Drawing K2,n: A lower bound

We give a tradeoff theorem between the area and the aspect ratio required by any planar straight-line drawing of K_2,n on the integer lattice. In particular we show that if the drawing is contained in a rectangle of area O(n) then the rectangle must have aspect ratio , and conversely, if the aspect ratio is O(1) then the area must be .

Describes an experiment designed to test hypotheses formulated by J. I. Lacey (1967) about the role of heart rate during interactions of organism and environment. 18 9-12-mo-old children were exposed to a standardized confrontation with a stranger. Their reactions to the stranger's approach were classified as accepting or rejecting. Lacey's hypotheses were confirmed in part only. The heart rates of the accepting Ss differed from the heart rates of the rejecting Ss, the difference became greater as the stranger came closer. Effects of IQ and mental age on hypothesis testing in normal and retarded children: A methodological analysis.

Assessed the effects of 2 kinds of blank-trial probes for hypotheses upon performance of 200 normal and retarded children of MA levels 5? and 7?. One kind of probe incorporated position-oriented response sets as legitimate hypotheses; the other measured response sets and hypotheses independently. The probe that incorporated response sets was shown to mask developmental differences and lead to erroneous conclusions. MA produced several effects upon performance, but IQ did not. The film Thelma & Louise (1991) has often been criticized for presenting women with negative role models. This criticism takes the film too literally, failing to recognize how Thelma & Louise, as film fantasy, effects more complex psychological experiences of gender construction. Counseling center hiring preferences.

In Study 1, 130 counseling center directors rated a counseling vita significantly higher in terms of agency fit and a clinical vita significantly higher in terms of the likelihood of being licensed. In Study 2, the American Psychological Association Monitor position advertisements for the years 1978 to 1984 were classified as clinical, counseling, or either. A high percentage of advertisements sought either a clinical or counseling psychologist, with counseling psychologists being more frequently sought than clinical psychologists when the advertisement was directed at a single discipline category. Fear of strangers: A developmental milestone or an overstudied phenomenon?

Two female Es and 1 male E individually made a home visit to each of 30 male and 30 female infants representing 8-, 10-, and 12-mo age groups; visits for each S occurred within a 10-day period. Recordings of Ss' visual, motor, and vocal behavior and facial expressions were used to determine a general response score (an affect category and intensity score) for each visit. In order for Ss' responses to strangers to be considered stable, the S had to receive the same category score at each of the 3 visits and behavior leading to this score had to be similar at each visit. Findings indicate that a significant number of Ss were stable in their responses to strangers; however, only positive responses were stable. Results question the assumption in developmental literature that a child's response to a stranger remains constant for a particular period; a re-evaluation of accepted guideposts of infant social and emotional development is indicated. Quantitative proteomic analysis by accurate mass retention time pairs

Current methodologies for protein quantitation include 2-dimensional gel electrophoresis techniques, metabolic labeling, and stable isotope labeling methods to name only a few. The current literature illustrates both pros and cons for each of the previously mentioned methodologies. Keeping with the teachings of William of Ockham, "with all things being equal the simplest solution tends to be correct", a simple LC/MS based methodology is presented that allows relative changes in abundance of proteins in highly complex mixtures to be determined. Utilizing a reproducible chromatographic separations system along with the high mass resolution and mass accuracy of an orthogonal time-of-flight mass spectrometer, the quantitative comparison of tens of thousands of ions emanating from identically prepared control and experimental samples can be made. Using this configuration, we can determine the change in relative abundance of a small number of ions between the two conditions solely by accurate mass and retention time. Employing standard operating procedures for both sample preparation and ESI-mass spectrometry, one typically obtains under 5 ppm mass precision and quantitative variations between 10 and 15%. The principal focus of this paper will demonstrate the quantitative aspects of the methodology and continue with a discussion of the associated, complementary qualitative capabilities.     

Cathodic reduction of different metal salt solutions Part I: synthesis of metal hydroxides by electrogeneration of base

The yield of metal hydroxides obtained by electrolysis of chloride baths is greater than the yield obtained from nitrate baths showing that the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) contributes as much to electrogeneration of base as the nitrate reduction reaction. This observation has implications for the fabrication of nickel hydroxide positive electrodes for alkaline secondary cells, and widens the scope of electrosynthesis to include chloride, sulphate and other anion containing -nickel hydroxides and other layered hydroxides. Electrosynthesis of Mg(OH)2 has been investigated as a model synthesis.
