The incidence of solitary pulmonary metastasis from carcinoma of the large intestine

Two hundred and two consecutive patients who underwent resection of an adenocarcinoma of the colon or rectum from January 1958 to December 1972 were evaluated for the development of a metastatic tumor in the lungs. In the 185 patients who survived the 30 day postoperative period, 30 malignant pulmonary lesions were subsequently recognized. Six of these were a solitary lesion and 24 were multiple lesions. Three of these malignant lesions were proved to be other than metastatic disease. Metastatic adenocarcinoma from the colon or rectum was proved to be present in 27 patients, an incidence of 14.5 per cent. Only four of these lesions were solitary, 14.8 per cent of the metastatic pulmonary lesions. The solitary metastatic tumors represented an incidence of 2.1 per cent in this patient population, but long term tumor-free survival was possible with appropriate pulmonary resection of the metastatic disease. It is suggested that periodic roentgenographic examination of the chest, every four to six months, be an integral part of the postoperative follow-up study carried out on these patients.     

Pharmacokinetics of indoramin in man

Bacterial luciferase from Photobacterium phosohoreum was found to produce bioluminescence on reaction with FMN and H2O2 in the presence of aldehyde. This luminescence is presumably produced by the same X1 intermediate as that found in FMNH2-O2 initiated luminescence. From the ratio of the light intensities of the FMN-H2O2 initiated reactions, we calculated the association constant of the reaction, luciferase+FMN+H2O2in equilibriumX1, and estimated its temperature dependence. From these results we calculated the thermodynamic parameters of the reaction, luciferase+FMNH2+O2in equilibriumX1. We found that the free energy level of X1 is only 3.2 kcal below that of fr-e FMN and H2O2. We also estimated the thermodynamic parameters of other steps of the luminescent reaction. The values obtained showed that the formation of X1 from luciferase, FMNH2 and O2 involves a positive entropy change, but the intermediate is in a state stabilized against decomposition. Results also suggest a considerable degree of electronic rearrangement on formation of the excited-state molecule from the X1-aldehyde complex.     

The effect of photon irradiation on blood-brain barrier permeability to methotrexate in mice

Methotrexate was administered by intraperitoneal injection (100 mg/kg) to unirradiated mice, and to mice receiving varying doses of cranial irradiation. The animals were sacrificed 24 hours after injection, and methotrexate assays were performed on brain tissue. No methotrexate was detected in the brains of the unirradiated animals. Detectable levels of methotrexate were present after 2000 rad cranial irradiation, but not after 500 rad, 1000 rad, or 1500 rad. The implications of these findings are discussed.     

Pine oil toxicity in the horse: drug detection, residues and pathological changes

Histochemical activity of hydroxysteroid dehydrogenases as well as alkaline and acid phosphatase was investigated in porcine granulosa cells cultured in vitro. Granulosa cells, isolated from preovulatory procine ovarian follicles, during in vitro culture showed activity of enzymes participating in steroid biosynthesis. High activity of delta53betta0H-SDH and G6P-DH as well as the activity of alkaline phosphatase, appearing in the course of culture, could be evidence of progressive luteinization of the cells. Activity of 17beta0H-SDH was lower and exhibited strong fluctuations, similarly low was 20xOH-SDH. Gonadotropic hormones caused the increase of synthesis and accumulation of intracellular lipids. They stimulated alkaline and acid phosphatase, and also the activity of the dehydrogenases. LH had the most visible effect. Estradiol stimulated the activity of acid but not alkaline phosphatase and was not influencing, even lowering the activity of dehydrogenases.
