The autotransplantation of keratinocytes grown outside the body to treat extensive burns

The method of cultivation of keratinocytes from burned patients allows obtaining a new type of wound coverings having advantages over those used at present in clinical practice. The use of autologous cell elements results in a rapid and perfect taking of the transplanted layers. The method allows a more rapid (3-4 weeks after trauma) and more efficient (the plasty coefficient 1:100 and more) recovery of the skin as compared with traditional methods of treatment. Long-term results of such plasty were satisfactory.     

Induction of hepatocellular carcinomas in the Egyptian toad Bufo regularis by an antifungal drug (griseofulvin)

Neoplastic lesions (hepatocellular carcinomas) were induced in the liver in 18 of 100 experimental toads (Bufo regularis) force fed with the antifungal drug griseofulvin, at a dose level of 0.4 mg/50 g every day. Maximal time of exposure and observation was 12 weeks. The first tumors appeared in 2 male toads 4 weeks after the initiation of feeding.     

Physical maps of the six smallest chromosomes of Saccharomyces cerevisiae at a resolution of 2.6 kilobase pairs

Physical maps of the six smallest chromosomes of Saccharomyces cerevisiae are presented. In order of increasing size, they are chromosomes I, VI, III, IX, V and VIII, comprising 2.49 megabase pairs of DNA. The maps are based on the analysis of an overlapping set of lambda and cosmid clones. Overlaps between adjacent clones were recognized by shared restriction fragments produced by the combined action of EcoRI and HindIII. The average spacing between mapped cleavage sites is 2.6 kb. Five of the six chromosomes were mapped from end to end without discontinuities; a single internal gap remains in the map of chromosome IX. The reported maps span an estimated 97% of the DNA on the six chromosomes; nearly all the missing segments are telomeric. The maps are fully cross-correlated with the previously published SfiI/NotI map of the yeast genome by A. J. Link and M. V. Olson. They have also been cross-correlated with the yeast genetic map at 51 loci.     

The effect of socioeconomic status on the prevalence of biliary tract diseases in the Evens and Evenki

An epidemiological survey demonstrated that biliary disease detection in aborigines of the Far North is more frequent in subjects with nontraditional way of life. Chief biliary disease factors different in importance for Evens and Evenks are as follows: prior viral hepatitis, obesity, alcohol abuse. Incidence rate for different biliary diseases is not uniform in Far North native population. This may be explained by specificity of biliary functions.     

Monoclonal antibodies to the beta-chain of the LFA-1 molecule promote an increase in the cytotoxic index of effector lymphocytes and stimulate their proliferation

The influence of monoclonal antibodies (mAb) to LFA-1 molecule beta-chain on the functional activities of immune splenocyte fractions which were eluted from donor, third party and recipient macrophage monolayers was studied. The splenocyte fractions were treated with the mAb and tested for cytotoxicity and proliferation. MAb to LFA-1 molecule beta-chain (without co-stimulation by other antibodies) were found to stimulate the immune response of the splenocyte fractions in both functional tests. The observed effect might be non-specific. The relationship between the stimulation of proliferative and cytotoxic responses of the immune splenocyte fractions and the treatment with mAb of LFA-I molecule beta-chain remains obscure.
