Examined the occurrence of individual behavioral differences in wolf cubs and the stability of the differences over the 1st 6 mo of life despite variations in the social environment. A litter of 5 male wolves was tested for reaction to unfamiliar people and unfamiliar objects and in a bone competition situation. The social environment was varied by housing the Ss alternately as a group, in pairs, and in isolation. Although there was a general tendency for less stability to be shown prior to 6 wks of age than after, the behaviors showed high stability over the course of the experiment. Results from the tests with unfamiliar objects indicate less stability when Ss were tested individually than when tested as a group, an effect suggesting that social structure may be a factor that increases the stability of responses to unfamiliar objects. A typical desktop LCD projector was characterised. Having determined the optimum settings of the brightness and contrast controls, measurements were made with a spectroradiometer to establish the additivity of the primaries, inter-channel dependence, colour gamut, tone scale, contrast, spatial non-uniformity, temporal stability and viewing angle variation. Four mathematical models were compared for their accuracy in predicting the colours generated by the display for arbitrary signal inputs. A new model was developed for the S-shaped electro-optical transfer function of the LCD device, and was extended to predict the anomalous colour tracking of the primaries.  相似文献

Canada is considering the development of a new standard for infant/child life jackets. Eight currently available (approved and non-approved) infant/child life jackets were procured for evaluation. Fifty-six participants were chosen as a sample of convenience from the general public for testing. The life jackets were divided into two groups of four, which were donned on a soft infant manikin procured from the Red Cross. In 224 attempts at donning, only 43 (19%) attempts resulted in the life jacket being donned correctly in less than 1 min. Only one life jacket came close to a good design and passed the life jacket standard for donning time and accuracy. Failure rates were observed across all the participants irrespective of age, gender, experience with children and experience with recreational marine equipment. Accuracy and speed of donning the life jacket were hampered as the number of donning sub-tasks increased. It was concluded that it is possible to design a life jacket that can be donned correctly in under 1 min. The life jacket must be of simple, intuitive design and fall naturally into the anatomical shape of the child. A minimum number of ties, zips and clips should be used in the design, and if such connectors are used they should be color coded or of different shapes and sizes to avoid confusion.  相似文献

Ergonomists need easy-to-use, quantitative job evaluation methods to assess risk factors for upper extremity work-related musculoskeletal disorders in field-based epidemiology studies. One device that may provide an objective measure of exposure to arm acceleration is a wrist-worn accelerometer or activity monitor. A field trial was conducted to evaluate the performance of a single-axis accelerometer using an industrial population (n=158) known to have diverse upper limb motion characteristics. The second phase of the field trial involved an examination of the relationship between more traditional observation-based ergonomic exposure measures and the monitor output among a group of assembly-line production employees (n=48) performing work tasks with highly stereotypic upper limb motion patterns. As expected, the linear acceleration data obtained from the activity monitor showed statistically significant differences between three occupational groups known observationally to have different upper limb motion requirements. Among the assembly-line production employees who performed different short-cycle assembly work tasks, statistically significant differences were also observed. Several observation-based ergonomic exposure measures were found to explain differences in the acceleration measure among the production employees who performed different jobs: hand and arm motion speed, use of the hand as a hammer, and, negatively, resisting forearm rotation from the torque of a power tool. The activity monitors were found to be easy to use and non-intrusive, and to be able to distinguish arm acceleration among groups with diverse upper limb motion characteristics as well as between different assembly job tasks where arm monitors were performed repeatedly at a fixed rate.  相似文献

Abstract

The focus of this paper is an examination of mentorship relationships developed as a result of six students’ participation in a local community science centre sponsored through an NSERC/CRYSTAL project. Each year, a number of students participate in after‐school activities sponsored by the community science centre. Much of this work involves a one‐to‐one approach, with a middle years or high school student working with a professor partner. The professor acts as a mentor to the student, facilitating learning in a manner not always feasible within a school setting with large class sizes. For some students this research may be the basis of a science fair project; for others if is simply a study based on individual interest. Mentored students were interviewed about the nature of that mentorship, with the goal of describing the experience from the students’ perspective. Questions focused on the student's experience of working with a mentor, including how the mentorship relationship was formed, what the importance of the voluntary nature of mentoring was, what the benefits and challenges of working with a mentor were, how the mentorship relationship affected the level of content knowledge the student gained, and what effect the mentoring relationship had on the student's continuing interest in science. The mentorship program offers students the opportunity to work within a developing community of practice.  相似文献

Measurements of critical currents using a four-point direct current (dc) method and an alternating magnetic field method have been performed on several superconducting YBa2Cu3O7 ceramics at 77 K. In the presence of a constant magnetic field, the critical currents obtained with the alternating field method are several orders of magnitude larger than the critical currents measured by the dc method. Also, we observed a minimum in the dc critical current as a function of applied transverse magnetic field. Several authors have suggested that these ceramics behave as individual superconducting grains coupled by Josephson junctions. In this paper, we explain the two observations above using that model.  相似文献

In this paper, we review an extension of the learning rules in a Principal Component Analysis network which has been derived to be optimal for a specific probability density function. We note that this probability density function is one of a family of pdfs and investigate the learning rules formed in order to be optimal for several members of this family. We show that, whereas we have previously (Lai et al., 2000; Fyfe and MacDonald, 2002) viewed the single member of the family as an extension of PCA, it is more appropriate to view the whole family of learning rules as methods of performing Exploratory Projection Pursuit. We illustrate this on both artificial and real data sets.  相似文献

Fabrication of submicron high-aspect-ratio GaAs actuators   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Submicron, single-crystal gallium arsenide (SC-GaAs) actuators have been designed, fabricated, and operated. The fabrication process, called SCREAM-II (single crystal reactive etching and metallization II), uses chemically assisted ion beam etching (CAIBE) and reactive ion etching (RIE) to produce suspended and movable SC-GaAs structures with up to a 25:1 aspect ratio of vertical depth (10 μm) to lateral width (400 nm). Integrated actuators with predominantly vertical sidewall (PVS) aluminum electrodes are used to move the structures. Silicon nitride is used as an etch mask, structural stiffener, and electrical insulator. An x-y stage with integrated actuators produces controllable x-y displacements of ±1.8 μm when a voltage of 54.5 V is applied to either or both of the x and y actuators. The x-y stage resonates for an applied sinewave of 20 V (peak to peak) with f=10.5 kHz and a DC offset of 10 V. The structural vibration amplitude is 0.6 μm  相似文献
