Probability of malignant degeneration of ovarian tumors. Clinical study on the probability of malignant degeneration

More than 600 cases of ovarian tumors were analyzed for histological type, age of patient, bilateral occurrence, mobility and malignant degeneration in restant ovaries. Tumors of germinal epithelial origin show the highest incidence (24%) of malignant degeneration, tumors of germ cells the lowest (3,5%). Incidence of malignant degeneration increases in relation to the age of the patient from 2% (and under 30 years) to 36,5% (60-70 years). Each form of tumor has its typical age peak, which is about 20 years higher for carcinomas than for their benign counterpart. Bilateral ovarian tumors are malignant in 29%, one-sided only in 13%. Among freely movable ovarian tumors, only 6% enclose a malignant tumor, among adhaerent ones 34%. The examination of the prognosis of granulosacell-tumors, dysgerminomas and teratoblastomas is based on a larger material.     

Significance of adrenal hormones in brain energy metabolism

Intensity of glycolysis was studied under conditions of immobilization stress and adrenalectomy as well as with administration of adrenaline and hydrocortisone. The processes of aerobic glycolysis, activity of enzymes of the tricarboxylic acid cycle and mitochondria respiratory chain, content of total, free and protein-bound glycogen, glucose-I-phosphate, glucose-6-phosphate, pyruvate, alpha-ketoglutarate, cytrate and macroergs in the brain are shown to depend on the level of adrenal hormones producing a multilateral effect on a series of energy metabolism links.     

Effect of hypoxemia on the erythropoietic activity of organs during perfusion

Hypoxemia (45-minute) influence in vivo on erythropoietic activity of the kidney, liver, spleen, and sternum was studied by normoxemic perfusion of the isolated organs. The erythropoietic activity proved to increase after 6-hour perfusion of the liver; this confirmed the participation of this organ in the extrarenal secretion of the erythropoietic factor.     

Ultrastructural changes in articular cartilage in rheumatoid arthritis

Electron microscope studies of the articular cartilages removed in the course of the operation on 6 patients with rheumatoid arthritis were carried out. The processes of destruction of chondrocytes and the cartilaginous matrix in different regions of the articular cartilage were traced. In the surface areas of the drastically changed cartilage there were observed leucocytes of the synovial fluid, and in deeper areas--disintegration of chondrocytes and extracellular disposition of lysosomes and altered organellas, destroyed cartilaginous cells. In these areas destruction of collagenous fibres was particularly intensive. In areas of the tissue remote from the destuction hypertrophy of chondrocytes due to hyperplasia of various organellas and the Golgi complex in particular were noted. In the Golgi zone granules of glycogen were detected. No mitoses were observed. Apparently, the enzymatic destruction of the cartilaginous matrix in rheumatoid arthritis could proceed at the expense of the activazation of the synovial fluid lysosomes and lysosomes of chondrocytes themselves. A reparative regeneration of the disintegrating matrix was realized mainly because of hypertrophy of the functionally preserved chondrocytes.     

Recurrent Meesmann''s corneal epithelial dystrophy after penetrating keratoplasty

Endoscopic treatment of chronic pancreatitis has drawn benefits from endoscopic procedures previously described for the main bile duct. Endotherapy is developing throughout the world. Cyst drainage procedures certainly represent the largest step forward in that non-surgical approach, whatever it is either direct (through the stomach or the duodenum) or indirect through the papilla in the duodenum. This procedure gives similar results to surgery with a lower morbidity. Pancreatic duct drainage associated with stone clearance is feasible and provides good results which have not yet been compared with those obtained thanks to surgery. Nonetheless, when the duct is not widely dilated it has been proven to be a satisfactory alternative to surgery. By contrast, chronic cholestasis does not appear to be a good indication of endotherapy.     

Spin injection in n-type resonant tunneling diodes

We have studied the polarized resolved photoluminescence of n-type GaAs/AlAs/GaAlAs resonant tunneling diodes under magnetic field parallel to the tunnel current. Under resonant tunneling conditions, we have observed two emission lines attributed to neutral (X) and negatively charged excitons (X⁻). We have observed a voltage-controlled circular polarization degree from the quantum well emission for both lines, with values up to −88% at 15 T at low voltages which are ascribed to an efficient spin injection from the 2D gases formed at the accumulation layers.     

High J Pure Inversion Spectrum of ND3 in the v2 = 1 State

OBJECTIVE: The authors examined the efficacy of intramuscular flunitrazepam compared with intramuscular haloperidol for the immediate control of agitated or aggressive behavior in acutely psychotic patients. METHOD: Twenty-eight actively psychotic inpatients, aged 20-60 years, who were under treatment with neuroleptic agents were selected for the study. Each was randomly assigned on a double-blind basis to receive either 5 mg i.m. of haloperidol (N=13) or 1 mg i.m. of flunitrazepam (N=15) during an aggressive event. Verbal and physical aggression was measured over time with the Overt Aggression Scale. Patients were also rated with the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale and the Clinical Global Impression scale. RESULTS: Both flunitrazepam and haloperidol exhibited acute antiaggressive activity. This beneficial effect, as assessed by the Overt Aggression Scale, was obtained within 30 minutes. CONCLUSIONS: Intramuscular flunitrazepam may serve as a convenient, rapid, safe, and effective adjunct to neuroleptics in reducing aggressive behavior in emergency psychiatric settings.
