In previous work, unequal error-protection techniques have been applied to improve the throughput of a wireless communication system in which a transmission is received by several radios with different capabilities. For instance, these capabilities may correspond to differences in path loss, fading, or interference. By taking advantage of the broadcast nature of the channel, additional messages for the more-capable receivers can be included on transmissions to the less-capable receivers at very little cost (in terms of required energy at the transmitter or error probabilities at the receivers). This technique has been termed simulcasting or multicast signaling. In this paper, we consider the use of these techniques in an ad hoc network. These techniques impact the link throughput, end-to-end throughput, and network connectivity. We investigate how the choice of parameters for the simulcasting technique affects these network performance metrics. The results indicate that a properly chosen simulcasting technique can improve the link and end-to-end throughput in wireless ad hoc networks with only a slight degradation in other metrics, such as network connectivity.  相似文献

An integrated starter/alternator (ISA) is normally designed to have high pole structure (10-14 poles) for high starting torque. However, its back electromotive force (EMF) at the peak revolutions per minute should be less than its battery voltage for the power flow control. For example, the back-EMF of a 12-pole ISA should be 42 V at 6000 r/min. These types of conflicting requirements lead to a nonclassical motor design that has extremely large field-weakening range (8:1/spl sim/10:1). In this paper, we are considering the use of an induction machine instead of a permanent synchronous machine. As an idea for solving the voltage limit problem, two inverters are utilized with an objective of sharing the required voltage. The secondary inverter only takes care of the reactive voltage component that grows very fast in high-speed operation. Therefore, an extra voltage source is not required for the secondary inverter. Only a capacitor bank suffices for the secondary inverter.  相似文献

The solutions of the Navier-Stokes equation for a Newtonian flow through a 4/1 contraction tube were obtained numerically using the Galerkin finite element method with the nine-node Lagrangian element which was believed to be one of the most accurate tools for mixed-type interpolating formulations. It was proved from this study that the vortex occurrence in the entrance corner region were confirmed but its size was gradually decreased with the increase of Reynolds numbers, and that the velocity profiles and pressure distributions along the applied mesh layers were in agreement with the experimental and the previously reported numerical results.  相似文献

It was reported that a nanocrystal ZnO had a thermal stabilizing effect for branched low‐density polyethylene (BLDPE). In this study, the thermal stabilizing effect of the nanocrystal ZnO was studied in more detail in comparison to a conventional, micron‐size ZnO using several polymers and a common antioxidant. The experimental results in this investigation suggest that the nanocrystal ZnO particles have different surface properties from micron‐size particles because of their extremely small size, and the particular surface properties are responsible for the thermal stabilizing effect. In the electroless plating process, to omit a sensitizing process with SnCl2, we utilized amino‐functional groups on polymer particles. At first, highly monodisperse functional polymer particles could be prepared by a two‐step seeded polymerization of styrene, divinylbenzene, and glycidyl methacrylate. Then, surface epoxy‐functional groups were converted to amino‐functional groups by treating the particles with a diamine. By using these surface amino functionalities, we tried to prepare uniformly metal‐coated monodisperse polymer particles by electroless plating method. The constituents of an electroless nickel solution bath are nickel salt, a reducing agent, suitable complexing agents, and stabilizers. And the metal thickness was simply controlled by changing the loading amount of substrate polymer particles. Morphological observation of nickel‐plated polymer particles was conducted by using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The structural composition of plated nickel was also investigated. Most of all, the function and the efficiency of the amino‐functional group of polymer particles as a polymeric ligand for metal binding was elucidated. From all observations, it was evident that in the electroless metal plating process without any sensitization step, the deposition of metal clusters on substrate particles is largely dependent upon the particle surface functionality. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Several studies have suggested that the glutathione/glutathione S-transferase (GSH/GST) system is involved in resistance of tumors toward ifosfamide and other cytostatic agents. Besides, ifosfamide metabolites (in vitro) as well as ifosfamide treatment (in vivo) have been shown to decrease cellular GSH availability. In the present study, the in vivo effects of three different ifosfamide treatment schedules on the GSH/GST system were studied in patients with advanced cancers (n = 24): continuous i.v. infusions of 1300 mg/m2 daily for 10 days and 5000 mg/m2/day for 24 h, as well as a 4-h infusion of 3000 mg/m2 daily for 3 days. The GSH/GST system was characterized by administering bromisoval, a probe drug to assess GSH conjugation activity in vivo, as well as by daily monitoring of GSH concentrations in blood cells and plasma. Bromisoval pharmacokinetics was assessed before and at the end of the ifosfamide treatment. Blood cell GSH levels decreased significantly (P < 0.05) during the 3- and 10-day ifosfamide treatment schedules; the 24-h treatment had no effect. The ifosfamide treatment schedules had only minimal effects on bromisoval pharmacokinetics. Assuming that the kinetics of the probe drug provide an accurate reflection of enzyme activity, this suggests that GST activity remains unchanged. Because GSH conjugation of bromisoval enantiomers requires both GST activity and GSH availability, these results also indicate that, despite the 35% decrease in GSH in blood cells of two patient groups, the GSH availability of the cancer patients was not rate-limiting for GSH conjugation of bromisoval enantiomers. If GSH levels in blood cells reflect those in tumors/other tissues, the present results indicate that ifosfamide may be used clinically to decrease GSH levels. However, whether a 35% decrease is sufficient to increase tumor sensitivity toward (other) cytostatics remains uncertain.  相似文献

