Dynamics of indicators of blood inorganic phosphorus during gastrointestinal surgery

BACKGROUND: There is a more and more interest regarding methods of obstetric analgesia and anesthesia while there is a lack of epidemiological data about local experiences. METHODS: This survey on obstetric anesthesia and analgesia in Abruzzo and Molise is based on data obtained from questionnaires of 28 questions sent to all the departments of anesthesiology in the two regions. DISCUSSION: Out of 24 questionnaires sent, 18 were returned. By analysing the replies obtained in this investigation it is clearly pointed out how the possibility of having peridural analgesia during labor is often not available. In fact, only one center is able to guarantee an operative service 24 hours a day. Many colleagues have reported this deficit and in order to improve the situation they have proposed to activate chargeable services for labor analgesia and to increase the staff of anesthetists. Also the data concerning treatment of post vaginal delivery pain are not satisfactory. With regard to the Caesarean sections, locoregional anesthesia is performed in 24% of all cases, while the highest scores are registered in the hospitals of Castel di Sangro and L'Aquila, where general anesthesia is practically never employed. Merely in 67% of all patients postoperative analgesia is carried out on a regular basis. CONCLUSIONS: The data obtained only confirm the extent of a well-known problem. In spite of the growing interest by the medical community, the attention shown for obstetric anesthesia and analgesia is, nevertheless, insufficient, especially due to financial and organizational problems which prevent from establishing a permanent pain therapy center.     

The teaching of physical examination in undergraduate nursing schools in the city of Sao Paulo]

The present study is an exploratory survey attempting to get the point of view of the faculty of subjects considered responsible by teaching physical examination in the nursing undergraduate schools of S?o Paulo city that were selected for this study. The goals were: to detect the situation of teaching of propaedeutics basis; to identify factors that make them difficult; and to identify the recommendations of the faculty for the improvement of teaching and its implementation. The population studied was formed by 39 faculty of the subjects considered responsible by teaching physical examination. Results show us there is not a specific subject to teach physical examination, although it is taught mainly in Fundamental Nursing; faculty are not entirely prepared to teach physical examination. To improve teaching of physical examination, the faculty suggest enhancing their knowledge and skills as well as to create a specific subject to teach physical examination with sufficient hours according to the content.     

Quantitation of carbenicillin disodium, cefazolin sodium, cephalothin sodium, nafcillin sodium, and ticarcillin disodium by high-pressure liquid chromatography

High-pressure liquid chromatographic (HPLC) methods for the quantitation of carbenicillin, cefazolin, cephalothin, nafcillin, and ticarcillin were developed. The stability of 2% solutions of the antibiotics in normal saline and in 5% dextrose in water were studied at 24 and 5 degrees. The assays were conducted using a previously reported colorimetric method, and some assays also were performed using HPLC. For discolored solutions of cephalothin, the colorimetric method was not stability indicating. The percent relative standard deviations by HPLC based on six injections were 1.69, 0.94, 1.30, 1.59, and 1.6 for carbenicillin, cefazolin, cephalothin, nafcillin, and ticarcillin, respectively. Both carbenicillin and ticarcillin apparently may be mixtures of two isomers at equilibrium with each other. The shelflives recommended by the manufacturers at 5 degrees may be too conservative.
