Cocaine can cause a variety of neuropsychiatric and neurobehavioral complications; however, it is uncertain whether cocaine causes persistent cerebral structural and neurochemical abnormalities in asymptomatic users. We studied 52 African-American men (26 human immunodeficiency virus-negative asymptomatic heavy cocaine users and 26 normal subjects). Ventricle-to-brain ratio (VBR) and white matter lesions (WML) were quantified on magnetic resonance imaging. N-acetyl-containing compounds (NA), total creatine, choline-containing compounds, myo-inositol, and glutamate + glutamine were measured with in vivo proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy, VBR and WML were not significantly different in the cocaine users compared to the normal controls. Elevated creatine (+7%; p = .05) and myo-inositol (+18%; p = .01) in the white matter were associated with cocaine use. NA, primarily a measure of N-acetyl aspartate and neuronal content, was normal. Normal NA suggest no neuronal loss or damage in the brain regions examined in these cocaine users. Therefore, we conclude that neurochemical abnormalities observed might result from alterations in nonneuronal brain tissue.  相似文献

Durability of alkali-activated binders is of vital importance in their commercial application, and depends strongly on microstructure and pore network characteristics. X-ray microtomography (μCT) offers, for the first time, direct insight into microstructural and pore structure characteristics in three dimensions. Here, μCT is performed on a set of sodium metasilicate-activated fly ash/slag blends, using a synchrotron beamline instrument. Segmentation of the samples into pore and solid regions is then conducted, and pore tortuosity is calculated by a random walker method. Segmented porosity and diffusion tortuosity are correlated, and vary as a function of slag content (slag addition reduces porosity and increases tortuosity), and sample age (extended curing gives lower porosity and higher tortuosity). This is particularly notable for samples with ≥ 50% slag content, where a space-filling calcium (alumino)silicate hydrate gel provides porosity reductions which are not observed for the sodium aluminosilicate (‘geopolymer’) gels which do not chemically bind water of hydration.  相似文献

Seventy two consecutive patients without a history of diabetes and normal fasting plasma glucose were included in this study of insulin levels. Standard oral glucose tolerance test with 75 gm glucose and fasting and two hour insulin levels were estimated in all patients. Coronary artery disease (CAD) was confirmed or excluded by selective coronary arteriography. In 20 patients, CAD was diagnosed by electrocardiographic (ECG) and clinical evidence of earlier myocardial infarction. Mean fasting plasma insulin was 31.40 +/- 22.2 IU/dl in the CAD positive and 32.3 +/- 13.6 IU/dl in the CAD negative group. The mean two hour plasma insulin was 274.6 +/- 301.1 IU/dl in the CAD positive and 104.8 +/- 74.9 IU/dl in the CAD negative group (p < 0.04). Two hour plasma insulin levels were significantly higher in patients with atherosclerotic coronary artery disease. It is concluded that the estimation of a two hour plasma insulin level after 75 gm of glucose load, could help differentiate CAD from normals.  相似文献

Design of mechanical agitators for solids suspension under gassed conditions can be achieved using a constant ungassed torque criterion if the solids suspension task is more difficult than the gas dispersion task. When gas dispersion is the more difficult task, design for complete gas dispersion will ensure solids suspension. The ST-16 antigenic specificity of the HLA-B locus is defined as a B39 variant of Mexican-Americans. Nucleotide sequencing of cDNA shows the ST-16 allele (B*3905) differs from B*39011 by a single substitution that substitutes tyrosine for aspartic acid at position 74 of the mature class I heavy chain. The complete coding region sequence for the common caucasoid allele encoding the B38 antigen has been determined. This B*3801 allele differs from B*3802 at two nucleotide substitutions within the Bw4 sequence motif. B*3801 and B*3802 may have been derived independently from B*39011 by conversion events with B alleles donating distinctive Bw4 motifs. A novel allele B*39022 derived from a Colombian Indian differs from the B*39021 allele of Japanese origin at two widely separated silent substitutions. Comparison of sequences for the known B16 alleles suggest that B*39021 and B*39022 were independently derived by recombination from B*39013 and B*39011 respectively.  相似文献

Normal women produce small amounts of active androgens. When androgen levels are elevated, such as for example in the polycystic ovary syndrome, this is followed by the development of male physical characteristics and muscle mass, structure and function as well as android adipose tissue distribution and function. Psychological features and stress reactions also seem similar to those of men. Such women have an increased risk of developing hypertension, non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease. Recent data have shown that these physical, and psychological characteristics, as well as risk of ill health, are also found in the population of women selected at random. Women in the lowest quintiles of levels of sex-hormone-binding globulin--an indicator inversely related to active androgens--are at risk of developing hypertension, non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular mortality. The mechanism probably includes muscular insulin resistance, following a relative androgen excess. It is thus apparent that androgens, even within the highest levels of the nonselected population of women, are powerful predictors of serious disease development. The population at risk might be as large as about 20% of middle-aged women. This is an area of female disease risk which requires more attention in screening and intervention procedures.  相似文献
