In previous studies (e.g, R. A. Yeo et al; see record 1993-40422-001), both left-handers and extreme right-handers showed evidence of increased developmental instability, as indexed by minor physical anomalies and by specific fluctuating anatomic asymmetries. Thus, developmental instability may be an important factor affecting handedness. In the present study, a specific prediction of the developmental instability model of handedness, one that distinguishes it from the single-gene models of M. Annett (1985) and I. C. McManus (see record 1986-21280-001), was tested among 225 undergraduates. The model suggests that the degree of deviation from modal handedness, rather than direction of handedness, is heritable. Thus, it was hypothesized that extreme right-handers as well as left-handers have an elevated proportion of left-handed parents. Results supported this hypothesis. We have defined a 160-nucleotide region, Mpsi, from the 5' leader region of the Rous sarcoma virus genome that is sufficient to direct the packaging of a heterologous RNA. Mpsi contains the putative O3 stem structure that has previously been shown, and that has been confirmed in this study, to be important for the efficient packaging of avian leukosis-sarcoma virus RNA. Analyses of several O3 stem mutants revealed that other regions within Mpsi can interfere with the proper folding of altered sequences which are predicted to form a wild-type O3 stem.  相似文献

The expression of cellular retinoic-acid-binding protein (CRABP) and cellular retinol-binding protein (CRBP), as well as their relationship to retinoic acid (RA) synthesis and degradation were examined in the developing mouse cerebellum and choroid plexus of the fourth ventricle. The choroid plexus, which expresses the RA-synthesizing retinaldehyde dehydrogenase RALDH-2, is likely to represent a diffusion source of RA for the closely apposed cerebellum, regulating its development. We found CRBP to be expressed in the choroid plexus and, in an in-vitro assay, addition of recombinant CRBP to RALDH-2 increased RA synthesis from retinaldehyde, with the amount of increase depending on the CRBP/retinaldehyde ratio. A technique that characterizes RA-binding proteins according to their isoelectric point showed both CRABP I and CRABP II to be present in the cerebellum and P19 cells, and only CRABP II to be present in the choroid plexus. With this technique, CRABP I could also be detected in the HL60 cell line. In addition to the two known acidic RA-binding proteins CRABP I and II, the cerebellum expressed a third RA-binding protein distinguishable by its neutral isoelectric point; the same binding protein was also detected in the olfactory bulb, kidney and testes. We used the RA-binding technique to follow the rate of elimination of bound RA from the cerebellum. A systemic injection of 0.3 micromols RA into postnatal day-1 mice was almost completely removed after 8 hours. These results suggest mechanisms by which the retinoid-binding protein may regulate the equilibrium of RA synthesis and catabolism in the cerebellum and choroid plexus.  相似文献

The power consumption and operating frequency of the extended true single-phase clock (E-TSPC)-based frequency divider is investigated. The short-circuit power and the switching power in the E-TSPC-based divider are calculated and simulated. A low-power divide-by-2/3 unit of a prescaler is proposed and implemented using a CMOS technology. Compared with the existing design, a 25% reduction of power consumption is achieved. A divide-by-8/9 dual-modulus prescaler implemented with this divide-by-2/3 unit using a 0.18-mum CMOS process is capable of operating up to 4 GHz with a low-power consumption. Rifamycin oxidase of Curvularia lunata was immobilized on alginate gel. The pH and temperature optima of the immobilized enzyme preparation were 6.5 and 50 degrees C, respectively. Transformation reaction was carried out with the immobilized enzyme preparation. It took 8 h for the complete transformation of rifamycin B (10 g/L) to rifamycin S. The immobilized enzyme preparation was found to be mechanically weak even in the presence of CaCl2 in the reaction mixture. Reusability studies showed that the catalyst can not be repeatedly used very effectively.  相似文献

Homocystinuria is a rare inherited metabolic disease. Arterial and venous thromboembolic events represent frequent and life-threatening complications in homocystinuric patients. It has been suggested that mild homocysteinemia could be a risk factor for vascular disease. We have therefore measured total plasma homocysteine (HCy) concentrations by radioisotopic assay in 50 subjects with venous or arterial thrombosis and studied the relationship between HCy, coagulation and fibrinolytic parameters. Values were considered abnormal if they were higher than 2.7 standard deviations (SD) above the mean, i.e., 14.1 mmol/l. Thus, eighteen of the 50 patients with thrombosis were classified in the hyperhomocysteinemia group. Nine of these subjects had only this isolated risk factor. No correlations were found between HCy and antithrombin III, protein C, protein S and plasminogen levels, or plasma plasminogen activator inhibitor activity. Nevertheless, the correlation between tissue-plasminogen activator antigen and total plasma HCy was significant (r = 0.61, p < 0.001). Increased homocysteinemia seems to be a risk factor for thrombotic events especially knowing that HCy presents a direct cytotoxic effect. Vitamin therapy, already used in homozygote homocystinuric patients, might be beneficial in the prevention of thromboembolic disease in heterozygous patients.  相似文献

The rubber elasticity characteristics of poly(n-butyl acrylate) networks crosslinked with tetrafunctional (EGDM and TEGDM), hexafunctional (TMPTM), and octafunctional (PETMA) vinyl crosslinkers were investigated. Both gel—sol analyses and crosslinking efficiency theories were used to evaluate the chemical crosslink contribution vc and the entanglement contribution vp to the elastically effective network chains ve, and the effect of the crosslink junction functionality f on the front factor g. The front factors obtained were in the range of 0.50–0.92, depending upon the network system and the counting method for vc. The relationship of g = [(f ? 2)/f]/〈r2〉/〈r2o seems reasonable in the case of the tetrafunctional and hexafunctional networks, but deviates in the case of the octafunctional network. It is also evident that the functionality scheme for the front factor could only be valid under the postulate of a high vp, which increases with increasing vc, especially in the high vc region near the Gaussian limit. The average energetic contribution to the retractive force of the present systems, expressed as Fe/F, is ?0.30 ± 0.1.  相似文献
