Scanning electron microscopy and x-ray microanalysis were used to investigate microleakage, two incidences of loss of coating integrity, filiform corrosion, and sulfide black corrosion in enamel-lined metal food containers. Microleakage developed in a canned cheese sauce at the side seam weld and was traced to a hot weld and a cold weld defect. An enamel-blistering problem developed in an aseptically processed milk-based product when the tinplate was heated above its melting point; the tin melted under the enamel coating, causing the blistering. An enamel-blistering problem, due to silicon contamination of the metal surface prior to enameling, developed on the bottom of a two-piece can that contained a chicken-based product. A sulfide black problem developed in canned clams, caused by scratches in the coating that were introduced during can manufacturing. A filiform corrosion problem developed on the outside of the easy score line of enameled tinplate lids with a light tin coating 0.08 microns thick. 相似文献

Abstract— Aviation increasingly conducts night operations using night‐vision devices. However, design of some aspects may limit performance. As pointed out by Kotulak, vergence/accommodation mismatch in NVDs, usually due to eyepiece focus misadjustments, is sometimes a source of visual acuity (VA) decrement. The increased separation between sensors, existing in some binocular helmetmounted displays, was also identified to be potentially responsible for decreased VA at short distances. Based upon knowledge pertaining to vergence and accommodation, a study was performed to better understand the problem of dissociation accommodation/convergence. Different conditions of interocular separation and viewing distances were used. Twelve subjects participated and were asked to resolve Landolt C charts using night‐vision goggles. The results show that, with the eyepiece focus fixed at 10 m, the decrease in VA is roughly proportional to the interocular separation, when looking at short distances. A fixed eyepiece focus at 4 m considerably reduces the conflict and results in improved VA. An additional experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of fixing the objective lenses focus at infinity. With this setting, the decrease in VA at a short distance was such that effects of the mismatch accommodation/convergence are no longer apparent regardless of the interocular separation. 相似文献

The luminal surface of mouse urothelium in contact with the urine is almost entirely covered with plaques consisting of uroplakin-containing particles that form p6 hexagonal crystals with a center-to-center distance of 16 nm. A combination of quick-freeze/deep-etch images and our previous negative staining data indicate that the head domain of the uroplakin particle, which is exposed without an extensive glycocalyx shield, interacts closely with the head domains of the neighboring particles, while the membrane-embedded tail domains are farther apart; and that urothelial particles and plaques are not rigid structures as they can change their configuration in response to mechanical perturbations. Based on these data, we have constructed three-dimensional models depicting the structural organization of urothelial particles and plaques. Our models suggest that the head-to-head interaction may play a key role in determining the shape and size of the urothelial plaques. These models can explain many properties of urothelial plaques including their unique shape, detergent-insolubility, and morphological changes during vesicle maturation. 相似文献

We have investigated the effect of the anticancer compound, camptothecin on Jurkat T-cells, a lymphoblastoid leukemic cell-line. Exposure to low concentrations led to rapid cessation of DNA (more than 95%) and RNA (more than 75%) synthesis. Perturbations to the cell cycle were observed following exposure which caused a significant accumulation of cells within G1 (P = 0.03) with a concomitant decrease in G2/M (P = 0.025). Concentrations below 0.1 microM could inhibit DNA synthesis but not induce apoptosis. Induction of apoptosis was dose dependent and could be detected as early as 3 h post exposure. The apoptotic population appeared to be derived from G1 and S-phase cells but not G2/M, coinciding with the cell cycle compartments in which DNA and RNA polymerases function. However, direct inhibition of DNA polymerase alone was not shown to be associated the induction of apoptosis or with a decrease in susceptibility to camptothecin-induced cell death. The effects of camptothecin on Jurkat T-cells and the potential mechanisms involved are discussed in the context of observations made in other transformed cell lines. 相似文献

Most patients in acute myocardial infarction (AMI) undergo emergent coronary angiography (CAG). However, when to analyze lipoprotein profiles in AMI is not clear. To determine whether lipoprotein profiles change during catheterization, we measured serum lipid and apolipoprotein concentrations in 65 patients (51 men and 14 women) before and after catheterization. Heparin was injected at 50 units/kg for CAG and 200 units/kg for percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA). We found that cholesterol and triglyceride decreased by 9.4% (P < 0.001) and 53.1% (P < 0.001), respectively, after catheterization. Apolipoproteins also decreased significantly. Variables decreased two to five times more after PTCA than after CAG. Lipoprotein lipase mass was higher after PTCA (267.8 +/- 135.3 micrograms/L) than after CAG (93.3 +/- 48.4 micrograms/L; P < 0.05). In conclusion, lipoprotein profiles change during catheterization. We recommend avoiding analysis of lipoprotein profiles after emergent CAG in AMI. 相似文献
