Three-dimensional facial morphometry and conventional cephalometrics: a correlation study

Analysis of genomic sequences is necessarily an ongoing process. Initial gene assignments tend (wisely) to be on the conservative side (Venter, 1996). The analysis of the genome then grows in an iterative fashion as additional data and more sophisticated algorithms are brought to bear on the data. The present report is an emendation of the original gene list of Methanococcus jannaschii (Bult et al., 1996). By using a somewhat more updated database and more relaxed (and operator-intensive) pattern matching methods, we were able to add significantly to, and in a few cases amend, the gene identification table originally published by Bult et al. (1996).     

Stability and improvement of health after nursing home admission

This prospective study investigated stability of residents' mental status, function (activities of daily living), and mood during the first and second week following nursing home admission. New residents (N = 647) in eight urban nursing homes were assessed three times. Mental status was measured using the Short Portable Mental Status Questionnaire, function was measured using Scaled Outcome Criteria, and mood was measured using the Mood Adjective Checklist. A repeated measures multivariate analysis of variance, controlling for admission from hospital and readmission to the nursing home, documented stable mental status during the first and second week of nursing home residence. Hygiene, grooming, dressing, and transferring improved, whereas feeding, ambulation, urination, and defecation were stable. Tired and depressed mood adjectives improved, and angry, cheerful, afraid, lonely, and alert mood adjectives were stable. Residents admitted from a hospital had lower mental status and function scores, and readmitted residents had lower urination scores.     

Generation of coherent radiation in XUV by fifth- and seventh-order frequency conversion in rare gases

Results of experimental studies of the generation of coherent radiation in the XUV by high order optical nonlinearities in the rare gases are described. Fifth- and seventh-harmonic conversion and six wave mixing of harmonic pulses from an Nd:YAG laser were used to produce radiation at several discrete wavelengths between 38 and 76 nm. Experimental measurements of fifth-haxmonic conversion of pump pulses at 266.1 nm in helium are compared with theoretical predictions. Discrepancies between theory and experiment are observed at high laser powers, and the role of competing processes is discussed.     

Renal cell tumours in mice: electron microscopy versus immunohistochemistry

15 renal cell tumours induced in CBA male mice by 1,2-dimethylhydrazine were studied electronmicroscopically (EM). All these tumours earlier were investigated histochemically and immunohistochemically with the use of gamma-glutamyltranspeptidase (GGT) as a marker of the proximal tubules and antigen A6 as a marker of distal tubules and/or collecting ducts. One of the tumours was GGT-positive and antigen A6-negative and ultrastructurally well developed brush border was found. This correlation between immunohistochemistry and EM data allowed to conclude that the site of origin of this tumour were the cells of the proximal tubules. All other tumours were GGT-negative and antigen A6-positive, i.e. the development of these tumours from the distal tubules (and not from the proximal tubules) could be suspected. However in 5 of these neoplasms reduced brush border was found. Microvilli were of a smaller size than in normal proximal tubules and were frequently located not on the apical cell surface but in the narrow spaces between two cells. Invaginations and apical vesicles typical for the normal proximal tubules were also found in some tumour cells. EM and immunohistochemical data combined allow to suggest the origin of these tumours from the common precursor cell capable of differentiation, in the course of tumour progression, into the cells with properties of proximal and/or distal tubules.
