Control and diagnosis in the biotechnical systems of artificial clearance

Controlling and diagnostic processes in the bioengineering artificial clearance systems despite of the procedures applied, their functional use and design seem to occur in the artificial organs, each of them consists of controlling and actuating processors ensuring their homogeneous (material, energy-producing, informational) or combined interaction with the patient's body. Centralized control over artificial clearance is proposed by using universal controlling processes which are informationally connected with the operator, the central computer and other controlling processes of the bioengineering system.     

Structure of the repeating unit of acid polysaccharide from Alteromonas sp. 4MS17

An acidic polysaccharide from Alteromonas sp. 4MC17 is built up of trisaccharide repeating units containing D-glucose, D-mannose and D-galacturonic acid residues. On the basis of methylation studies, 1H and 13C NMR-spectroscopy data, including two-dimensional homonuclear correlation spectroscopy and nuclear Overhauser effects, the following structure was suggested for the polysaccharide repeating unit: -->4)-beta-D-Glcp-(1-->4)-beta-D-GalpA-(1-->4)-beta-D-Manp-( 1-->.     

Polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma of the parotid salivary gland

Polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma is an unusual tumor that has been described as occurring in the minor salivary glands, particularly of the palate. To our knowledge, there is only one previous report that has documented the occurrence of this type of lesion in the major salivary glands. We describe an elderly patient with polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma arising in the parotid gland that was originally diagnosed as carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma.     

Applying nursing theory to perioperative nursing practice

The perioperative nursing role has evolved from that of task-oriented specialists to patient-centered professionals. The concept of caring is significant to perioperative nurses and is manifested by the many caring behaviors perioperative nurses demonstrate toward surgical patients. This article describes how the element of caring is an essential function of perioperative nursing and relates the perioperative nursing role to the work of three nursing theorists (le, Florence Nightingale; Virginia Henderson, RN, AM; Carol L. Montgomery, RN, PhD).     

Isotope Exchange of Azidothymidine with Tritium

The following modes of isotope exchange of azidothymidine (3'-azido-3'-deoxythymidine) with tritium were studied: solid- and liquid-phase isotope exchange with gaseous tritium and isotope exchange in solution with tritium water. Catalytic reactions of azidothymidine with gaseous tritium in solution result in virtually complete reduction of the azido group to amino group. This reduction also occurs in the course of solid-phase catalytic hydrogenation; the yield of 3'-amino-3'-deoxythymidine ranges from 20 to 70%. The molar radioactivity of tritium-labeled azidothymidine prepared by solid-phase catalytic isotope exchange with gaseous tritium and by isotope exchange in solution with tritium water does not exceed 0.5 Ci mmol^{- 1}.
