of a single electron and hydrogen evolution is only significant at potentials more negative than approximately –1.0 V vs. the saturated calomel electrode (SCE).  相似文献

Lead technology is reviewed, beginning with the first known permanent implant and continuing through today's state-of-the-art implant. Nondislodging transvenous leads and epimyocardial leads (sutureless, screw-in leads) are described. Conductors, insulation, and electrodes are discussed. The emphasis today appears to be on improving carbon, screw-in, porous, platinized and steroid eluting electrodes, while future developments may include very thin bipolar leads, higher pacing impedance electrodes, and easier to implant and explant devices.  相似文献

Many patients seeking rejuvenation of their foreheads have high hairlines and are troubled by the prospect that surgery will worsen the deformity. Hairline elevation occurs in both coronal and endoscopic foreheadplasty techniques and is at least part of the reason that many surgeons do not always recommend these procedures when otherwise indicated. Although a pretrichial "hairline" incision prevents hairline retro-displacement, it results in forehead shortening only and not true hairline lowering. When a pretrichial incision is used in combination with a posterior scalp advancement flap, however, true hairline lowering is possible. Experience with this technique encompasses 27 procedures performed over a 5-year period. Patients ranged in age from 35 to 71 years. A significant improvement was demonstrable in all cases and corresponded with a high degree of patient satisfaction. No serious complications were seen. A high hairline must be recognized as the source of both a disproportionate and aged appearance. The ability to lower the hairline and place it in a more proportionate, youthful relationship with the rest of the face adds a new dimension to foreheadplasty equal to or greater in importance to an overall improved appearance as other maneuvers typically performed during the procedure. For many patients, the benefits of hairline lowering far outweigh the trade-off of a more anteriorly situated, and possibly more visible, scar.  相似文献

Protein kinase C (PKC) acutely increases calcium currents in Aplysia bag cell neurons by recruiting calcium channels different from those constitutively active in the plasma membrane. To study the mechanism of PKC regulation we previously identified two calcium channel alpha1-subunits expressed in bag cell neurons. One of these, BC-alpha1A, is localized to vesicles concentrated primarily in somata and growth cones. We used antibodies to BC-alpha1A to analyze its expression in the bag cell neurons of juvenile Aplysia at a developmental stage at which PKC-sensitive calcium currents have previously been shown to be low. We find that vesicular BC-alpha1A staining is generally reduced in juvenile bag cell neurons but that its expression level can vary among juvenile animals. In 17 bag cell clusters examined, the percentage of neurons that displayed punctate alphaBC-alpha1A staining ranged from 0 to 85%. Sampling of calcium currents from cells of the same clusters by whole cell patch-clamp techniques revealed that the PKC-sensitive calcium current density is significantly correlated with the degree of vesicular staining. In contrast, no correlation of basal calcium current levels with aBC-alpha1A staining was found. These results strongly suggest that BC-alpha1A, a member of the ABE-subfamily of calcium channels, carries the PKC-sensitive calcium current in bag cell neurons. They are consistent with a model in which PKC recruits channels from the vesicular pool to the plasma membrane.  相似文献

The prognosis in patients with primary brain tumors treated with surgery, radiotherapy and conventional chemotherapy remains poor. To improve outcome, combination high-dose chemotherapy (HDC) has been explored in children, but rarely in adults. This study was performed to determine the tolerability of three-drug combination high-dose thiotepa (T) and etoposide (E)-based regimens in pediatric and adult patients with high-risk or recurrent primary brain tumors. Thirty-one patients (13 children and 18 adults) with brain tumors were treated with high-dose chemotherapy: 19 with BCNU (B) and TE (BTE regimen), and 12 with carboplatin (C) and TE (CTE regimen). Patients received growth factors and hematopoietic support with marrow (n = 15), peripheral blood progenitor cells (PBPC) (n = 11) or both (n = 5). The 100 day toxic mortality rate was 3% (1/31). Grade III/IV toxicities included mucositis (58%), hepatitis (39%) and diarrhea (42%). Five patients had seizures and two had transient encephalopathy (23%). All patients had neutropenic fever and all pediatric patients required hyperalimentation. Median time to engraftment with absolute neutrophil count (ANC) >0.5 x 10(9)/l was 11 days (range 8-37 days). Time to ANC engraftment was significantly longer (P = 0.0001) in patients receiving marrow (median 14 days, range 10-37) than for PBPC (median 9.5 days, range 8-10). Platelet engraftment >50 x 10(9)/l was 24 days (range 14-53 days) in children. In adults, platelet engraftment >20 x 10(9)/l was 12 days (range 9-65 days). In 11 patients supported with PBPC, there was a significant inverse correlation between CD34+ dose and days to ANC (rho = -0.87, P = 0.009) and platelet engraftment (rho = -0.85, P = 0.005), with CD34+ dose predicting time to engraftment following HDC. Overall, 30% of evaluable patients (7/24) had a complete response (CR) (n = 3) or partial response (PR) (n = 4). Median time to tumor progression (TTP) was 7 months, with an overall median survival of 12 months. These TE-based BCNU or carboplatin three-drug combination HDC regimens are safe and tolerable with promising response rates in both children and older adults.  相似文献

An Escherichia coli O157:H7 subtyping method based on PCR amplification of variable DNA sequences between the repetitive element IS3 was developed. Template DNA was prepared by boiling cells in Chelex. Two separate IS3 PCR amplifications were performed for each isolate: one with a single primer (primer IS3A) and one with two primers (primers IS3A and IS3B). The IS3 PCR subtyping method was applied to 35 epidemiologically related and unrelated E. coli O157:H7 isolates that had been previously characterized by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). PFGE identified 25 different subtypes (difference of one or more bands). PCR with single primer IS3A and primer pair IS3A-IS3B identified 6 and 14 different subtypes, respectively. By combining the results of the two PCR amplifications, 15 different IS3 PCR subtypes were identified. While not as sensitive as PFGE, IS3 PCR subtyping grouped all outbreak-related isolates. IS3 PCR banding patterns were reproducible between amplifications and between subcultures. IS3 PCR could serve as a simple, rapid screening method for the identification of unrelated E. coli O157:H7 isolates.  相似文献
