Factors in the persistence of opportunistic microorganisms in dysbacteriosis of the gastrointestinal tract

The presence of correlation between the quantitative content of individual carboxylic acids and aromatic compounds of microbial origin in feces and the degree of the antagonistic activity of feces was proved in experiments on conventional laboratory rats receiving therapeutic doses of tetracyclin and pefloxacin for 8 days. Antagonistic activity was regarded as one of the factors of the colonization resistance of the intestine to the invasion of opportunistic microorganisms, and microbial metabolites studied in this work were regarded as factors contributing to the persistence of these microorganisms.     

Experimental study of therapeutical properties and safety of king crab collagenase-containing ointment

The effects of ointment containing king crab (Paralithodes camtschatica) collagenase on intact skin, thermal, and pyonecrotic wounds were studied in rats by using hematological, biochemical, immunological, and morphological methods. The ointment for the skin and viscera was shown to be safe. It is highly effective in debriding the infected wounds. Different concentrations of collagenase were tested. The concentration of collagenase was recommended to be 0.2 mg/g ointment for use.     

Effect of the optimal neuroprotective doses of alpha2-adrenoreceptor agonists on the total cerebral blood flow in the normal conditions and in subsequent ischemia

Optimal neuroprotective doses of clonidine and guanobenz considerably reduce the total cerebral blood flow and reduce or do not change arterial pressure. In occlusion of the carotid arteries the alpha 2-agonists fail to reduce the degree of cerebral ischemia and hypotension. The neuroprotective effect of alpha 2-adrenoceptor-agonists is not a result of cerebral blood flow improvement.     

Inelastic x-ray scattering from TiC and Ti single crystals

During a study of microbial communities in athalassic bodies of water, three new species within the genus Spirochaeta were described. These are alkaliphilic Spirochaeta alkalica sp. nov. Z-7491 (DSM 8900) and halophilic S. africana sp. nov. Z-7692 (DSM 8902) from the soda-depositing Lake Magadi in Central Africa and haloalkaliphilic S. asiatica sp. nov. Z-7591 (DSM 8901) from Lake Khatyn, Central Asia. These mesophilic spirochetes develop at pHs of > 9 as anaerobic saccharolytic dissipotrophs. The DNA base compositions (moles percent G+C) of the strains were as follows: S. alkalica Z-7491, 57.1; S. africana Z-7692, 56.1; and S. asiatica Z-7591, 49.2. The optimum growth parameters (temperature, pH, and NaCl concentration [percent, wt/vol], respectively) were as follows: for S. alkalica Z-7491, 35 degrees C, 9.2, and 5 to 7%; for S. africana Z-7692, 35 degrees C, 9.3, and 5 to 7%; and for S. asiatica Z-7591, 35 degrees C, 8.9, and 3 to 6%. The products of glucose fermentation were acetate, hydrogen, ethanol, and lactate, in different proportions, for S. alkalica and S. africana; for S. asiatica, they were acetate, ethanol, and lactate. S. asiatica is strictly anaerobic, while S. alkalica and S. africana are rather aerotolerant. All three species group within the radiation of the majority of the species of the genus Spirochaeta. Studies of the genes encoding 16S rRNA indicate a possible fanning out of the phylogenetic tree of spirochetes.     

The diagnosis of occupational myofibrosis]

110 cases of resection of the stomach with transection of the stomach and the duodenum by plasmic scalpel and suturing of curvatura minor of the stump and anastomosis with the use of original one-layer sero-muscular-submucosal suture have been analysed. Changes in gastric wound at the site of plasma transection were evaluated microscopically. It was established that plasma transection of the stomach is aseptic, hemostatic, thermal trauma is minimal and does not exceed the level of 3-4 mm from transection line. Favourable conditions for applications of one-layer suture contribute much to a decrease of the number of stitch puncture, to rejection of catgut, to reduction of tissue mass involved and deformation of intestinal wall. In the early postoperative period wound and anastomoses healing occurred without substantial inflammatory changes. 109 patients were operated by Billroth-1 and 1 patient--by Billroth-II. One patient died (lethality 0.9%). Early postoperative complications occurred in 7.2% of operated patients.     

Isolation of Vibrio cholerae O139 from the drinking water supply during an epidemic of cholera

In mid-1994, the public water supply was investigated in a medium-sized town in south India during an epidemic of cholera due to Vibrio cholerae O139. Vibrio cholerae O139 was isolated from the public water supply including one of the wells supplying the town, the central overhead tank, and domestic taps connected to the public supply. Following chlorination, the organism was no longer isolated from the water supply and the epidemic subsided. This demonstration of V. cholerae O139 in the drinking water supply of a town underlines the need for adequate treatment of the water supply.     

Microsomal protein changes in the brain of hens in ontogeny

Studies have been made on the peripheral (extracted by 1 M KCl, pH 9.0) and integral (successively extracted by a 1% solution of Triton X-100 and 0.3% solution of sodium dodecyl sulfate) microsomal proteins from the brain of chick embryos beginning from the 8th day of incubation, chicks and adult hens up to 1 year 4 months. Investigation was made of the quantity, fractional composition (by means of polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis) and the rate of incorporation of 14C-lysine. It was found that the content of these membrane proteins and their composition depend on the age of animals. Integral proteins as compared with peripheral ones exhibit higher rate of incorporation of the labeled amino acid, this rate increasing with the age of animals.
