Energy deposition pattern from tritium and different energy photons--a comparative study

In adult rodents, proliferating cells in the subventricular zone of lateral ventricle tangentially migrate into the olfactory bulb, where they become the interneurons. The present immunocytochemical analysis revealed that S100A6 (calcyclin), a specific calcium-binding protein of the S100 family, is restrictedly distributed in some astrocytes in the tangential migration pathway of the rat. These results suggest that a particular type of astrocytes containing S100A6 is associated with the tangential migration pathway.     

Changes in central hemodynamics and their correction during reconstructive surgery in Leriche's syndrome

Study of the parameters of central hemodynamics in the course of aortofemoral shunting for Leriche's syndrome revealed the role of lipid peroxidation dysfunction in the genesis of cardiovascular disorders developing in the immediate postoperative period. The postoperative period is characterized by expressed hypotension developing in the presence of activation of lipid peroxidation and suppression of plasma antioxidative activity. The authors recommend alpha-tocopherol, cytochrome C, and dalargin to prevent these hemodynamic disorders.     

A system of measuring surface relief and elasticity of the skin

An opticoelectronic system for measurement of a surface microprofile and elasticity of the skin in real time has been developed operating with a source of radiation having small time coherence. The frequency of measurement is 120 Hz, accuracy at least 3 microns. The system can be used for anthropological inspections, study of age and pathological changes in the skin.     

The epidemiological indices of multiple myeloma and concomitant nephropathies

The authors have conducted an epidemiological study for multiple myeloma morbidity and mortality among 80,000 patients of the Medical Center examined in 1988-1995. Myeloma was diagnosed in 65 cases. Standard incidence rate was 4.09, 3.18 and 3.5 per 100,000 for myeloma in males, females and both sexes, respectively. Standard mortality was 2.76 and 1.73 per 100,000 for males and females, respectively. The above rates do not differ much from those of other countries. In terminal myeloma renal insufficiency occurred in 39 of 41 cases. In 8 cases chronic pyelonephritis was an independent course of renal failure thus indicating the importance of its persistent treatment.     

The effect of latent carbohydrate metabolic disorders on the serum lipid spectrum in patients with ischemic heart disease and hypertension

Overall eighty four patients suffering from ischemic heart disease (IHD) and hypertensive disease (HD) were evaluated for levels of glycated hemoglobin (gly-Hb) in blood and effects of glycating on blood serum lipid spectrum. Elevated gly-Hb levels were recordable in 51.1% of the patients. Such patients showed significant augmentation of content of total lipids, triglycerides, total cholesterin, Burstein's test, rise in the coefficient of atherogenicity as compared to those subjects having normal gly-Hb level. Positive correlation was established between gly-Hb, levels of total lipids, triglycerides. Given in this paper are the following recommendations for IHD and HD patients presenting with increased gly-Hb level: restricted consumption of easily assimilable carbohydrates, diet N 9, no diabetogenic drugs.     

A conducting salt-based amperometric biosensor for measurement of extracellular lactate accumulation in ischemic myocardium

In this paper, fabrication, characterization, and physiological application of a miniaturized amperometric lactate biosensor are described. The sensor is based on cross-linked lactate oxidase and tetrathiafulvalene-tetracyano-quinodimethane (TTF-TCNQ) charge transfer complex. The sensor was developed for continuous quantitative measurement of the lactate accumulation in ischemic myocardium under severe depletion of oxygen. The sensor was evaluated in vitro at an applied potential of 0.15 V vs Ag/AgCl; it proved to combine all the performance characteristics desired for the present application, such as proper response in absence of oxygen, good operational stability, good accuracy and precision (103.5 +/- 1.2%), adequate response time (t95% = 80 s), and wide linear dynamic range up to 27 mM (r = 0.9998) in N2-saturated solutions and at 37 degrees C. The prepared sensors (n = 12) showed sensitivity of 380 +/- 90 nA/mM, and a background current of 240 +/- 50 nA. The lower limit of detection is 0.4 +/- 0.15 mM with a S/N ratio equal to 3. Results obtained for direct lactate monitoring in ischemic rabbit papillary muscle under no-flow conditions and PO2 < 6 mm Hg are presented.
