This article documents the construction and validation of a videotaped message to persuade middle school students to volunteer as the laboratory partner of a classmate who has AIDS. Based on well-established social-psychological models of persuasion, message arguments are designed either to reinforce or to downplay the modal salient beliefs held by message recipients about the intended behavior. The end-product of this precisely tailored, six-step process is instruction which not only promotes the adoption of tolerant and compassionate attitudes, but also provides an opportunity for the practice of essential life skills such as decision making and problem solving. The process itself is offered as a model for designing any instructional material which addresses today's growing list of AIDS-related issues having both moral and ethical implications. 相似文献

Extensive characterization of the vitronectin receptor (VNR), a member of the integrin group of cell adhesion molecules, which is abundantly expressed in osteoclasts, has revealed a role for this receptor in osteoclast adhesion as well as bone resorption. Earlier evidence from our laboratory suggests that VNR is also capable of transducing intracellular signals following receptor ligand interaction, although this function is poorly understood. Thus, addition of peptides containing the minimal tripeptide Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD) integrin recognition sequence elicits transient increases in intracellular free calcium ions, with maximal responses seen with a bone sialoprotein peptide, BSP-IIA. In the present study we have attempted to determine some of the structural requirements for calcium signaling in osteoclasts using derivatives of the peptide PRGDN/T sequence found in bone sialoprotein. While some peptides, such as the parent sequence PRGDN, can induce both signaling and retractile events, it was found that minor structural modifications yielded peptides such as PRADN which elicited a transient increase in intracellular free calcium ions without promoting a reduction in osteoclast spread area (retraction). Conversely, certain other modifications resulted in peptides, such as PrGDN and benzoyl-RGDN, which effect osteoclast retraction, while having minimal Ca2+ signaling capabilities. Osteoclast adhesion, and hence retraction, are known to be RGD-dependent and integrin-dependent events. However, intracellular Ca2+ signaling is RGD-independent and, based on lack of inhibition by an anti-beta 3 integrin antibody F11 and echistatin, very likely integrin-independent. These data suggest that signaling is not always via VNR and as yet unknown receptors on the osteoclast membrane play a role in osteoclast signaling and hence function. 相似文献

PURPOSE: The authors retrospectively analyzed changes in the retinal nerve fiber layer in patients with idiopathic intracranial hypertension and studied their relation to visual field loss to determine the clinical usefulness of retinal nerve fiber analysis in the clinical management of patients with papilledema. METHODS: Retinal nerve fiber layer photographs and visual fields from 36 eyes of 21 patients with papilledema due to idiopathic intracranial hypertension were analyzed for abnormalities in a masked fashion. RESULTS: Nerve fiber layer changes were found in 67% of eyes studied. Superior areas within the nerve fiber layer were affected 5.4 times more frequently than inferior regions. Visual field loss was more prevalent in eyes with diffuse nerve fiber layer loss (89%) than in eyes with slit defects (29%). The location of the nerve fiber layer changes correlated with corresponding areas of visual field loss. Nerve fiber layer changes were as common in mild to moderate as in atrophic papilledema; however, slit defects predominated in patients with mild to moderate papilledema, and diffuse loss predominated in atrophic papilledema. CONCLUSIONS: Changes in the retinal nerve fiber layer observed in patients with idiopathic intracranial hypertension provide objective information regarding the status of their optic nerve and may improve their clinical management. 相似文献

1. Pullets of 2 high-producing commercial stocks (both brown-egg layers) were exposed to 5 different lighting patterns between 18 and 72 weeks to test the hypothesis that photoperiods used in commercial lighting programmes early in the laying year may be unnecessarily long and, by accelerating the development of photorefractoriness, may contribute to the decline in egg production observed after the initial peak. Two rooms of 288 pullets were allocated to each treatment. 2. The rate of lay observed with a Step-Up treatment which gave increases in photoperiod from 8L:16D at 18 weeks to 15L:9D at 27 weeks of age was not significantly different from that of treatments which held the birds on 11L:13D during peak egg production but gave increments up to 15L:9D later in the laying year. 3. A control group maintained on 11L:13D from 20 to 72 weeks laid 295 eggs per bird housed and a further group held on 8L:16D from 0 to 72 weeks laid 284 eggs per bird. These yields were lower than the Step-Up treatment (299 eggs) but show the potential of modern hybrid stocks to lay prolifically even without light stimulation. 4. It is concluded that the stocks tested in this experiment showed no advantage when given lighting programmes in the first laying year which were designed to minimise the adverse effects of photorefractoriness. 相似文献
