A review of extractive processes for lithium from ores and brines

A review of the methods and techniques used to win lithium from pegmatites, natural brines and clays. Additionally, the present procedures for extracting lithium metal from the chloride are outlined with purification and analytical methods discussed. Areas where research would be of benefit are pointed out in those circumstances where additional information will improve process efficiency or increase reserves.     

The essential chemical and physical properties of ferrous alloys needed for containment of liquid lithium

The suitability of ferrous alloys as materials for containment of liquid lithium is considered. The various forms of corrosion applicable to solid metal-liquid metal interactions are reviewed as it is shown that the most important property of a candidate containment material is its corrosion resistance. Data are presented which show that current technology can be used for proper material selection for temperatures up to 500C. However, for more severe applications, further research is required to define the mechanisms which control the corrosion processes in liquid lithium.

Asparaginase of Escherichia coli obtained according to the previously developed scheme (extraction, acidification, heating with ammonium sulphate, twice repeated precipitation with ethanol and DEAE-cellulose chromatography) was examined by the methods of polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, isoelectric focusing and molecular weight assay. Asparaginase activity was measured by the Nessler method. With respect to the above characteristics, the asparaginase preparation was very similar to those described in the literature, e.g. Krasnitin (FRG) and Leunase (Japan).     

Evidence of minimal cerebral asymmetries for the processing of English words and American sign language in the congenitally deaf

Nafcillin (N) pharmacokinetics was studied in 27 subjectswith and without renal failure (RF) (determined by endogenous creatinine clearance, Ccr). Elimination rate constants (K) were calculated from serial serum levels of N measured from 2 to 12 hr after a single 500-mg intramuscular injection. Only 4 of 9 hemodialysis patients had measurable levels of N at 24 hr. The K values for the groups with normal renal function,moderate RF, severe RF, and on hemodialysis were 0.477 hr(-1), 0.432 hr (1), 0.369 hr(-1), and 0.306 hr (-1), respectively...     

Driver judgments of relative car velocities.

In a study of the causes of rear end accidents, 11 Ss made judgments of the interval separating the car in which they were riding from a preceding car. Of 154 judgments, only 7 were potentially dangerous, although Ss "tended to underestimate the relative speed differential between their car and the one in front of it." Gonadal hormonal activity in males with chronic alcoholic intoxication

Study of the hormonal activity of the gonads of 97 males suffering from chronic alcoholism was undertaken to investigate the effects on hormonal secretion. An increased synthesis of androgens and estrogens was noted. The regularity of this increased with the duration of alcoholism. It is thought that the increased synthesis of sex hormones in chronic alcoholism is a defense adaptation directed to reducing the unfavorable effects of high concentration of alcohol in the blood. Alcoholism treatment involving teturam along with abstinence of alcohol caused a decrease in the functional activity of gonads, indicating the reversibility of this effect. The nature of functional alteration in the synthesis of sex hormones shows that it plays an essential role in the genesis of sexual impotence in alcoholism, through dyshormonal disruption of the endocrinal system.
