The treatment of atypical manias with finlepsin-retard

The article presents results of clinical trial of finlepsine-retard. Objectivized parameters characterizing the time course of psychopathologic symptoms were studied in certain concentrations of finlepsine and beta-endrofin in blood serum. Atypical maniac states do not easily respond to therapies but finlepsine-retard gives the modern psychopharmacotherapy a new horizon.     

Rapid chromosomal analysis of germ-line cells by FISH: an investigation of an infertile male with large-headed spermatozoa

A rapid fluorescence in-situ hybridization (FISH) technique was used for direct chromosomal analysis on germ cells from an infertile male with large-headed spermatozoa. The interphase chromosomes were fluorescently-labelled using an extremely bright cyanine dye during a 5-15 min FISH procedure. Germ cells were analysed using a battery of chromosome-specific DNA probes in several consecutive rapid FISH experiments. It was found that the majority of large-headed spermatozoa contained a diploid chromosome number probably due to errors in meiosis I or II divisions, whereas the majority of spermatozoa with normal sized heads are haploid and may be utilized for selective in-vitro fertilization procedures. Rapid FISH may be useful for the detection of major chromosomal aneuploidies in germ cells as an alternative technique to standard or multicolour FISH, and may find an additional application for the chromosomal analysis of human preimplantation embryos.     

Endonucleolysis of chromatin in rat thymus and spleen lymphocytes after irradiation

The level of soluble DNA fragments (polydesoxynucleotides) in thymus and spleen lymphocytes is enhanced 12 h after the whole-body X-ray irradiation in dose of 0.5 and 1 Gy. The level of Ca2+, Mg(2+)-DNAase activity in lysed cells extracts, measured with calf spleen DNA, was enhanced in the region of 0.1-0.5 mM CaCl2 in incubation medium and decreased at 5 mM CaCl2. Monitoring of DNA fragmentation by electrophoresis in agarose gels showed the presence of fragments with approximately 200, 400, 800 bp length. X-ray induced DNA fragmentation is supposed to be associated with Ca2+, Mg(2+)-endonuclease activation.     

Postsplenectomy blood values, marrow cytology, erythrocyte life-span, and sequestration in mice

Studies in mice indicated that splenectomy influenced neither the erythrocyte and leukocyte total and differential values nor the erythrocyte survival. The right femoral marrow erythrocyte and nucleated cell counts were also not altered by splenectomy, and compensation for the important splenic contribution to erythropoiesis was in the form of marrow erythroid hyperplasia with a drop in the myeloid:erythroid ratio from 2.79:1.00 in intact mice to 1.44:1.00 in splenectomized mice. The spleen was the most important site for the sequestration of erythrocytes as monitored by tissue localization of 51Cr-labeled erythrocytes, and this function was assumed by the liver in splenectomized mice by almost doubling its activity. The total residual body count was, however, significantly decreased (P less than 0.01) by splenectomy.     

The regional morphological characteristics of the endothelium of the human thoracic aorta in perfusion fixation

The ultramicroscopic organization and the endotheliocyte surface relief in ventral portions of the thoracic part of human aorta and in zones of division of blood flow were studied under conditions of early post mortem examinations and perfusion fixation of corpses of 14 humans dead from accidental causes. Zones of entrance into the intercostal aortas are compared with the straight portions of the aorta and are found to be characterized, as compared with the latters, by polymorphism of the endothelium, higher adhesiveness of its surface to blood elements, as well as by the presence of intravitally de-endothelialized portions localized on the ridge of the intimal valve.     

Significance of nondiagnostic fine-needle aspiration of the thyroid

BACKGROUND: Fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) has been shown to be rapid and cost effective in the evaluation of thyroid nodules. The significance of nondiagnostic (unsatisfactory) FNAB is uncertain, however. METHODS: We reviewed 345 consecutive thyroid FNABs and identified 59 patients with initially unsatisfactory specimens. These patients had follow-up to determine whether their thyroid nodules proved to be malignant. RESULTS: Three patients (5.1%) were found to have organ-confined papillary carcinoma of the thyroid, the largest tumor mass measuring 1.2 cm. Six patients (10.2%) had benign adenomas. CONCLUSIONS: In most cases of initially nondiagnostic FNAB of a thyroid nodule, neoplasia is not found subsequently. A minority of cases may still harbor malignancy. None of our patients in whom repeated FNA was either nondiagnostic or suggestive of benign disease were ultimately found to have a malignancy.
