Aim: The aim was to prove the significance of air velocity and turbulence intensity on the responses to drafts and if air velocity is adequately weighted in the draft rating model (DR-model) proposed in ISO 7730 (1994). Methods: Seventeen healthy persons (9 women, 8 men, 19–51 yr) took part in 12 randomly arranged 1-h sessions where horizontal drafts were directed towards the dorsolateral body sites of the sedentary persons. Mean air velocity was varied in 4 (
m/s) and turbulence intensity in 3 steps (Tu: <30,≈50,>70%) but were kept constant during the single sessions, whereas air velocities were increased every 15 min in the basic experiments performed for the DR-model. Air temperature was 23°C, humidity varied between 40% and 60%. Subjective perception and annoyance due to drafts were registered every 5 min using a list of prescribed body parts and skin temperature was measured continuously throughout the sessions at the forearm and at the neck. Results: Draft-induced general annoyance (if draft-induced annoyance was stated for at least one body site) and draft-induced local annoyance as stated for the neck and for the forearm increased with air velocity and/or with turbulence intensity. The decrease in skin temperature, however, was only related to air velocity but not to turbulence intensity. Air velocities are obviously not accurately weighted in the draft-rating model (ISO 7730, 1994). As compared to the effects observed here, the effects predicted with the DR-model were smaller in case of mean air velocities of 0.3 m/s and less but greater for 0.4 m/s. Concerning rather sedentary persons it seems that drafts are tolerable as long as mean air velocities do not exceed 0.2 m/s and as long as turbulence intensity remains below 30% in air temperature of 23°C.
Relevance to industry
Drafts are the most annoying climatic factor at many workplaces and assumed to reduce satisfaction with work, to impair performance and perhaps even health (Griefahn et al., Ind. Health 38 (2000b) 30). The limitation of drafts is therefore an important contribution to industrial safety. Using the draft-rating model proposed in ISO 7730 (1994) for the evaluation and for the prediction of draft-induced annoyance, it must be considered that the model underestimates the effects of drafts in case of air velocities of 0.3 m/s which prevail at more than 85% of workplaces in offices and in the industry (Griefahn, 1999; Zhou, Ph.D. Thesis, International Center for Indoor Environment and Energy, Department of Energy Engineering, Technical University of Denmark, Lyngby, 1999). 相似文献
This research proposes a model that predicts the effect of the anode diffusion layer and membrane properties on the electrochemical performance and methanol crossover of a direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) membrane electrode assembly (MEA). It is an easily extensible, lumped DMFC model. Parameters used in this design model are experimentally obtainable, and some of the parameters are indicative of material characteristics. The quantification of these material parameters builds up a material database. Model parameters for various membranes and diffusion layers are determined by using various techniques such as polarization, mass balance, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and interpretation of the response of the cell to step changes in current. Since the investigation techniques cover different response times of the DMFC, processes in the cell such as transport, reaction and charge processes can be investigated separately. Properties of single layers of the MEA are systematically varied, and subsequent analysis enables identification of the influence of the layer's properties on the electrochemical performance and methanol crossover. Finally, a case study indicates that the use of a membrane with lower methanol diffusivity and a thicker anode micro-porous layer (MPL) yields MEAs with lower methanol crossover but similar power density. 相似文献
Propositions and Trends – With Functional Surfaces into the Future Functional surfaces are the key to innovative products. Already today the properties, lifetime, and costs for most industrial and consumer products are determined by functionalised surfaces. Three Fraunhofer Institutes supported by the BMBF investigated the actual state of the art of production technology regarding functional surfaces, their future perspectives and the research and development demand. The results are published in the study “Production technology for the generation of functional surfaces” available at info@ist.‐ fraunhofer.de and the essentials are summarised in this article. 相似文献
The processing parameters of finish rolling and cooling of three HSLA steels were varied in a wide range applying the plane strain hot compression simulation test on the hot deformation simulator (Wumsi). Evaluating the flow curves of the deformation steps, some metallurgical phenomena in austenite during hot deformation could be determined. The results of material testing after the simulation experiments exhibit a strong correlation between the finish rolling and cooling conditions and the final mechanical properties of the steels tested. As a way to increase strength, lowering finishing temperatures and/or accelerating cooling after finish rolling proved to be most effective. To improve notch toughness, on the other hand, a high total finishing strain should be applied as well as low finishing temperatures, however, above Ar3. 相似文献
First-principles calculations are performed to investigate dynamical and dielectric properties of group-III-nitrides. We focus

This survey shows that female representation in boards and management groups of large energy companies in Germany, Spain and Sweden is far from being gender-equal. Of the 464 companies surveyed, 295 (64%) had no women at all in boards or management groups and only 5% could be considered gender-equal by having 40% or more women in such positions. Interviews with energy companies confirmed current trends that gender equality efforts within decision-making in business are weak or non-existent. The findings are discussed against the background of differences in risk perceptions among women and men, evidence of women’s impact on boards and companies’ performance and the substantial risks related to unabated climate change. Research is suggested for exploring potential impacts on energy companies' performance with more women in the boards when it comes to mitigation activities. 相似文献
A promiscuous CDP-tyvelose 2-epimerase (TyvE) from Thermodesulfatator atlanticus (TaTyvE) belonging to the nucleotide sugar active short-chain dehydrogenase/reductase superfamily (NS-SDRs) was recently discovered. TaTyvE performs the slow conversion of NDP-glucose (NDP-Glc) to NDP-mannose (NDP-Man). Here, we present the sequence fingerprints that are indicative of the conversion of UDP-Glc to UDP-Man in TyvE-like enzymes based on the heptagonal box motifs. Our data-mining approach led to the identification of 11 additional TyvE-like enzymes for the conversion of UDP-Glc to UDP-Man. We characterized the top two wild-type candidates, which show a 15- and 20-fold improved catalytic efficiency, respectively, on UDP-Glc compared to TaTyvE. In addition, we present a quadruple variant of one of the identified enzymes with a 70-fold improved catalytic efficiency on UDP-Glc compared to TaTyvE. These findings could help the design of new nucleotide production pathways starting from a cheap sugar substrate like glucose or sucrose. 相似文献
The chemical composition of three essential oils obtained from the barks of three endemic Boswellia species namely, Boswellia dioscorides, Boswellia elongata and Boswellia socotrana which were collected from the Soqotra Island (Yemen), was investigated. In parallel to that evaluation of their antimicrobial and antioxidant activities was also carried out. The investigation led to the identification of 72, 70 and 67 constituents for B.dioscorides, B. elongata, and B. socotrana, respectively. The B. dioscorides oil was found to have a high content of monoterpene hydrocarbons (32.8%) with α-thujene (9.3%) and α-pinene (8.3%) as main components. Whereas, the essential oil of B. elongata was characterised by high diterpene content (31.7%), in which incensol (14.8%) was found to be the major constituent. On the other hand, the oil obtained from the B. socotrana was found to be predominated of monoterpene hydrocarbons (26.4%) and oxygenated monoterpenes (30.7%) with p-cymene (13.0%), 2-hydroxy-5-methoxy-acetophenone (16.3%) and camphor (11.6%). All essential oils possessed antimicrobial activity especially against Gram-positive bacteria with MIC-values between 1.8 and 17.2 mg/ml. Furthermore, the DPPH-radical scavenging assay exhibited only weak antioxidant activities (28%) at 1.0 mg/ml. 相似文献