The effects of AIDS-related diarrhea--with and without cryptosporidiosis and microsporidiosis--on intestinal function and injury were studied in 40 AIDS patients and 13 healthy volunteers from Fortaleza, Brazil. The differential urinary excretion of ingested lactulose and mannitol was used as a marker of barrier disruption and overall villous surface area. HIV-infected patients with diarrhea had a 2.8-fold higher lactulose to mannitol excretion ratio than HIV-positive patients without diarrhea and a 10.4-fold higher ratio than healthy volunteers. Moreover, those with crypotosporidial infection had a lactulose to mannitol ratio almost 6-fold greater than those without diarrhea and nearly 3-fold higher than those with non-cryptosporidial diarrhea. This effect involved both decreased mannitol excretion (decreased intestinal absorptive area) and increased lactulose excretion (mucosal barrier disruption). The single patient with microsporidial infection had a nearly 3-fold higher ratio than healthy volunteers. Alpha1-antitrypsin tests were positive in two of five (40%) HIV-positive patients with cryptosporidial infections compared with none of 12 HIV-infected patients with non-cryptosporidial diarrhea. These findings confirm that HIV infection is associated with profound intestinal dysfunction and injury, even in those without diarrhea. Disruption of the intestinal barrier is even greater, however, in HIV-infected patients with cryptosporidial diarrhea, with potential nutritional consequences.  相似文献

The use of absorbable suture material has a number of potential advantages when compared to nonabsorbable suture. We conducted a 5-year retrospective study of 102 patients with hand lacerations and compared the quality of scar formation and healing in these patients. Those patients who did not have tendon, nerve, or bone injury were included in the study. Lacerations were repaired with either 5-0 Vicryl or nylon. There were no reported complications or infections in any study group patient. The quality of scar, when compared visually and by palpation, was the same at the end of 6 months. In addition, there was no difference in the incidence of scar retraction. We conclude that the use of absorbable suture material is an acceptable alternative in the repair of hand lacerations.  相似文献

The effects of culture pH on the production, molecular weight distribution and the bioactivity of polysaccharides produced by Agaricus blazei were evaluated by four pH‐controlled batch cultures. As the culture pH of each batch was controlled from 4.0 to 7.0, the maximum polysaccharide concentration increased from 561 to 1252 mg dm?3, but the average molecular weight of the polysaccharides decreased monotonically from 1080 kDa to 600 kDa, the relative amount of β‐glucan from 56% to 33%, and the TNF‐α release by macrophage cells from 1440 to 760 pg per 5 × 104 cells. Polysaccharides with higher molecular weights, β‐glucan contents and bioactivities were obtained in the submerged cultures of Agaricus blazei at lower culture pH but with lower yields. We aimed to audit nosological inaccuracies in death certification in Northern Ireland and to compare performance of hospital doctors and general practitioners. Nosology is the branch of medicine which treats of the classification of disease. 1138 deaths were registered in Northern Ireland in a 4-week period commencing 3/10/94. 195 of these were either registered by HM Coroners (HMC) or required further investigation by their staff; these cases were excluded from the study. The remaining 943 were analysed for wording and formulation inaccuracies according to the revised notes (1974), Northern Ireland Medical Certificate of Cause of Death. These are issued in book form by the Registrar of Births and Deaths. The commonest inaccuracies in death certification occur in the areas of poor terminology, sequence errors and unqualified mode. One or more inaccuracies were found in 317 (33.6%) of cases. In 13 of these (4%) cases, the inaccuracies were serious enough to warrant referral by the Registrar of Deaths to HM Coroner. The numbers of general practitioners and hospital doctors were recorded, with general practitioners being responsible for 122 (38%) and hospital doctors being responsible for 195 (62%) of inaccuracies.  相似文献
