A multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of child abuse

A multidisciplinary team of professionals and paraprofessionals provides an innovative therapeutic approach for the treatment of child abuse and neglect among a deprived and disadvantaged population of abusing mothers. The therapeutic approach stresses residential care for mother and child, behavior modification through corrective child care experiences, personality modifications through individual and group therapy, and environmental and social changes through staff assistance and education.     

Traveling wave lobe locations

A simple and reasonably accurate formula for the angular locations of traveling wave lobes has been available for many years, but the formula holds only for surface waves that travel at the speed of light. It is shown how the formula may be modified to account for propagation velocities less than the speed of light. It is shown that when the equation derived by the author is used to estimate a starting value for cosQ in the Newton-Raphson method, the solution usually requires no more than three iterations for an accuracy of 10^-6 in the solution for Q     

Cross polarization diagnostics

The cross polarized radar cross section of simple axially symmetric objects is shown to be related to transverse body dimensions and the severity of any edges.     

Membrane filter procedure for enumeration of Vibrio parahaemolyticus

A membrane filtration procedure has been developed for the enumeration of Vibrio parahaemolyticus in marine waters. Background microbial growth on the primary medium was decreased through the use of sodium cholate and copper sulfate, high pH, 3% NaCl, and an elevated incubation temperature. A series of in situ tests was employed to obviate the picking of colonies for identification; thereby, the enumeration of V. parahaemolyticus was accomplished within 30 h. Confirmation of typical colonies approached 95%. Relative to immediate plating on brain heart infusion agar spread plates, the recovery of V. parahaemolyticus cells suspended in phosphate-buffered saline or in seawater held for 24 h at 4 to 6 degrees C was about 90%. Assay variability did not exceed that expected by chance. Recoveries of V. parahaemolyticus from coastal and estuarine surface waters exceeded those obtainable by other methods examined.     

Determination of the efficacy of the mechanism changing the relative rate of blood flow through cutaneous and deep lying veins with temperature

An analytical model of the circulation in the upper extremities of man is used; it consists of one artery, a deep vein lying close to the artery and returning a fraction p of the arterial blood flow, and a cutaneous vein carrying the fraction (1 - p). Using the model, a method is given for finding, for any subject, the efficiency of the mechanism which changes the circulation pattern with temperature. A patient's extremity is immersed in water at 25 and 10 degrees c and the rate of blood flow and rate of heat loss from that flow are measured. Computation of p for these two temperatures is reduced to the solution of two linear equations. The method is applied to 11 subjects and gives good agreement with results obtained by a more elaborate method.

Conditions for optimum noise performance in l.f. amplifiers employing junction f.e.t.s

Increasing the drain current of an f.e.t. can result in an improvement of the noise performance at medium frequencies, but, owing to changes in the noise spectrum of the device, a deterioration of the low-frequency noise performance can result. Measurements in the frequency range 1 Hz?1 kHz on some low-noise samples of f.e.t.s show that the drain current is not critical up to a limit, but, above this limit, the noise performance below 10 Hz deteriorates rapidly.
