Evaluation of the stability of parameters of direct radiographic devices

AIM: To study efficacy and tolerance of cardioselective beta-adrenoblocker lokren (betaxolol) in elderly patients with mild and moderate hypertension. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 25 elderly (mean age 70.2 +/- 1.43 years) hypertensive patients received lokren (a single dose of 10 mg daily for 3 months). The examination comprised routine tests, ECG, rheovasography of the ankle, REG of vertebral and carotid arteries, measurements of ejection fraction, total peripheral vascular resistance, myocardial mass, platelet aggregation, external respiration function, blood glucose, total cholesterol, triglycerides, beta-lipoprotein. RESULTS: The treatment produced a significant reduction in systolic (by 32.1% and 32.7% in position, respectively) and diastolic pressure (by 14.2 and 11.8%, respectively). Thickness of the posterior wall of the left ventricular myocardium decreased by 7.7%, ejection fraction by 2.9%, total peripheral vascular resistance went up by 11.5%. Spontaneous and induced platelet aggregation declined. There was an insignificant rise in the levels of cholesterol, beta-lipoproteins, triglycerides, glucose. REG and rheovasography data tended to a small rise. External respiration remained unchanged. The need in nitroglycerin reduced by 58%. CONCLUSION: Lokren (betaxolol) can be recommended as effective hypotensive monotherapy of mild and moderate blood hypertension in elderly patients.     

New approaches to the evaluation of risk of acute poisoning during technogenic accidental emissions (for example, ammonia and chlorine)

The authors elaborated new methodic approaches to evaluation of acute ammonium and chlorine toxicity caused by possible accidental release. The approaches are based on comparison of clinical and toxicologic characteristics of various types of acute chlorine poisoning with calculated levels of chlorine in air.     

Study of antiinfectious potential of recombinant tumor necrosis factor-alpha

46 patients with coronary heart disease with hypercholesterolemia were exposed to therapeutic plasmapheresis (TP) in combination with alpha-tocopherol treatment (AT). The results of 3-month follow-up with assessment of the clinical status, lipid spectrum, lipid peroxidation, concentration of ceruloplasmin indicated high hypolipidemic effectiveness of TP 2-3 weeks after the treatment as shown by inhibition of lipid peroxidation and antioxidant system. The addition of AT prolonged the hypolipidemic effect of TP, promoted optimization of plasma antioxidant potential (a rise in HDL, stabilization of ceruloplasmin levels).     

Efficiency of computed tomography in diagnosis of silicotuberculosis

Seventy-five newborns from multiple pregnancies with very low and extremely low birth weight are studied. 94% of the infants under 1000 g and 66% of those above 1000 g are born by vaginal way. Intrapartal asphyxia develop most often the second twins with birth weight under 1000 g--64.7%. These are the infants with higher morbidity: RDS--56.5%, IVH--100%. The survival rate of the twins of this group is notably lower than that of the infants from singleton pregnancies with equal weight and gestational age: 12.1% under 1000 g and 69% above 1000 g, against 38.3% and 77.9% respectively.     

The functional specificity of the cardiac pacemaker system

On the basis of the own and literature data the original conception on pacemaker system of the heart experimentally is grounded. The new classification of the specialized structure--functional formations in the heart is suggested. The functional specificity of pacemaker system is considered in the comparative-ontogenetic aspect.     

Ether lipids and platelet-activating factor: evolution and cellular function

This review considers the relation between the evolution of ether lipids and platelet-activating factor (PAF) in living organisms for the first time. Ether lipids are shown to be the main structural lipid components in the cells of the most primitive organisms on the Earth; during evolution they were gradually substituted for lipids with ester and vinyl bonds. Synthesis of PAF has been found in some bacteria, protozoans, yeasts, plants, marine invertebrates, lower vertebrates, and mammals. The regulatory role of PAF is suggested to already appear in protozoans and later be maintained during the subsequent evolution of living organisms. During evolution, functions of PAF in the cell have been changing and enlarging, while ether lipids have been gradually losing their role as the main structural lipid component of the cells of living organisms.
