An experimental study of the anti-ulcer properties of an extract of poplar bark

Marked antiulcerative properties of a Populus tremula bark extract were demonstrated in experiments on mice and rats with stress-, reserpine-induced, and acetylsalicylic ulcers. The gastroprotective activity of the extract was expressed in decrease in the number of animals with mucosal ulcers and in marked decrease in the number of ulcers. It exceeded similar parameters of alanton, plantaglucide, and Hippopheae oil.     

Color vision discrimination in the capuchin monkey Cebus apella: evidence for trichromaticity

Primates display significant differences in color vision. The purpose of this study was to assess the ability of capuchin monkeys in discriminating chromatic and achromatic Munsell color chips through behavioral tests. The subjects were trained in a simple and reverse discrimination learning procedure. All subjects were capable of discriminations along five color categories investigated. The results are discussed in terms of the hypothesis of male dichromatism in New World monkeys, the role of color vision in adaptation to feeding ecology, as well as to aspects regarding primate evolution.     

Neurofibromatosis 2 in the pediatric age group

Cataract surgeons frequently face the challenge of treating an open-angle glaucoma patient presenting for cataract surgery and intraocular lens implantation. It seems logical to treat both problems during the same surgical procedure if it can be done without jeopardizing the results of either. We present a short historic overview of the trabeculotomy procedure in adults, together with our technique using the new Fukasaku modification of the instrumentation (probes and forceps) and report 50 consecutive cases with a 100% three-month follow-up. The mean preoperative intraocular pressure was 19.3 mm Hg (range 16.0 to 37.0 mm Hg); three months after surgery it was 14.2 mm Hg (range 6.0 to 24.0 mm Hg). The mean preoperative pressure-reducing medications were 2.3 drugs per patient, and the postoperative mean was 0.7. Except for three cases of small postoperative hyphemas, no other complications were encountered during the study.     

Epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus and bluetongue virus serotype distribution in white-tailed deer in Georgia

Assessment of the current incidence of different adenovirus types in local gastroenteritis involved the examination of over 1,000 stool specimens annually from 1988-1992. Adenoviruses were detected by electron microscopy and/or cell culture in 32% of the specimens in which a viral pathogen was detected. The identification of every adenovirus isolate to type by neutralization with specific antisera against the first 6 types and by restriction analysis of nonneutralized isolates was started in 1990. Samples from 1988 and 1989 were examined retrospectively. Adenovirus strains were compared to those isolated in a study between 1980-1983. Enumeration of individual adenovirus types revealed a number of trends, demonstrating that rapid changes in the local incidence of several strains were occurring in Manitoba. The incidence of adenovirus type 40 (Ad40) as a cause of gastroenteritis was found to have fallen dramatically in recent years. The predominant cause of gastroenteritis in Manitoba is a variant strain of Ad41, increasing in predominance each year and now responsible for over a third of the symptomatic cases examined since 1990. The majority of restriction site differences of the Ad41 variant strain from the prototype strain Tak were mapped to the hexon and fiber genes, both of which code for the neutralizable external viral epitopes. The probability of the observed pattern of mutations occurring by chance was calculated as P < 0.0005, indicating a strong pressure for selection of these immunologically significant alterations to the viral proteins responsible for cell attachment.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

p-Chlorotetrafluorophenyl esters of N-protected amino acids

p-Chlorotetrafluorophenyl (Tfc) esters of protected amino acids and peptides are more reactive than are the well known pentafluorophenyl (Pfp) esters. Two reagents, p-chlorotetrafluorophenyltrifluoroacetate (Tfc-OTfa) and di-(p-chlorotetrafluorophenyl)carbonate (di-Tfc-carbonate), can be used for their syntheses, thereby avoiding use of the allergic dicyclohexylcarbodiimide. This is especially important for bulk preparations. Many Fmoc- and Boc-amino acid-OTfc esters have been synthesized and characterized. The hexadecameric tandem repeat H-(AlaAlaLysPro)4-OH was synthesized using di-Tfc-carbonate for the preparation of Tfc-esters.     

Immunobiological properties of phospholipid antigens of Rickettsia prowazekii incorporated into rickettsial liposomal preparations]

We have reviewed our delivery of highly sophisticated medical therapy, haemodialysis and renal transplantation in a Caribbean setting. The purpose has been to reflect local outcomes in relation to mortality and survival, but comparisons with a vastly larger database have been attempted. Such comparisons are extremely difficult due to methodological differences and the fact that facilities contributing to that database vary considerably with regard to patient age, gender, ethnicity and comorbidity. Nonetheless, the crude data available provide important justification for the existence of regular haemodialysis and its adjunctive therapy of renal transplantation in the Caribbean.     

Endocrine apparatus of the epithelium of the appendicular mucosa (the appendix-- an endocrine gland, functioning in the embryonal period?

Based on the concept on gastroenteropancreatic system, endocrinocytes of which are diffusely scattered throughout the digestive tract epithelium and are found in pancreatic islets, an analysis of endocrine apparatus of epithelium in human appendicular mucosa was performed at different stages of ontogenesis. The response of appendicular endocrinocytes to clinical pathology of both this organ and the entire organism was studied. On the base of the analysis of the appendix function from morphological view, the authors proposed a hypothesis postulating it to be an organ equal to an actively functioning endocrine gland and its unique role on early stages of embryogenesis.
