Psychology at the Intersection of Work and Family: Recommendations for Employers, Working Families, and Policymakers.

Demographic data show that major changes have been occurring in the everyday lives of families over the last generation, with the majority of mothers of young children in the workforce and an increasing number of men and women assuming caregiving responsibilities for older relatives. Thus, the 2 primary identities of most adults, defined by their multiple family and work roles, need to be coordinated in ways that promote positive family outcomes, returns on investments for employers, and societal values. Despite changes in the workforce, the world of work is still largely organized for a family model that is increasingly rare--one with a stay-at-home caregiver. Recommendations based on psychological and other social science research are offered to align the needs of working families and employers. The effect of microgravity and space flight on the chemical senses

ABSTRACT: The effect of space flight and microgravity on the chemical senses is reviewed. Skylab-4 and Soyuz 30–31 studies revealed changes in taste thresholds while no effect was found in a Canadian investigation (41-G) and conflicting results were obtained on another Soyuz mission. Two simulated microgravity studies found no effect on taste or smell sensitivity; while 5 other studies found an effect. Microgravity induces physiological changes including an upward shift of body fluids toward the head, which may lead to an attenuation of the olfactory component in the flavor of foods. Chemosensory changes may also relate to space sickness, Shuttle atmosphere, stress, radiation, and psychological factors.     

The effect of intravenous and oral fluconazole on the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of intravenous alfentanil

The growth-promoting activity of PDGF-BB was studied on the adult osteoclasts in the present study. The PDGF receptor beta was detected on the osteoclast membrane through immunohistochemistry (LSAB method) and immunomicroscopy. The PDGF-BB was exerted on the osteoclasts that adhered to the bone slice at concentrations of 0, 10, 20, 30, and 40 ng/ml. The volume of Howship's lacuna augmented significantly and the number of resorption pits also increased with its dose (p < 0.01). The activity of both total acid phosphatase (ACP) and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) increased significantly. These results suggest that PDGF-BB promotes adult osteoclastic bone resorption directly through PDGF receptor beta and is believed to play important roles in the bone healing process and reconstruction.     

Blood and plasma selenium levels and GSH-Px activities in patients with arterial hypertension and chronic heart disease

Among the 57 monoclonal antibodies analyzed within the T-cell group of the Second International Swine CD Workshop, one mAb fell within cluster T14a that included the CD6 standard a38b2 (No. 175). The new mAb MIL8 (No. 082) and a38b2 both precipitated from activated T-cells a 150 kDa monomeric protein. Staining patterns on the various cell types were similar. There was no inhibition of binding of either mAb to peripheral blood T-cells with the opposite mAb. The new mAb, MIL8, reacts with a separate epitope on porcine wCD6.     

Clenbuterol and anabolic steroids: a previously unreported cause of myocardial infarction with normal coronary arteriograms

During the last 10 years, several cases of myocardial infarction associated with anabolic steroid use have been reported. Postulated mechanisms to explain this association have included changes in lipid levels, the fibrinolytic system, and platelet aggregation. Clenbuterol is a beta 2-agonist with anabolic properties that has not been seen previously with myocardial infarction. We report a case of myocardial infarction in an otherwise healthy 26-year-old body-builder who recently used clenbuterol and anabolic steroids. In this case, synergistic effects of the two agents seem likely to have played a role in the infarct. The normal coronary arteriograms before any anticoagulant or thrombolytic therapy strongly suggest coronary spasm as the mechanism of the infarct.     

Research and the cumulation of knowledge in Physical Therapy

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Published research contributes to the knowledge base that distinguishes one discipline from another. More research is now published in the physical therapy journals, but concerns with the profession's knowledge base continue. SUBJECTS: The study examined citations from 78 clinical articles published and indexed on three thematic areas in Physical Therapy between 1951 and 1990. METHODS: Unique items and multiple-cited items were identified and counted and their sources ascertained. Linkages among multiple-cited items in each thematic area were identified and described. RESULTS: Most cited items were unique and not from the physical therapy literature. Few linkages were identified among the clinical articles. CONCLUSION AND DISCUSSION: The lack of evidence of cumulation or of coherence among the articles examined and the extent of reliance on non-physical therapy sources suggest that concerns with the knowledge base of the profession are well founded.     

Functionalized 1,3-teraryls as a new class of hepatoprotectants. Part V

A 29-year-old man was admitted to the hospital because of a high fever and dyspnea. He had a history of bronchial asthma and had had a bullectomy of the right lung at 15 years of age. He had visited a family physician because of fever and non productive coughing. Medications had no effect on his symptoms, and dyspnea developed. A chest X-ray film showed total collapse of the right lung, and he was referred to our hospital. Laboratory data showed eosinophilia and a high titer of IgE. Total obstruction of the right main stem bronchus by mucous plug was found during fiberoptic bronchoscopy. Aspergillus was detected by pathological examination of bronchial lavage fluid. Tests for aspergillus-specific IgE and IgG antibody were positive, as was immediate skin reactivity to Aspergillus. Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) was diagnosed. Infusion and inhalation of a corticosteroid and fluconazole were effective; the symptoms resolved and X-ray findings improved. While migratory infiltration, proximal bronchiectasis and segmental or subsegmental atelectasis caused by a mucous plug are common X-ray findings in allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis, total collapse is rare.
