A survey of 4478 biopsy specimens of oral lesions

A surgery of 4478 biopsy specimens in dental institute in India was carried out to compare and correlate results obtained from such studies carried out elsewhere. The study revealed that there are more than 150 common and rare oral diseases which are diagnosed and treated by dentists. 13 common diseases comprised majority (60.37%) of the biopsy specimens studied. Of these, tumors (25.53%) and Cysts (14.38%) constituted the majority of the bulk. The study also shows that most of the benign tumors were mesenchymal in origin (almost 5.5:1) while malignant tumors were epithelial (almost 20:1) in origin. Cystic lesions included the most common radicular cyst (7.12%) and the rare hydatid cyst (one case reported). Gingival hyperplasia mainly due to local aetiology, constituted the 3rd largest group. The purpose of this report is to provide some information about the type and frequency of oral lesions usually diagnosed, with the help of histopathological examination in India.     

Formation of zirconium diboride nanoparticles as a result of reaction between zirconium tetrachloride and sodium borohydride

We have studied reaction between ZrCl₄ and NaBH₄ at temperatures between 300 and 725°C. The results demonstrate that single-phase zirconium diboride nanoparticles are formed starting at 575°C. According to electron microscopy data, the ZrB₂ powder obtained at 575 and 725°C consists of variously shaped particles, some of which are almost spherical, ranging in diameter from ~10 to 20 and from 25 to 35 nm, respectively. These values agree with the equivalent particle diameters evaluated from the measured specific surface area of ZrB₂, ~14 and ~32 nm, respectively, and with the crystallite size extracted from X-ray diffraction data: D _hkl ~ 13 and 28 nm.     

Clinical picture of gonadal dysgenesis in the children's and adolescents' consulting hours

Report on 34 patients with gonodal dysgenesis and chromosomal aberrations ranging in age from 4 to 28 years. The observation time amount to five years on the average. 23 urological examinations revealed 12 kidney malformations (=52,2 percent). Special pathological x-ray findings on hands and writs were significantly more frequent in Turner's disease than in normal population. In T.S. the average value of conspicicous dactyloscopic findings was about 3,0 patient, (in family members it was 0,9 test person). In the most of all cases the psychological examination resulted in dependence and less of contact. Sexuell inclinations are denied. The hormonal substitution was carried out with "Mestranol" or with "Sequenz-Ovosiston".     

Characterization of insulin receptor substrate 4 in human embryonic kidney 293 cells

We recently cloned IRS-4, a new member of the insulin receptor substrate (IRS) family. In this study we have characterized IRS-4 in human embryonic kidney 293 cells, where it was originally discovered. IRS-4 was the predominant insulin-elicited phosphotyrosine protein in these cells. Subcellular fractionation revealed that about 50% of IRS-4 was located in cellular membranes, and immunofluorescence indicated that IRS-4 was concentrated at the plasma membrane. Immunoelectron microscopy conclusively established that a large portion of the IRS-4 was located at the cytoplasmic surface of the plasma membrane in both the unstimulated and insulin-treated states. IRS-4 was found to be associated with two src homology 2 (SH2) domain-containing proteins, phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase and Grb2, the adaptor to the guanine nucleotide exchange factor for Ras. On the other hand, no significant association was detected with two other SH2 domain proteins, the SH2-containing protein tyrosine phosphatase 2 and phospholipase Cgamma. Insulin-like growth factor I acting through its receptor was as effective as insulin in eliciting tyrosine phosphorylation of IRS-4, but interleukin 4 and epidermal growth factor were ineffective.     

Normal concentration and excretion ratio of uranium in serum of normal individuals in India

The interaction between the antinociceptive effects of fentanyl and midazolam, administered intrathecally (i.t.), was examined in dogs. Midazolam 1 mg (i.t) depressed the A delta and C fibre mediated somatosympathetic reflexes to 68.3 and 85.2% of control values and then reduced the subsequent doses of fentanyl (i.t.) required to abolish these reflexes by 50%. After midazolam (1 mg, i.t.) the ED values for fentanyl were markedly less than the theoretical predicted additive values. This indicates synergism between the effects of fentanyl and midazolam.
