Endogenous opioids modulate allograft rejection time in mice: possible relation with Th1/Th2 cytokines

Massive enlargement of an extracerebral cavernous malformation and extension across tissue planes is very uncommon. The authors present the case of a 49-year-old woman with a giant cavernous malformation in the left frontotemporal area. It progressively enlarged during several decades, extended through the calvaria to the extradural space, and was surgically treated. The lesion may have originated in the soft tissue or the skull. The locations of cavernous malformations in various parts of the body are reviewed and their mechanisms of growth are discussed. Surgical excision is the treatment of choice.     

Vitamin E modifies neither fructosamine nor HbA1c levels in poorly controlled diabetes

OBJECTIVE: To examine the effects of vitamin E on total serum protein glycation (fructosamine), hemoglobin glycation (HbA1c), and serum levels of glucose, total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL-C, HDL-C, apolipoprotein A1 and apolipoprotein B. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sixty poorly controlled diabetic patients were randomly assigned to receive either 1200 mg/day of vitamin E or identical placebo capsules during a two month period following a double blind cross-over design with a four week wash-out period between regimens. RESULTS: Seven patients were excluded from the study because of reasons not related to the medication. In the remaining 53 patients, the levels of serum glucose, fructosamine, HbA1c, total cholesterol, HDL-C, LDL-C, Apo A1 and Apo B did not vary significantly with vitamin E as compared with placebo. CONCLUSIONS: No significant effects of vitamin E on any of the parameters evaluated were observed in poorly controlled diabetic patients.

Wide Area Paging

This paper is a survey on paging, the advantage of paging for the customers and the operators and a comparison with other solutions for mobile communications. It contains figures of the market in Europe and overseas. Another part describes some technical parameters and paging standards, especially the ERMES standard, which was developed in Europa by ETSI. It concludes with an example of a real implementation of the ERMES standard to an paging system.

This paper presents an efficient multiple exchange algorithm for the frequency domain design of digital FIR filters with arbitrary magnitude and phase responses. The designed filters minimize theL ₂ norm of the weighted complex frequency domain error function subject to constraints on the resulting magnitude and phase errors. This general design criterion allows for an arbitrary trade-off between complexL ₂ approximation and Chebyshev approximation of given magnitude and phase responses. The optimization can be carried out by iteratively solving small quadratic programs. These linearly constrained subproblems can be solved using robust standard software.
